RE: Are video games a loser habit?
Anything taken to extremes is a loser habit. Video games are bad because it's easy to blow massive amounts of time on them in a way you can't on other things. You'll get tired from working out, you'll run out of money at a bar, but you can keep playing Assassin's Creed 3 for 20 hours at a sitting if you want to.

Easy way to tell: make a to-do list of all the shit you want to do in a day. Include all the shit you wish you'd do, like working out or going to hit on chicks at a bar. Do this a couple days, and if you find yourself not getting shit done, while you're still playing a lot of video games, then you're spending too much time gaming. Otherwise, go have fun. Don't let anybody tell you what your hobbies should and shouldn't be. You're not answerable to anybody but yourself.

RE: Are video games a loser habit?
Listen to people who used to play videogames, and compare them to people with other former hobbies. With videogames, former gamers commonly regret spending all the time they had on it. The more into it they were, the more likely they are to regret their use of them, and the stronger their regret. Current gamers will write them off as haters and posers who never *really* liked videogames anyway. Hmm, sounds a lot like... drugs. And drug addicts.

With other, more productive hobbies of their past, people are likely to speak warmly of them. "I'm so glad I started learning Russian in the 8th grade." "I had an awesome time being on the wrestling team in Junior High." "I'm happy I read a lot of good books as a kid." "Traveling gave me some of my most cherished experiences." Sure, you'll find a few people who regret hobbies of this sort, but they are firmly in the minority.

I played some video games on my Commodore 64 new version. Those games were expensive and sucked. Glad I stopped playing video/arcade games when I got my driver's license. Sports and working out for the win.

I used to game a lot, but only for competition via multiplayer. Playing campaign or "beating a game" never interested me.
I do still regret the amount of time I spent eCompeting though. Could have had much better, social high school years.

I stopped playing video games and watching TV almost a couple years ago now. It has done nothing for my productivity though.

No, it can be done. However, it makes a massive difference whether we're talking "spends all day every day in front of the computer", or "plays a few hours a day after doing something productive". It really depends. What case are we discussing here?

I have a friend that I regularly play DotA with, I'd call him a gamer (in the video game sense), and the guy is spinning at least 3 girls at any given time and is quite Alpha. He is also very good looking and tall, but he works at it hard too (boxing, lifting, running).

I had a tennis coach who was an international player. Mentored me into what I am now, I'll never forget what he told me:
"pussy is the most addicting drug"
Let anything (here video games) consume you, even when you think you have it under control, and youll find yourself on a slippery slope hindering your development.

Except for game, basically yes. Video games or TV aren't the cause of wasted time, a lack of willpower is. That being said, I think when you are busy with important things and have a lot on your plate, the more efficiently you use your down time.

RE: Are video games a loser habit?
Like many here I was a hardcore gamer for most of my youth (from about 8-20), and yes, I do often lament and regret the time wasted, but what can I do about it?

I usually cop 1-2 marquee titles every year and play them, otherwise I play 'party games' with girls and my friends. Not a loser habit unless you let it become one, nothing wrong with playing for an hour or so to unwind when you get home from work, but if you're rocking sessions from your arrival until you go to bed, then yes, you need to scale it back.

RE: Are video games a loser habit?
Yes absolutely! Last night, I got paid to play Star Wars: Battlegrounds, then went home and surfed the roosh forums after I nailed my 23 y/o gf. After my GF got finished she wasted her time watching FOUR WEDDINGS on baidu and then played her QQfarm game. I wish I could post a picture of my gf but I'm scared of the backlash I might get for some of the things I write here... put it this way, I frequently get her to dress up as Chung-li. Does that make her a loser?

I spent my entire childhood playing video games when I could have been studying or doing some other boring activity? Really... man I have to work with children every now and then and the LAST thing they want to do is study or work hard. Video games are actually quite good for children and adults, they teach problem solving skills, goal setting, map creation, twitch hand eye coordination, sharpen your reflexes, multitask, plan ahead and help to counteract bad eyesight.

Asian kids spend the majority of their time studying, they are so stressed out at the end of their studies they usually binge on games for days at a time. Most remain virgins well into their 20s. They are the most boring people to talk to... they continue on this boring path as they grow older never knowing any different... you MUST develop your hobbies at a young age to feel any sort of drive to pursue more. You only want to spend more time on other things because you spent so much time on your hobbies as a child. My father spent his 20s gaming girls... the only hobby he has in his old age is laying on the couch watching CNN and getting drunk with my mom who has the exact same hobby. Both worked extremely hard in life, had jobs that paid 70k+ and the only way they can power down is to get wasted. I'm happy to say that I spent loads of time with super mario, playing through RPGs, fragging baddies in Half Life... it certainly made me a happier and more creative person. Whenever I need to relax, I just put on a game and a couple hours later I feel refreshed with new ideas and a shot of testosterone... seriously, who can play ALIENS vs PREDATOR 2 on the computer and not suffer the adrenaline shakes?

