Modern Rock
I've always liked rock music and was curious what happened after 1990s. Most of the music I wasn't wild about but there seems to be a retro revival happening. A group called Greta van Fleet released there debut album a few days ago and its the top of the amazon albums. Number 2 on I tunes albums. A few of there songs did well on billboard last year. Not sure how long that takes for it to update. First video hit 27 million views. They sound like Zeppelin.

This group sounds like Paul McCartney and Bowie musically. The one guy was the boy from Sinster movie. Not the greatest singers but they are great with harmonies

Last group reminds me of Stones and Queen. Catchy. I'm curious on how he gets his voice to sound like that in the chorus.

The first group has the potential of bringing rock mainstream, but it may stay indie.

RE: Modern Rock
There’s still good rock that’s mainstream and modern. The Kings of Leon and The Black Keys rock.

Here's some stuff I like:

Honestly most of the "alt revival" happening now is a pale imitation. Fuck, imagine dragons is considered rock. So is 21 pilots for fucks sake.

Japan is having a surge in girl band rock music. Don't laugh at me until you watch it... They're damn good.

Joe Satriani is in my opinion, the greatest rock musician of all time. The man can tell a story with his guitar and without saying a word. He's still producing great work. He seems like the type of guy that would fit in on RVF too.

Gave a listen to the examples and they sound stale and imitative.

They suffer from the general cultural collapse: sterility, soullessness, regardless of medium or genre. Even old bands who used to be good suffer from the same.

And I doubt there will be a revival in rock music for the simple fact that hip hop is much easier to make and get into. You don't even need to pretend to play instruments or sing, it's openly no-talent required.

Well, you need something to say. I have to admit that I'm getting sucked into the Greta Van Fleet vortex and in their defense they have a sincere pretentiousness to their hippie revival ethos that is sort of brave (and unintentionally silly, but I salute them). But most of the retro acts seem to want to lean on camp (before The Struts there was The Darkness). In other words, Spinal Tap with better musicianship. And that's amusing, but it's sort of the musical equivalent of junk food.

Satriani is a great guitarist but most of his solo material is forgettable. 'Surfing With the Alien' was his watershed album and most significant musical contribution. He's also guilty of some real guitar wank (similar to his protege Steve Vai-- only album you need to hear is 'Passion and Warfare').

Much of this is subjective, but the best modern shred/virtuso guitarist who blends true musicality, melody and song writing is Guthrie Govan. The guy is a beast.

Speaking of: BABYMETAL are an insane hybrid of JPOP and modern metal (very much American Prog/Power/Death Metal).

BABYMETAL is cute and they put on fun high energy shows... But they're nothing special.

Fair statement. There are few things in life I enjoy more than kicking back with a cocktail and listening to Satriani. But the next day i have some bullshit pop song stuck in my head.

RE: Modern Rock
I heard this on the radio. Not exactly rock, maybe metal? But the song is very topical since its anti SJW. There is plenty of material to work with for songs, but it might limit the audience. So more indie stuff which can be great too. More creative.

Thought this was sweet. Old school rock. 3 guitars! I think most of the band is from Black Crowe from the 90s.

Will have to check out all of the videos, posted. Keep them coming! Black Keys hasn't produced anything for 4 years.
