I think living in the glamorous parts of CA is almost the same as living in NYC (Manhattan particularly) in that if you don't have a solid game plan you're going to get fucked, assuming upward mobility is what you're aiming for. Otherwise, living in those places comes out to a loss on the balance sheet. For me, if it don't make dollars it don't make sense.

As for San Diego and Republicans, totally true that the term "Republican" is relative here. I also find many California republicans to be quite competent. I remember the former "Governator's" first recall election where he was up against Arianna Huffington, Cruz Bustamante and the republican Tom McClintock. McClintock was by far the most qualified of the bunch. Many of his policies made a whole lot of sense. In fact, in most traditionally Republican states he would be a moderate republican, if not a conservative democrat, but in CA he was considered far right wing. Unfortunate. Arnold could hardly be considered a true republican. I find most CA republicans to be more economically conservative rather than socially, which are the kind of republicans I can agree with for the most part. I don't really care about how people choose to live their lives so long as they don't undermine the liberty of others to do the same.

The interesting thing about SD is you have a situation where the city is more liberal and attracts a ton of young transplants but the county leans more Republican (though in a different sense). SD also attracts a lot of wealthy retirees. Guys like Mitt Romney live in La Jolla. You also have those rich folks in towns like Coronado who are conservative. I know I felt out of place like a mofo in Coronado.

Still, on a whole I find SD (the county included) to be fairly conservative for a major California city. It's like the second or third largest, no? I know it's LA then San Jose or San Diego. Those are in the top three. But on the other hand, SD is actually one of the few places in CA where I could raise a family.

Its too fucking expensive!!!

If you wanna live in a good area you gotta pay big bucks. I think this is the #1 reason.

If they are leaving California, are they going somewhere better?

I would like to live in New York, Miami, Chicago, Austin TX, Phoenix AZ, and other places around the world.

When I leave it will be because girls are easier in other places.

Tip: Small town Cali girls are way easier to deal with then big city Cali girls.

Besides the costs and taxes, the real problem in california is the mass immigration of mexicans(most of them are poor and uneducated). There is racism towards mexicans, and i'm pretty sure those anti-immigrant feelings would be non existant if those immigrants were actually german or swedish....

Tax the people who can afford it. If you make six digits, certainly seven, yeah, you can afford to pay for someone else. The concept behind it is simple and makes sense. Saying "you tax me and I'll not want to work" or whatnot is no different than the "omg if you make us pay healthcare I'll fire everyone!" routine...just blowing smoke. Our taxes go towards stupid shit. That does breed resentment. But there's still something fucked up when I was shit broke, living in the ghetto, making peanuts, and paying 25% and 5% state with 3% city without complaint (and barely eligible to even pay that), whereas someone making $150k/yr pays 35% plus 6.25% state, and bitches constantly (not referring to anyone in particular on this forum). The rich in the 1 mil class need more, but the 10+ mil group needs serious taxation. And we need to stop letting them offshore bank accounts too.

You don't want to pay that extra 3%? Oh well, cops don't give a fuck that your car got jacked, they're too understaffed to care. "No new taxes"? That mostly-white school your little timmy goes to is closing. You can't have social services and a functioning society, while not having taxes. See: any city that has no real tax base (like Baltimore). It's the same thing. The middle class shouldn't pay more than maybe 20% imo, the lower should get social benefits through more work-based stuff (jobs for the sake of jobs) and pay their fair share too. The rich have the capacity and stability to pay, therefore they should. The whining is nothing but white people problems.

Anon - do you know how taxes work ie FICA (payroll taxes) vs local taxes such as real estate tax, sales tax etc...It can be overwhelming. A very simple 10,000 foot overview: Your payroll taxes go to the Feds. They spend it on war, and so called entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare. They also dole out money to the states. A City like Baltimore gets revenue from property taxes and sales taxes. They will get get state funds from MD - again from your payroll taxes. My point is, raising income taxes will not benefit the groups you are talking about. It will all go to more federal waste. They do not spend our money properly. That is what I am opposed to.

It's not "white people problems"....it is US citizen problems. I agree with you 100% that we need to spend more on education / services to have a functioning first world society. Here is the complaint - the Federal Governement takes my, no, OUR hard earned money and just wastes it! So much of your paycheck is going to the war machine. More on topic. I spent about 5 years in California - the cost of living pushed me to South Florida. I never regretted that decision at all - however I did miss good tacos and surf breaks.

Despite people thinking I'm some hard-left guy on this forum, I'm a long-time fan of McClintock. I'd vote for him as governor in a heart beat. There are some thing I don't agree with him on, but the guy is competent as hell and knows his shit. In some ways he kinda reminds me of Ron Paul in that he really stands by what he believes and will do things like go on radio shows and answers tough questions that aren't pre-scripted. It was listening to him on talk radio that made me realize how well he understood this state's fiscal problems. While I don't want a right-wing president, I can vote right for local governments because this state is so far left it probably needs it just to balance things out. Shit like spending billions for some useless high speed rail that goes nowhere would only happen in California.

Both LA to SF and LA to LV are supposed to happen. The LA to LV one, passenger, is only a recent development.

There are hundreds of thousands of people if not millions that go back and forth between these cities each year. If it happens, (without knowing the hard numbers) I hardly imagine it will be a waste of money.
