This is a good blanket rule for most people especially the beginners. However:

1 - when you learn to recognize quality you can find yourself great deals from unexpected quarters.

2 - depending on the goal and use you have for specific item, sometimes you really don't need quality

One of my best pairs of boots is one that costs 20e from H&M on sale. This is coming from a guy who considers boots sacred. Paris is dirty and rains a lot so for everyday wearing nice boots are possible, so I wanted something that wouldn't give me rage if it stains. Looks like the one below.

Decent style, cheap leather though its still leather, and plastic sole so it's easy on your feet. I expected it to last 6 months at best. It eventually survives 2 years of harsh abuse (I wear them when I know its gonna get dirty) before the sole got torn off. For the price of a dinner.



Then there's my favorite black and gold pimp blazer I wear out clubbing. Shit cost 70e, cheap for a blazer. Best ROI so far, outclassing all my expensive blazer. Shit got a velvet texture and bitches LOVE touching it. The synthetic fabric surprisingly is wrinkle resistant too. Lasted a year and a half now, still show no sign of wear.

Agree that you can't cheap out on leather though. Unless you go to Italy. They make fuck awesome leather jackets there for very decent price. My Golden Goose is Italian full grain leather, stylish yet thick as fuck. The cuffs are hardened with gold rivets, again stylish but could stop a knife. I tested.

My old roommate is half Italian and had a similar one. The left side is tailored specifically so you could fit a conceal carry holser inside! All for 300-400e with the holser option.

It turns out that the Mafia there needs to both look like they mean business and have clothing made for self defense. This has some impact on certain clothes. Long live the patriarchy!

Yeah my favorite pair of shoes are one of the cheapest I own. Think I picked them up at a TJMaxx for like $60. Cheap leather, plastic sole, but I wax them all the time and keep them up and have put a LOT of miles on them over the course of 3 years. They have a little patina and character to em now even. I've gotten a lot of compliments on them over the years:

The non-iron shirts look and feel unnatural. They are not breathable and feel plasticky slick. I recommend regular cloth, preferably hi quality or even sea island. The non-iron is really a chemical coating.

You don't need to even iron regular shirts, just hang them up to dry in the shower after washing. I stopped ironing, never noticed a difference. I actually gave all my non-irons to charity, they suck and the wrinkle-free look is unnatural.

Don't need to iron regular shirts? Not sure about that. My high quality cotton dress shirts look like shit unless I send them to the cleaners (which wears them out too quickly) or spend considerable time ironing them. Even then, the problem is that by the end of the day they still look like shit. When was the last time you saw Bond in a wrinkly ass shirt. I can't stand having wrinkly sleeves.

I agree on the Brooks Brothers non-irons. Milano fit. From the real store, not the outlets. No brainer. Look crisp 12 hours later. Fuck ironing cloths, I did enough of that in the Navy.

I do own a Jiffy steamer. Highly recommend that to anyone who despises ironing. Great investment.

I stand by my Brooks Brother non-iron recommendation. It’s 100% cotton and feels great. I have a few bespoke Turnbull & Asser (supposedly the best) which cost me three times as much and the quality is not noticeably better to me.

The quality isn't noticable to you, but I have noticed it. Next time try one of the Brooks "Golden Fleece" shirts, which is the quality equivalent to Turnbull (though the Brooks cut is super-fatboy), and the difference between that fabric and the regular Brooks is like "night and day". Frankly the cheap stuff is like non-organic produce, only tolerable if you haven't had the real stuff.

The non-iron's uniformly feel bad and look polyester, I can see when a guy wearing a suit has them on, the lack of natural fabric and even coloring of it are off and comes across as try hard, a lazy blot on the impression of the entire style.

I can't condemn wanting to save time and keeping it cheaper, if you don't want to put your money into the shirt part of the suit, but it pains me to see that shiny slick non-Iron brooks stuff.

Kamakura makes great made in japan dress shirts in slim and regular fits, but there aren't many brick and mortar stores in the US. If you are ever in NYC or NJ, check them out.

Kamakura is very nice, I own a couple. They have two cuts, Tokyo for Asians and New York for Whites (bascally longer sleeves). They also have very nice woven wool ties. I like their shop on Madison avenue, very Japanese. Last time they gave me a complimentary hoodie with pants from their casual line (West End Rule) - can’t figure out why.

What type of jacket would anyone recommend for someone living in an area with a good amount of rain and moderate climate. I'm looking for something not too heavy that I can wear indoors. Was thinking of something like a leather jacket or a peacoat.

A trench coat is the go-to choice made specificially for this situation. If you have the money to spare do go Burberry. One of those rare instances where brand names do make good stuffs.

Waxed cotton jacket. LIke a barbour or belstaff. Wouldn't want to wear a trench indoors. Leather isn't really waterproof.

No surprise you don't wear this maladroit melange yourself. Cheap and inauthentic buttons (half the point of a peacoat) with a cheap and unmatching fake-chesterfield collar. And nothing gets that much of a discount unless it "fell" off the back of a truck, the retail price you quote is probably fake and the "discount" permanent.

I am not used to this style of boots, so I am getting used to wear them, but I think they are killing it.
