This sucks as I just lost a bunch of AA miles I'd forgotten about. This will split my US Airways off the rest of my Star Alliance account. Hadn't planned on SEA, but b/c of this, you might just see the infamous Ali-B in the Phils next month.

The new airline is likely an oneworld member and not a Star Alliance member. However, there is no need to hurry and to burn miles intermediately. I don't think it will become impossible to redeem US Airways miles on Star Alliance carriers in the next 6 months.

I may head back to the ME to look for work in the UAE. That will take some serious planning though. You can crash and burn quick over there financially.

But if you want to find good award seats (business/First) you need to start planning now since their rarity forces you to plan months ahead.

Absolutely, in my experience you will find the best award seats months ahead or within 2 weeks of departure.
