She suffered a concussion a few months back and had made one suicide attempt before. I'm not sure why her parents didn't pull the plug and bring her home after that.

Only speculating... but potentially her concussion might have led to CTE damage. Elite male athletes become very very gloomy while recuperating from

concussions... so I can only imagine how devastating it could be for female athletes. Combined with the fact that her life was cycling... just cycling... and you have a recipe for disaster right there!

Whilst it is undeniable that men commit suicide at far greater rates then women, and that people (men AND women) give far fewer shits about male suicides, to get angry and resentful about this both pointless and misguided.

Whilst every suicide is a tragedy, men's disproportionate numbers are simply a reflection of men's greater exceptionalism in EVERYTHING. There are far more male plutocrats, leaders, inventors, explorers, noble prize winners, artists, artisans, philosophers then woman. Just as there are far more male imbeciles, homeless, workplace deaths, criminals, victims of crime, desperately poor, and yes suicides, then women.

Reminds me of Canadian cyclist/speed skater Clara Hughes : in her autobiography (I read 'em so you don't have to, folks!) she talked about her relationship with her cycling coach which was some really fucked up daddy issues/Svengali arrangement where she felt he had ultimate power over everything she did, and it sent her into a spiral of depression. Anyhoo, she eventually snapped out of it, strapped on some speed skates and won a bunch of medals; she's now an official mental health spokesman.

Hughes managed to pull herself out of it and appears to be a strong character; not so much this Catlin chick. Do these coaches apply the same coaching techniques and methods to the females as to the males? Can they just not handle the pressure that guys absorb? Or is it a different approach to coaching altogether?

I don't see any expectation for a woman to be a Mary Sue. However, I see a lot of women being told they ARE Mary Sues. And when reality hits them like a ton of bricks, society is there to pick them back up and blame the patriarchy.
