I don’t drive into Boston daily anymore, but anything bigger than a Tacoma would be annoying to park on the street there. Subarus and the Wrangler would be fine.

I did the front brakes and belts before heading out. So far, that's all I have done as far as mechanical work.

I built a roof rack and a sliding shelf system for the back so we have quick access to gear.

I would love to lift it a couple inches and build an exo frame roof rack up top for a tent and gear. This body style is pretty good and I use the reference of the Canadian Forest Fire Fighters Suburban to get some ideas. A buddy of mine has a plastic cummins engine model so we could probably put a diesel in fairly easy. Since its only a 1500 I would be a bit skeptical on the front end being able to hold it, and I am pretty happy with the 5.3 so I doubt it would happen.

Glad you posted an update Laner. I've been looking hard at picking up one of these. I don't really commute and most of my driving is to areas for hunting and I get sick of hauling shit in my car.

Purchased a BMW i8 a couple months ago. It’s pretty bad ass and it turns a lot of heads. It’s also great on gas and pretty quick. Would definitely recommend.

If your heart is set on those two, I would recommend the Wrangler--it is far manlier than the "gay-friendly" Subaru. Would be far easier to pick up chicks with it.

I did consider the Outback when I was car shopping, but ultimately went with the 4Runner TRD. I love it.

My daily driver is a 1987 Mercedes 300SDL. Yeah, it's beta. It's also paid for and really reliable. None of those fucking computers. It will still run fine after an EMP/CME (except for the radio).

I would recommend one any day, especially if you are not commuting in it. Even though its super comfortable with lots of nice features, the transmission and heavy body don't seem to appreciate the stop and go traffic. Especially the front end/brakes, they seem to hate the aggressive stopping that is sometimes required.

But for throwing A LOT of gear into, the family, and setting off down the back roads and up into the rugged mountains its a great machine. Its a big truck, so that seems to turn a lot of the hardcore 4x4 guys off, but for a guy with a family who wants to go camping off the beaten track in some beautiful back country lake, its ideal.

Do you guys think at all about the yearly cost of gas per year?

For instance, depending on your daily miles driven, going from 30mpg to 16mpg could easily cost you an extra $1000+ per year.

No. It's a cash flow thing. Unless you're paying the whole yearly amount up front then it doesn't affect your day to day life. If it is affecting your day to day then there are cash flow problems that need addressing or you need a more efficient car, or bike.

Also maybe you can incorporate your ride into your business for tax purposes. Do you need to transport tools/equipment/people or can you use it as a sales or marketing tool?

No. I can easily afford the extra gas- it’s just surprising when you do the math how much it can add up to.

I’m still thinking Jeep or Subaru because of the snowy winters here. Funnily enough, I test drove a used black Jeep that was heavily perfumed inside. Obviously owned by a woman. And, after some internet searching, it also turns out the Wrangler is one of the top ten cars for homosexual men.

As much as I like my little Highlander, I think I've grown bored of it; it's essentially a lifted Camry-frame. It's FWD, first year model (so the kinks weren't fixed until 2 yrs later), at times I need more room, and I plan on doing more out-doorsy stuff like driving through Colorado and hitting up random festivals...and well, honestly I just fucking want one.

And I need to replace the radiator, struts, bearings, belts, compressor, tires, etc etc. Little thing is at 200K miles, I plan on keeping it but it doesn't provide me with the thrill a real SUV would.

I drove 2 GMT900's to see why they were so cheap compared. They were nice machines with lots of comfort, but they felt a little 'city' for me. The GMT800's were a great balance of both worlds and there were some good prices. I saw LOTS of these models with 300k miles, which is good. The Suburban/Yukon XL is the second most common vehicle on the road with 200k + miles. They are good vehicles.

The real winner here for me though is the 2015 and up models. These are one of the nicest trucks on the market I think. Almost too nice for Canada's back roads, really. As I mentioned, the suburban was designed to perfectly slide full sheets of wood and metal into. They are utility first for me, luxury second.

Thanks brahsef! I'm going to get a 15> 2500, if not then I'll go for the 1500 since I don't need to tow. I just happen to have a "thing" for the federale/pop/deep-state look the 2500 has. Every time I see one, I pull up next to it to see who is driving it out of curiosity.

Also, where the heck "north" do you go that requires long trips? I mean...you really can't get any more north than Canada

Hol E Fuck. Just discovered this little gem that looks pristine despite being run the fuck out of.....2015 2500 with 213K miles. Probably used by the deep state using their limo service cover. Black on black and leather too. The only bummer is the second row bucket seats...but you can't have everything. Normally I shy away from cars with 60K miles but at this point, every piece of equipment that needs to be replaced has already been replaced and anything that was going to shit the floor....has already shat the floor. Then again, it's a first year car but oh well.

You could probably even cruise through Mexico with no issues, everyone would probably steer clear of you.

Here in west of Canada, its the size. A buddy picked one up recently, following the advice of our other friend who swears by them. They can pick their way through a lot of tighter trees that overrun the double track forest service roads. These guys also live in Vancouver, a big city with millions of people and traffic to match. So a smaller truck is easier to navigate the tight streets, parking and drivers.

Its getting a lot of love here for the diesel as well. We never got the Hilux, so I think there was a massive hole for these here.

Thought I'd share because its somewhat relevant, I recently drove down the Las Vegas Strip in my dad's 1969 Chevelle convertible that he paid $30k for. We were getting cat called by the ladies, hollers from the fellas and honks from other drivers. It was insane, because I could see and feel everyone looking at the ride in awe. It's loud and incredibly beautiful. A $200k ferrari wouldnt have even been noticed. Best social investment you will ever make.

Hahah I looked into the Duraburbs/Duromax but holy fuck they're expensive.

Sadly Luke Bryan's suburban won't make it pass the border, cartel goons love hijacking trucks. Couple of folks I know have had their suburbans, 2500, murdered out F250, Navigator, Armada, and Expedition jacked in the middle of the highway in the Monterrey-Nuevo Lareado, Monterrey - Reynosa, and Monterrey-San Luis Potosi highways. They just pull you over, take your truck and leave your ass in the middle of the highway stuck with a loan that the insurance company won't cover.

Colorados are nimble as fuck. They can cross more terrain and smaller trails because they do not stick out like a regular truck (F150, silverado, etc). Imagine you're in the rockies or middle of the woods but want to make a turn, a big truck would make it difficult but a pick up or FJ cruiser would be able to do it because of it's tiny.
