I think yes. Recently I wrote an essay for my university course on the topic of Mexico (I nearly got a 100% score). Without having a Mexican girlfriend and her sharing her culture with me there would be no way I would have written such a good essay. That doesn't describe most of the tourists that I've encountered. Trying new food (especially stereotypical, unadventurous food such as pizza in Italy) and sight seeing for the sake of Instagram pics is more like it. Plenty of them opt to go on a sightseeing bus or tour so they can maximise the photo ops and minimise the interaction with the locals. Sure you're not going to learn much if you're just getting girls to come to your hotel room for sex as if you're ordering fast food, but if you're actually going on dates, going to places that other tourists would never find because they lack a local guide, and having conversations with local girls and their friends/family, you're undoubtedly going to learn more about the culture than the typical tourist.
