The list is based on statistical data like the number of homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. I think any country without reliable data (like Somalia & Afghanistan) is dangerous as collecting statistical data is one of the tasks of a working government.

Johannesburg is the most dangerous city hands down....you are safe absolutely no where...upper class neighbourhood or lower class...it does not matter...even driving in the street you can get carjacked...in fact there are signs warning: ''hijack hotspot zone''.

In the wealthy, horse riding upper class neighbourhood I lived in we had: 1 neighbour shot dead, 1 abducted, raped and killed, another attacked and hospitalised - all within 300 yards of my front door...

How do I know? born and raised there!

You North American cities are PUSSY by comparison!

I'd say Juarez & Caracas are the worst of all those cities. One is a war zone (Juarez) and the other is fucked up beyond recognition (Caracas).

RE: 50 most dangerous cities in the world
This list mentions the murder-rate, not the death-rate. I think your chances of dying in India are higher than many of those cities. I'll never forget the guy I saw laying face down on the scorching hot black pavement, laying in blood, on a blistering 112F degree day, after falling off his 2 wheeler. Or the dead body floating down a major road in Mumbai during a monsoon flood. Or my relative who contracted Cholera while visiting me and spent two weeks in the hospital.

Amazing how safe NYC is compared to stories people have told me from even 15 years ago.

Labling cities as "most dangerous" and only listing homicides per-capita homicide is a bit misleading, otherwise, it would seem as though your assessment of Johannesburg would be closer to the truth. Including all violent crime statistics would provide a more accurate assessment of "dangerous" cities.

As it is, I guess you and your hometown will have to settle for 50th place while my North American city remains unranked...woe is me.

The list is far from accurate, Monrovia in Liberia or Lobamba in swaziland, would be at the top of the list by a long way. south america may not be safe but africa is like another planet, a very fucked up one.

Agree that this is heavily skewed depending on what part of the city you visit.

13 for me. I only felt unsafe in 2 or 3 of them. Hell, i walked around most of them alone and at nightime. Something i wouldnt do in some parts of philly or compton.

RE: 50 most dangerous cities in the world
Have been to 6, currently based in one listed.

Am surprised Medellin and Cali both feature strongly. Haven't been to either, but I thought that Colombia had mostly got a grip on things. Are most of the killings their "gang related"? i.e. You're only really at risk if you are some sort of local drug dealer, or is random violence also quit high?

Agree that the list is suspect. You can bank on the fact that no reliable data from sub-Saharan African countries, other than South Africa, was available to the compilers, for example.

Of course New York isn't on the list. It is probably one of the safest big cities in the world, let alone America. I am not in any remote way some sort of tough guy and I never felt threatened walking around anywhere in Manhattan, including up north. Maybe the South Bronx would be different. Looked pretty bad from the train.

I cant imagine any city in the US being more dangerous than e.g. Mexico DF (or any other major LA city). Just take a walk through Tepito...

1. Baltimore- Used to work for a company and had to go up there occasionally. Never felt unsafe.

2. Mosul- Yep, pretty dangerous. Used to go up there back in the hey day.

3. New Orleans- Used to work in LA, and made weekend trips over. Place has some rough areas.

4. San Salvador- Has gotten worse. Shame, cause if it was safer I'd be there now. Confused

Well that all I got on that list. Have been all over Iraq and Afghan though.

I´ve been to 8, but I strongly disagree with that list.

I was born and raised in Belo Horizonte and BH is not unsafe. Also, Goiânia is safe.

On the other hand, Panama City and San Pedro Sula are fucking scary.

-Enormous disparities in income.
-Racial tension.
-Inefficient policing and judicial system.
-Current constitution essentially designed by far left-wing Western intellectuals, and is comically inappropriate for local conditions where nothing but a very strong hand, including death penalty (which is obviously unconstitutional), will make any impact on crime and violence.

Not that it is the most terrible place in the world. Just that it could, and should, be much better. I always encourage people to visit. The scenery is spectacular, you've got all the incredible African wildlife in excellent reserves, and despite the real dangers 90+% of the people are cool and friendly. Also, Cape Town is a very cool city, that everyone should consider visiting at some point in their life.
