The Trump administration directed the construction of eight steel and concrete prototype walls that were built in Otay Mesa, California, just across the border from Tijuana, Mexico. Trump inspected the prototypes in March 2018. He has now settled on a steel slat, or steel bollard, design for the proposed border barrier additions. Steel bollard fencing has been used under previous administrations.

However, testing by DHS in late 2017 showed all eight prototypes, including the steel slats, were vulnerable to breaching, according to an internal February 2018 U.S. Customs and Border Protection report.

Photos of the breaches were not included in a redacted version of the CBP report, which was first obtained in a Freedom of Information Act Request by San Diego public broadcaster KPBS....

Responding to the picture from the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday morning, Trump claimed "that’s a wall designed by previous administrations."

While it is true that previous administrations used this design, the prototype was built during his administration.

"It's very, very hard — the wall that we are doing is very, very hard to penetrate," Trump said...

"While the design currently being constructed was informed by what we learned in the prototypes, it does not replicate those designs," said Waldman. "The steel bollard design is internally reinforced with materials that require time and multiple industrial tools to breach, thereby providing U.S. Border Patrol agents additional response time to affect a successful law enforcement resolution. In the event that one of the steel bollards becomes damaged, it is quick and cost-effective to repair.

So even the concrete prototypes were breach-able? Fascinating. Well, if these steel slats actually are effective then sure. I just don't want to see them being cut down when Trump isn't in charge anymore. Was really hoping we'd get a fancy two layer system like those middle eastern countries have but...oh well. Maybe someday we'll be as prosperous and fortunate as those nations.

Also, looks like the brother of Officer Ronil Singh next to Trump in that video. Very classy. That story still gets to me...

Doesn't matter much.

Opposition to the Trump wall is based on (((Religion))). Once the wall is up, the moral argument is beat. It will be much much easier to fix or upgrade the wall than to build the wall in the first place.

Republicans are right to say that federal programs, once started, never get ended and see ever increasing budgets over time.

Building a weak wall could totally backfire. If we build a wall and then within a month, the cartels use tools to break pieces of the wall open and cut through, cnn will be all over that 24/7 airing "proof that Trump's wall doesn't work and is easily breached"

Some people mention the USA is a nation of immigrants. But from the 1920s to the 1960s, we hardly had any immigration. We closed the door and allowed people to become absorbed into the culture.

Furthermore and more importantly, we did NOT have an extensive welfare state prior to the 1920s. No social security, medicaid/medicare, food stamps, or free housing. The immigrants who came here prior to the 1920's, came for the OPPORTUNITY. The immigrants today, especially the illegal types, come here for the WELFARE. It's a key difference that when pointed out, will shut down a lot of liberals. I've done it personally.

We need a wall but next on the agenda should be ending sanctuary cities and welfare benefits for any immigrants, legal or illegal. Then, deport ALL illegals (no exceptions) and impose stiff business ending fines for hiring illegal immigrants. No welfare and no work and they'll be shit out of luck. That should put a massive dent in the flow of people coming in and help with getting people out.

What's a the point of cutting through a wall if there is nothing good on the other side for you?

Trump could take billions from disaster areas to fund wall

Under the proposal, Trump could dip into money set aside to fund civil works projects all over the country including storm-damaged areas of Puerto Rico.

The plan could be implemented if Trump declares a national emergency in order to build the wall and would use more money and build more miles than the administration has requested from Congress. The president had requested $5.7 billion for a wall stretching 234 miles.

Under the proposal, the officials said, Trump could dip into the $2.4 billion allocated to projects in California, including flood prevention and protection projects along the Yuba River Basin and the Folsom Dam, as well as the $2.5 billion set aside for reconstruction projects in Puerto Rico, which is still recovering from Hurricane Maria.

There are many Mexicans that look 'whiter' than your average white American due to unmixed Castilian blood. The Mesoamerican/indigenous Mexicans are the short, dumpy ones or these with exaggerated facial features like the Three Amigos pictured here. The wall was breached by industrial tools and military personnel who took their time. If you think some group of illegals are going to cut into a steel+concrete wall you must be smoking something.

You'll need the gear transported over distance and you'll need enough time and energy to get through multiple posts. Now thats pretty easy if you had all the time in the world and nobody was watching but there will be people watching.

You can also replace damaged posts better than a full concerte wall.

Can we keep Kushner away from these negotiations. Reading he is trying to work a DACA for wall arrangement. That would be a disaster, when you add in the related chain migration it could result in 3+ million people coming in and only a portion of the wall. I've cited the Hungary example a while back. You build the wall 100 feet inside your own border and catch anyone who walks up to it. Then you release them on the South side of the wall and tell them to wait there for a year while you process their asylum application. Then you deny their asylum app.
