I don't watch really any shows or movies nowadays, but this one caught my eye because it directly relates to social media, fame and validation seeking, and the shallowness of our culture. It's actually well done for a Netflix show, as some of these have been a little too obviously biased in the past for my tastes.

I would highly recommend it to this board, as I think it confirms a lot of what we know about celebrities, fame, and the hedonic treadmill.

The documentary features people like Paris Hilton (she is absolutely dead inside, you can see it in her eyes), TheFatJewish (who seems to be just loving life with a DGAF attitude, and knows it'll all come to an end one day, he seems to just be cashing in), Kirillwashere/slutwhisperer (Guy has partied way too hard and his body is shutting down, but is a fairly introspective person), and a bunch of other people that I didn't know existed but apparently have like 2million followers.

Some observations about the doc:

1. Fame is not the answer, even though it seems to be what 90% of our society is focused on. We already knew this in this community, and have watched famous musicians, celebrities, and personalities commit suicide or completely fall off the rocker because they realize that their existence is meaningless and they don't really matter to anyone. It's pretty sad to watch, and there will be a constant stream of people (both men and women) that want to go chase fame.

I personally don't get the desire for fame; I wouldn't want my life ran through a fine-tooth comb. But, for young girls and even increasingly for young men, fame is the end-all-be-all and celebrities are worshipped like the gods that we have long forgotten about.

2. Once you get into this world, your brain is rewired to follow short term gains, dopamine hits, and it's very hard to pull out of if you go down the rabbit hole like some of these people have. There's a girl on the show that takes close to 1000 photos, picks the absolute perfect one, posts it, and then proceeds to sit and refresh her feed like a crack addict looking for a hit. It's clearly and undeniably addictive.

3. Some of these people get paid ridiculous amounts of money for ONE PHOTO. I'm talking in the neighborhood of 5-6 figures for a picture. Advertising seems to be shifting to social media at breakneck speed due to easily understood metrics, engagement, and people actually wanting to be there. Use this for your own business endeavors.

4. Social media is designed to steal our time. Attention is the new currency, because once you have attention and awareness, you can parlay it into sales, influence, and creating an empire. Companies don't care about you, just that they hold your attention and you are top of mind.

5. Depression is absolutely rampant with these people, it's pretty much as common as a drug addiction or alcohol use in celebrities. I predict that suicide rates are going to continue to climb as people continue to see their lives as failures because on social media, everyone owns a lambo and makes millions of dollars. Instead of comparing ourselves to who we were yesterday, we are busy comparing ourselves to the pinnacle of achievement in the world.

6. The internet is becoming more and more synonymous with reality. There are points made about fake news (literally creating fake news as a joke and having gullible people buy into it), how people see things online and are emotionally swayed, and how influencers become the world of many of their followers.

Overall, I think that social media isn't a good thing for mankind. You have kids that are spending more than a day a week on their smartphone and behind a screen, and this cannot help social development, the ability to connect with real people, or learning about delayed gratification, focus, and hard work to reach goals.

However, if you can be the dealer and not the consumer, there is absolute potential for massive paydays, building widespread companies, and creating cool things that can help others and reach millions of people. If there are millions of people that want to be on these platforms, you know where they eyeballs are, and you know where the money can be made. It's up to you how you decide to use or not use these tools - and they should be tools to be used, not something that uses you. I think that you can use these platforms to make money and share your life without getting sucked in IF you have discipline and understand what's going on. But, I also see why many would opt completely out of it, as I have chosen to do in the past.

Has anyone else seen this documentary? What were your thoughts?

Personally, I was a little bit disappointed by the documentary. Idk what exactly I expected but there was something missing in my opinion.

I was surprised when I learned that Paris Hilton had such a huge influence on this social media hype but then again I'm not from the US. Overall, I agree with you:
Too much of this stuff is not good for any human being and we'll see more and more problems in society soon.
But I don't really think the successful social media whores are the ones necessarily depressed in the end because like you said they make tons of (easy) money and idk if it is really a rush of adrenaline from the likes or the rush of adrenaline from the $$$.
I mean this one vine bitch was apparently depressed because of her shitty childhood or whatever and Paris Hilton ... I really don't want to be her. I mean growing up with rich parents sounds so great but I think it's not always easy. Then she made some shitty life choices and probably that killed her more than social media. The depression will come for those who admire these influencers but are far from becoming one of their own. Kids that only have their phone and no friends. And once their idols will happily retire with millions in the bank those kids might just lose it ...

On a side note, I knew Kirillwashere/slutwhisperer from Instagram and I was surprised how "intelligent" he seemed in reality.
Looks like he's taking your advice seriously... Trying to make money as long as he can. Also doesn't strike me as the typical social media addict but he's rather using instagram to promote his stuff and parties (similar to the fat jewish guy).

I think your point hits the nail on the head in which not everybody can be their idols, and this is causing a spike in depression as of recently. I know kids that don't have a dollar to their name that will flex with a rented lambo on instagram, just to make it look like they are a success in life (society's standard of 'success' nowadays). What does that do for the everyman that sees this shit? Social media is curated content to make it seem like you don't shit, sleep, or do any mundane things in life. I think that's the poison, when you start comparing everyone else's 'best' to your worst.

I was blown away by his introspection, when you think that most on social media are just idiots that stumbled into fame. However, the women seem like lost puppies and are falling for the trap head first.

Been laying off the social media lately, but still get in a lot of screen time on this forum and other manosphere sites, also going down the rabbit hole if something catches my attention. Last night I watched a video about a guy way into body modding and next thing I know I’m looking through all the ways to can add a piercing to a vagina. The more you know...

I used to follow Kirill on IG. He seems like your typical smart Jew who is profiting heavily from peddling dengeneracy. Not hating on him, he literally gets paid to travel and grab hot tits. Pretty fucking smart if you ask me.

I agree with the points made. I unfollowed Dan Bilzerian way back when bc I need to be grinding on my own shit instead of seeing this dude living the dream life and getting bummed that it’s not me. Social media is definitely a mind trap but the potential for profits could and should be utilized by woke and industrious fellows such as those who inhabit this forum

Of course she does. But the notion that she earned it or created anything of substance is utterly ridiculous. I also hated how this documentary tried to make the audience feel bad for these mega-do-nothing e-celebs. How dumb do they think we are?

I almost do feel bad for these people. I think that there's an air of purposelessness around their existence that makes them feel as if they are nobodies, even with millions of followers. It seems to me that the measure of a man is not by how much money he accumulates, but by his purpose in this world and his value to others - and it's apparently clear that these people have realized that what they are to millions of people is bullshit. They're a disposable dopamine hit, which it seems our culture is focused completely on nowadays.

Just watched this last night. I never knew Paris Hilton was that influential/still relevant. She looked like a nice girl before the joos and Hollywood took her mind over.