To put this into perspective:
My cousin told me "On our deathbeds, no one says: 'gee I wish I had worked more' ". She died of brain cancer a few months later at 35. She died with several hundred thousand in the bank, two cars and a house fully paid for. She spent her entire life working hard in the factory, getting promoted finally to manager and boom suddenly hit with that news.

The only wasted life is the one you don't live.

RE: Are video games a loser habit?
Do these guys look like winners? http://www.dota2.com/international/media/ They are, because they are really good at a particular computer game.

The achievements, levels, and status in games tricks player's minds in to thinking they have accomplished a lot when they have accomplished nothing. The more successful a game is, generally the better it is at tricking their players in to believing this.

I played plenty of computer games as a kid, some of that output was positive, a lot was negative. As an adult, there is no way I could be remarkable and continue to play games at the same level. While I would not have explicitly admitted it at the time, the reason I played so many games was because I did not have anything better to do. The whole thing was self-reinforcing. The more I played games, the more I didn't have something else to do.

If you play a few hours of games a week, cool. If you play a few hours of games a day, or more, it is going to have a major impact on your life. Either you will do something big and forfeit everything else or you will do nothing of value. You will not be able to run a successful company (get rich), meet and sleep with lots of hot girls, be well traveled, and play tons of video games. Additionally, instead of gathering life experience from all of the random things you could have done, you'll have lots of imaginary experience. In your teens and 20s this is easily disguised. Once you hit 30, as soon as you start talking people will realize you are a loser.

RE: Are video games a loser habit?
The only gaming system I ever spent anytime playing was the original Nintendo back in the late 80's. When the Super Nintendo came out my parents flat out refused to buy us a new one and when our old Nintendo finally broke that was it, no more games. I spent my childhood playing hockey, hunting and fishing.

I have nothing against gamers but can't for the life of me understand how some of those guys spend that much time glued to a game.

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

RE: Are video games a loser habit?
Games are basically a drug, which some people can manage better than others. While some can be very casual, others become full-blown addicts.

There's no question, though, that playing a lot of games is ultimately going to have a detrimental impact on your ability to accomplish other things in life. No one wants to hear this, because games are fun, but it's the truth. When you're playing games you're accomplishing things in a virtual space, but accomplishing nothing to enrich your real life.

Of the handful of legit naturals I've known in my life, none of them played games regularly if at all. In fact, I distinctly remember one of them telling me flat out something like, "Games are such a waste of time. Why would I sit there staring at a screen by myself when I could be hanging out with my buddies, talking to women or making money?"

"For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” - Romans 8:18

Long time ago, I used to play competitive games and after my team started winning all the local tournaments some groupies started showing up to our training house. I got to travel a lot, made a ton of friends and learned to work hard to win. It was fun but money/carrer wise there were many other better things I could have done

RE: Are video games a loser habit?
Most of the arguments against video games here are pretty bad. It's argued that games are a "waste of time" even though games are just for pleasure, like women (or almost anything else).

The logic being used against video games can be used against anything else that gives pleasure.

"Watching sports? Waste of time. Could be spent making money or chasing girls."

"Chasing girls? Waste of time. Could be spent making money, hanging out with my buddies, or building a relationship with a good woman to raise a family with."

"Reading books? Waste of time. Could be spent making money or chasing girls."

"Drugs and alcohol? Waste of time. Could be spent making money or chasing girls."

All of these arguments fail, because there is no qualitative difference between girls, drugs, money, games, sports, or any other any pleasure seeking activity. The pleasure derived from any activity is always relative to the individual, so to criticize one pleasure seeking activity and claim they should be doing another pleasure seeking activity instead is nonsense.

It's funny, because my video game habits have introduced me to some of my lifelong friends who have more money than anyone I know. One of them sends me computer parts, for free, worth hundreds of dollars. Another friend is a son of a billionaire. Wouldn't have met either of these guys in a bar or at a job, because these guys are literally so rich they claim that working jobs are for losers.

Remember, there are basically two types of people who play games hardcore. Losers (I don't talk to these people), and the people who are so successful they have tons of leisure time.

Anything can become a "loser" habit if it becomes so much apart of your life that you have lost all self control to it.

most gaming skills cant be applied in real life, or the ROI is pretty low. can you entertain a group of 10 NORMAL people with your World of Warcraft stories? could a guy playing guitar do this? (Assuming you practiced instead of hitting the servers)
casual gaming is ok for relaxing, like watching your favourite tv-show once a week. everything else is a waste of time
