As someone who has been living, traveling, working and visiting Japan on and off for over a decade, I've noticed many changes in Japanese women over the years, generally not for the better. I'm curious to hear the observations of others with experience in Japan.

1. Fashion - short skirts, fishnets and high heels used to be the rule. Now the guys are ultrafashionable while the women have become sloppy. I generally see girls wearing layers of baggy clothing. It is often difficult to even determine conclusively whether they are female or male.

2. Smartphones - Omnipresent. They are constantly hunched over them in the train, restaurants, etc. and now seem unable to even walk down the street without playing with one.

3. Flakiness - They used to be pretty reliable or even aggressive in setting up meetings, responding to emails and calls, etc. Now I'd say a majority of the time there are last minute changes, illnesses, random disappearances. I'm casting a wider net now than in my younger days and pursuing women I don't know as well so that may explain some of this.

4. Fatness - Not a big issue but more common than in the past.

5. Working life - Japanese women used to be different from American women in that they had a lot of outside interests and hobbies. Now it seems most focus more on their jobs and their interests consist of watching TV.

Good topic Lemmo as I'd be interested in hearing the feedback from others in here as well. Are you basing your observations mainly/only on Tokyo or other cities in J land? Or are you talking generally across the country?

I was in Tokyo 2 years ago and I have never so many hotties than that saturday night in Shibuya. I'm still dizzy thinking about it. lol And I've been around the block so to speak. I did see a lot of girls showing a lot of skin, wearing short skirts, if not mini skirts, fishnets, high boots and the likes. And this was in February where it was winter there. Wonder what it would be like when the weather is better, must be mind blowing I imagine...

Yeah, I'm in Tokyo and haven't ventured out much from it recently so I'm not sure what things are like in other cities now. The girls still get dolled up on Saturday night in the nightlife districts but when I was out here in the early and mid 2000s I was blown away by just the girls I'd see walking around on an average day. Now, I still see a lot of cute girls but they aren't as sexy or well presented.

The younger women (below 25 and especially below 22) don't seem to be of the same quality as the older ones, in terms of appearance, having some interests beyond smartphones and flakiness. I was putting this down to individuals maturing and improving themselves, but it could well be a generational decline in quality. Sadly, you could be right, Lemmo.

I should also have mentioned the increasing popularity of Facebook and attention whoring. Japanese women tend to be afraid of men and used to avoid having information about themselves made public (I think stalking/harassment is more of a problem here). This has changed over the last 2-3 years (I think since the movie Social Network came out). Before that, Japanese had avoided Facebook and I barely knew any who were on it. Now, almost everyone is on it, complete with hundreds of self-photos and beta orbiters.

i was in japan (tokyo and kyoto) in 2010, and i saw quite nice dressed woman, very smart.

Don't feel any decline.

Bingo. I have written about this in another Tokyo thread. Its a shame. Tokyo is still one of the best places in the world, but I am forced to compare it to the early-mid 2000's when it was at a peak. So therefore I have seen the decline.

I havent even bothered with women below 25 for quite some years. Even when I had access to hot young office ladies, the maturity level of Japanese women turned me off this age group. I stuck to the 27-33 year old group (+/- a few years) with regularity. They just dress better, understand life a little more, are better in bed and often have better bodies.

I met a Japanese girl at the cafe below my place a few weeks ago. She would have been super fly back in 2002. Now she was layered up, ugged out, no make up. Still shockingly beautiful though so I made some moves. She is 20. A virgin. Thinks "boys and girls are better as friends" and "she sees boys and girls as the same".

There is tragedy unfolding. I am just not sure how to put my finger on it.

Yeah, I suspect Tokyo will become increasingly like a Western shithole. I read that it wasn't until 1996 got its first Irish pub. Westernization wasn't so extreme in the early 2000s. They heyday is clearly over.

I've been actively chasing Japanese ESL students in Vancouver since 2006. I have had 3 of them as GF's, including the best one I ever had. Overall though, considering the time I put into it, it pretty much sucks . I actually volunteered at an ESL conversation school on and off for months that turned into years to meet some of them, since Vancouver is the ESL capital of the world. I did get a Japanese and Taiwanese GF out of it, but the vast majority of girls I met there were friendly and happy to exchange info and then won't even look at you when you see them again there. I spoke with other guys there who were there for the same reason I was and they said pretty much the same thing as me. They had a few girls from there every now and then, but considering how many they met, the level of success is very low. Most Japanese girls I met put on a fake air of being interested and happy to meet you, but then ignore you as soon as you hit them up for hanging out. A couple of them even complained to the ESL conversation school about me, saying they were offended that I like Japanese girls! I quit going after that until they called me and asked me to come back.
Given the Japanese guys herbivore problem in Japan, it seems most J-girls are not interested in meeting J-guys, let alone gaijin. When I wasn't volunteering at the school, I would post forum messages on websites for ESL students in town disguised as wanting language exchange, but really wanting sleepovers. It did work twice and I got 2 J-girl GF's out of the premise of language exchange, but considering how many messages I posted or responded to the success rate is very low. Some girls would ask me for my picture, which I sent them, but then they wouldn't respond. This is very strange since I used to me a model and I'm still a looker! I was a god when I went to The Philippines.
Overall Japanese girls are the most westernised of all Asians and it really shows. They are still better than the local girls however, so even though I quit going to the school yet again, I still hit them up on ESL forums and websites.

