No but I have a friend there. Its the most polluted city in China... also the city in China where the most beautiful girls come from... uh every city in China is fun when you are single.

The pollution has been bad recently (basically since the start of 2013), and it occasionally ranks as high as Beijing, Wuhan, Chongqing, and other cities notorious for pollution. I've been tracking daily pollution figures and taking daily pictures of the sky in Chengdu for the last few months on my site: http://www.chengduliving.com/air so you can see what it looks like. Keep in mind that Chengdu is among the fastest growing cities in the world (Forbes) and construction is probably the greatest cause of pollution.

Also this rape thing is highly unusual. I don't think anyone in Chengdu really knows what to think of it, just a very random event. I know the place where it happened well.

Yeah, the women here are great. Learning the language helps, but it's not always necessary. I would say this rape incident is an anomaly but in general caucasians clean up here.

No doubt the rape incident is just one of those things, can happen anywhere.

I was seriously considering moving to Chengdu, but when I researched the pollution it actually put me off. Sadly I don't think it would be worth risking health to move somewhere like that long-term.

Muslim restaurants all have a picture menu, as do a number of upscale restaurants and western fast food joints. You can always just point to what someone else is having, too. Ordering food was a problem for me for about two days til I realized that. Lots of people working in fast food places speak English, too.

Back in late January/early February on CCTV they said the pollution here in Jinan was the equivalent of smoking 21 cigarettes a day. They cancelled outdoor sports, restricted driving to every other day and everyone and their mom was wearing one of those damn masks. I couldn't see the ground from my 5th floor apartment. It was like living in that Stephen King movie The Mist. It's cleared up since then, but it sucked when you couldn't step outside without getting covered in a light layer of shit and tasting the smog with every breath.

I'm also highly interested in Chengdu and I will certainly spend some time there when I return to China to see if it's a city I'd like to live. Btw, great site quantum! Love it! I'm going to spend a lot of time going through it!
How is the cost of living there? What would be the average budget needed to have a comfortable lifestyle, that is a nice, furnished apart in the best part of town, close to the action, eating out all the time and going out 3-5 times a night. As a comparison, something like that would require about 1500$/month in Guangzhou.

You can very live comfortably on about $1,200 a month I'd say. I just got back from a bar, was there for 3 hours and spent about $9. You wouldn't have to think about money at all, basically. Check the forum on my site for info, there is a wealth of information about Chengdu on there.
