Time's cover this week shows Jamie Lynne Grumet, a slim blonde 26-year-old California mom, breastfeeding her soon to be 4-year-old son. Her father is a nutritionist and she herself was breast fed until age 6.

Seems to be part of the publicity around Mayim Bialik's new book promoting attachment parenting. Mayim's an odd duck: A child actress who became a neuroscientist who went back to being an actress again, who received a lot of net criticism when she blogged she's still breast feeding her 3 year old son. Now other late breastfeeders are also coming out into the media.

I get what youre saying, but I'm not really seeing her being celebrated as being a loving wife and mother. Wheres the father in the picture? This looks like more grrl power, just dressed up a little. Maybe I'm being a bit quick to judge, but thats just my first thought.

I was gonna post this and got distracted, and you beat me to it. I'm definitely interested in reading the magazine piece. The FIRST thing I thought was, is there a father in the picture? (much like Chad Daring touched on). I get the feeling that many of these women must be single moms, because I don't see how men would be okay with their kid still being on the tit when they're big enough for you to take them out and play ball with them, and have conversations with them. If they're out of diapers and are drinking out of cups, they shouldn't be nursing anymore. Those titties should have long been turned back over to dad. Junior needs to suck his thumb if he needs something in his mouth to provide comfort. This makes me think there isn't a man in the house. Maybe they seek this attachment to their sons because there isn't a man giving them love and accompanying dick.

I recall a story in the news a few years ago about a woman that breastfed even later than the woman in the Time story. The woman in the video breastfed her kids until age 5 and 8. There are tons of pieces on the internet about late breastfeeding...

I think we should avoid sexualizing the practice, but the cover is definitely over the top. That kid is going to grow up at some point, and this cover is NEVER going away. That's obviously why Time went there, but this mother should have used better judgment and protected her kid.

im sorry for the kids media whoring mom. idk, seems fine that she promotes prolonged breastfeeding, but putting herself and son on cover...... i read up about the whole topic, looks like america has a problem with tits, nipples thus breastfeeding (in public) in general. breastfeeding a 6yo is not common in western cultures. pumping your baby full of formula and artificial industry shit is worse.

Well she is not the norm. From having to deal with kids in my previous line of work I do know that modern formulas only have 20% of the daily nutrition a baby needs (compared to 90% when it first came out). Also that since mothers are older now and eat like crap their kids still get inadequate breast milk. It's a creepy thing but in the long run that kid will probably be a Olympian or a Ivy League Grad. He is getting full nutrition when most kids his age are eating Happy Meals and other shit. TIME is pushing the extremes here but I also have to read the story to see what angle they take.

Breast milk promotesz growth, limits allergies and behavior issues plus provides needed fats for the kids brain (look how big that kid is at only 4!).

The nutritional value of breast milk over formula or cow's milk can't be questioned. However, I don't know if that's the purpose behind this parenting method. I definitely would like to read the Time piece, and some of the other articles on the subject to try to get into the heads of mothers that choose this to see what the deeper motivations are.