Good feedback guys! So it seems that Tokyo is going down the hole but how about the other cities in Japan? Is there anyone in here who's either currently in Japan or with experience with the other cities to chip in on this topic? Would be very interesting to hear their thoughts and feedback. When I return to Japan, I would want to explore other cities to be among less jaded and westernized girls. Any suggestions as to where would be a good option in Japan outside of Tokyo?

I doubt Japan could ever become a "western Shithole". They are just too far out there and do things their own way.

When I was there a bunch in the mid 2000's I met an American guy that had a biker bar in Osaka during the bubble years. That was the peak (as far as he was concerned) and indeed the stories he had were insane. But then we were pulling a huge amount of ass (in Tokyo and in Vancouver) so what did we care? This guy found his high water mark and anything after that was a decline. Its all relative I guess.

In the early 2000's we called Japanese ESL students "Yellow Cabs" meaning they would pick anyone up. Then came all the "rice eater" guys that only had the "game" to pick up Japanese women. When the Russians and Brazilians started coming to Vancouver, the girls were outright shaming the Japanese girls on the quality (or lack thereof) of the guys they were banging. Forward a few years and any guy that hits on them are "rice eaters" and "geeks" and "only like Asian girls".

A guy has to stay nimble and go with the flow. Be adaptable.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply it would ever be as far gone as the West. I just meant it is declining in the same ways but to a much less extreme extent. But the appeal of Japanese girls was always to a large extent based on their behavior rather than looks (they're cute but have no curves) so to anyone looking to meet girls, small changes in the culture are going to make it much less appealing (as opposed to if it was populated by tall busty long legged chicks).

I was lucky to first live out here back in 2000. The 1980s must have been really wild.

I think you'd have to stick to the largest cities just because of the old folk factor. Fukuoka is relatively young and uncontaminated by foreigners but I haven't spent a lot of time there since the mid-2000s so I can't provide recent info. It had a friendly laid back vibe then. Japanese always tell me people in Tokyo are frigid so I think you'd find a much different experience in other cities.

Its hard to beat Tokyo.

But if I had to rate places as far as women vs beauty vs logistics vs fun it would go like this:

Tokyo
Kobe/
Osaka/
Kyoto

Maybe Nagoya. Maybe Sapporo.

Never been to Fukuoka, but heard its nice.

But I have some good times all over the place in Japan, but outside the main cities it gets tough. For example I thought I was in a goldmine in Matsumoto where all the girls were staring at me doing the "Ehhhhhhhh" screech but when it came to conversation thats all they had.

Hillbilly Japan is annoying as fuck. But damn its beautiful.

And VC, Tokyo is not going down the toilet. Not sure what gave you that impression.

Also not sure where you got the "jaded and westernized" experience from. They are not jaded. And you want girls who are somewhat "westernized".

The problem right now (or as I saw it) is that Japan girls could give two shits about foreigners anymore. They stopped caring about the outside world, learning English, and are instead under the impression that "life is difficult".

But this would be hard to pick up on during a week long stay. Hell, even after a month long stay I would be having trouble seeing this if I hit the ground blind.

Thats why I like this forum. On the ground intel.

I haven't seen this at all. They don't care about foreigners but it is because they are so common and so many people have lived/worked/studied abroad. There is no longer any exotic appeal of white guys. But more than ever Japanese seem to want to live and work abroad on a long term or permanent basis. I was used to my social circle of foreigners turning over completely every 2-3 years. Now Japanese friends are leaving Japan almost as often (although my friends are usually the more intl English speaking Japanese).

What the hell.. i was in Tokyo for a couple days and thought the girls were some of the hottest I had ever seen in my life. I still feel like foreigners would be a big deal, considering I still see so very few of them walking the streets (like way, way, way less than Hong Kong). I would never venture outside of Tokyo due to their lack of English, but I still feel that (and heard from a swiss friend who was there for 6 months) that they are still wild.

So I responded, and asked where she was from because she didn't tell me if she was Japanese, Korean, etc. I think she was a friend of the first girl testing if she would get a response, which she did. So I messed up. I never heard back from her again either. I have also responded to many messages that they post on ESL sites looking for language exchange. I never got a response until this week when I responded to a J-girl wanting French and German language exchange. ESL students are a breed apart from regular Japanese. And if you aren't getting replies to your pics, most likely it is some gay dude.

Interesting.

Many of the girls I meet "cold" seem to be the "holiday to Guam, been to Paris once after college" type crowd.

The ones dressed down slightly are the "I love Hawaii" crowd.

Then further down on the frumpy dress scale are the "working holiday in Australia/ Canada/ England crowd.

I know of only two maybe three girls in Japan that I would call hot, well traveled and interesting. Not odd that they also have lots of family money, are LA connected and western educated (or private school Japan educated).

You guys realize that it is winter in Japan, right? This is why you are seeing girls dressed in layers. Plus, the layer dressing thing is a Japanese trend, but not for warmth. I'm talking about two bras and shorts under skirts with long socks. There's a name for it and its going strong.

Come May you'll start seeing the short skirts and fishnets again2. Don't think that its somethong cultural, its actually seasonal.

I live in japan. Obviously I'm not stepping off a plane for a few days in winter and being surprised people are wearing winter clothes. And 5-10 years ago, winter weather wouldn't have kept Japanese girls from wearing their miniskirts. Like you say, layering is a trend and it looks like shit - broomsticks in garbage bags.
