She is surely physically inferior (although not fat or ugly, just a bit plain), but assuming that she has good character and treats him well, who are we to complain? Mirka actually was a player on tour. She probably realized she couldn't make a living, and latched onto Fed. She was/is actually managing his career to a certain extent. He life became following him around. They need to find a babysitter so Mirka can work out for an hour or so every day. She was probably on the thick side even when she was in shape, but now after twins and eating in restaurants every day, she's packed on some pounds. I don't find her ugly, but as a former athlete, I'd like to see her in better shape.

Roger is my favorite player despite the fact that they always have to show shots of his fat wife applauding in the stands. He's got the smoothest forehand of all time and is the best dressed on the ATP.

Met him and got a picture with him in the Buenos Aires airport a few years back. I was the only one who recognized him.

I imagine he did not have the same difficulties with Argentinean girls as I did.

Met when 19. I'm assuming his training style is set up around a stable family life. Some athletes work best in this environment. If he divorces her, he'll get out of balance and his career is over. It's hard for us to imagine what's going on in his head. But I'm willing to bet that he derives larger satisfaction from tearing it up on the court than banging groupies. He's probably tried the latter, and found it not worth to risk his mental energy.

What he might do some years after he quits tennis is another thing.

Edit: I think his wife is cute, and surely wouldn't have been bad looking at 19 y/o. The Swiss are perhaps the West's most "boring/stable/family oriented" people, and a very unlikely place to foster a player. In fact, women couldn't vote there until the 1970ies, and full voting privileges not until 1990 or so.

This guy so squandered his immense talent, because his head was never straight. He was known for imploding on the court. He had one of the hugest gaps between Grand Slam titles in history I believe. His sister is the same way - just can't stay focused mentally, especially in big matches. I loved watching Marat play though...

When Roger was first getting started on the tour, he wasn't the cool customer we were accustomed to seeing when he was on his historic run. He was known for temper tantrums and racket-breaking. Maybe Mirka helped to chill him out. The flip of it is that for tennis players, marriage and kids can steal your edge. You no longer have that single-minded focus that it takes to stay on top - you're not practicing as much, or if you are you aren't going quite as hard because you're anxious to get back to your family. If they aren't traveling with you, you're missing them.

Which is why Roddick retired. Very true about Roger. When I first saw him play about 12 years ago in Miami when it used to be called the Lipton, he shattered two rackets. Same tournament Ivanisevic broke all his rackets and had to default because he had none left. Walked off the court.
