Ada Initiative and "COVENANT CODE OF CONDUCT" is going to get lot of attention right now and set up need for major fork of Linux in the near future. Linus's contrite apology was bizarre.

It was like he was being passive-aggressive, or sarcastic, or just taking the piss. Or being blackmailed. Or just admitting defeat. There's a real chance he won't be back.

Linus is Linux. He's a hot-head. But he's a genius coder hot-head. And he loves his baby enough to throw his toys out of the pram regularly when it comes to the kernel development. It's not ideal. But it 'is what it is'.

Linux may not have taken over the desktop yet. It probably never will, but it serves much of the world's infrastructure with regard to both general and specialist computing. Mobile, server, and even a bit of desktop these days for a few bods that don't mind getting down and dirty. It's a big deal.

This is a storm that's been brewing for a while. But I did nazi this one coming. It really is bizarre.

It's all very well faffing around with the latest desktop or whatever when you are running something like Linux Mint or one of the other top 20 distros and your chosen Window Manager - KDE, LXDE, XFCE, Gnome, Cinnamon, Mate - but if the kernel is melting your CPU, well, that is when the real fun will start. Linux and the chosen desktop you use is always hit and miss, no guarantee it will work - just suck it and see - but this just adds a whole new level of FUD to proceedings.

Some of those SJW's are good coders though. They thrive on it. It's their whole identity in their sperg minds. But there is no one that can replace the King. Linus IS Linux. He's the Kernel Master. Linux IS the Kernel. All that GUI shit on top is just icing on the cake.

Don't forget they killed the guy that made one of the most successful distros of Linux ever: Debian. Well shady. I really do think the cops bumped Ian off. Another bizarre event. Look it up. It's not pretty.

Maybe Linus got a horse's head on his bed.

But never mind Linux on the desktop and the few nerds and geeks that mess about with it. Serious work is done with this OS. It runs the entire (pretty much) infrastructure of the planet's computing (when you take it all in aggregate: server/mobile).

There's a lot that can go wrong with such a cutting edge technology. Linus was not the enemy. The fact he's had his card marked for 'bad behavior' is almost unbelievable.

But they are coming for us all now. We can all expect a knock on the door at 5am.

I took the whole context of Linus's public message to be one of those sorts of messages you get when a fighter pilot is shot down over Iraq: They are battered and bruised, they are obviously broken, but they are apologizing for what they did, telling you that they are fine, if only...

Either Linus has been totally fucked off behind the scenes and shown the video of what happened to Ian from Debian, or he's just lost the will to live and thought "you know what, fuck it, I'll apologize, I'll fuck off somewhere and let them all sort out that shit themselves. Good luck finding my little easter eggs suckers".

By this point, I just can't see him coming back and saying "Ok, where were we? Buffer Overflows? Oh, YOU!".

But I hope I'm wrong.

If he's been forced out, and this really is it, then the powers that be must have some kind of evil genius coder in place to replace him if they think they have a cat in hell's chance of even trying to maintain that code base, let alone improve on it or insert any back doors.

Dude I HATE Tor 8, I made a thread with no responses but ALL the security/privacy features were off by default when I used it, scripts kept turning back on when I disabled, etc.

This is the most obvious case of blackmail I've ever seen. Linus was clearly compromised or threatened in some fashion, and the threat was severe enough to make him do a complete 180 in his personality and walk away from his life's work. We can speculate as to the questions of "who" and "why now", but there is simply no other rational explanation for Linus's departure besides blackmail. This would literally be like Roosh suddenly declaring himself a radical feminist and turning over control of the forum to the SPLC. It goes completely against the man's character and displays an attitude of total disregard for the enormously successful work that literally bears his name! Can any reasonable person honestly look at this and think anything besides the fact that Linus was blackmailed into walking away? I would honestly be interested in hearing any other plausible theory, because I'm drawing a complete blank.

On the plus side, this will end up red-pilling an awful lot of high IQ/tech-minded white guys who previously leaned left or were apolitical. Nothing will wake you up to the insanity of the modern left like some freakshow tranny SJW trying to gleefully burn your house down out of pure spite and hatred.

Whoever told you the latest update is fixed is fucking lying, it still runs scripts. I'm not using Tor at all I'll wait til the next thing comes. Brave is solid for my purposes ATM (I don't need super massive anonymity in the US still, hopefully we keep the 1st ammendment etc)

I've been following this whole story with some interest. But, what about some of the other, usually verbal, tech gurus and nerds? Their silence on this is deafening. Unless, I am missing something, several big names haven't said a word on this.

Has anyone picked up anything by mathematical genius, political enemy of men, and noted crazy man Richard Stallman? He's the GNUru. He has a massive and ongoing fight with Linus.

I was even expecting to hear from another genius and noted crazy man (albeit much more tolerable to me) - Jaron Lanier.

So far, the only people I see commenting on this are various tech blogs and script kiddie hacker groups. The whole situation is simply bizarre.

So, any idea on alternatives? If for nothing else, then simply as a back up plan. BSD? Darwin? illumos? The problem is so many of these projects get opened and then die a few years later. At least Ubuntu and Fedora have had some staying power.

Right now, I am consoling myself with the knowledge that there are always some "phreaks" that lean libertarian or anarchist that would be happy to fill the void left if Linux becomes entirely compromised.

Well, it's back to school for me to get that PhD in computer science that I never wanted.

But seriously, if this and many of the other posts on tech don't drive it home, I think it is incumbent upon any man who is remotely concerned about this kind of stuff to beef up his tech knowledge and skills. I am just old enough to remember when home computers weren't as user friendly. I remember booting out of the old DOS, etc. This actually got me interested in writing basic batch files and messing around. But the companies made these systems (specifically the OSs) way more "user friendly". As a result, I have several younger family members who are in no way as tech literate as I am. That isn't how that is supposed to work. They are supposed to laugh at me for not knowing how to program my DVR while they figure out the easiest way to torrent GoT.

I think it has come full circle for the serious. These systems are so "user friendly" now that they "help" you by storing all your usage data and phoning home or they "help" you by directing you to the search results that support their right-think. I guess the time has come to either Luddite it up or serious dig in to some "tech homework".

Yeah I started fucking with computers in the 90s, put together a 486 for fun, a pentium. Then my balls dropped and my dick started getting hard (not to be crude, but I was a bright young kid and yeah them hormones got me off that stuff for a while.) It's really not complicated but yeah I doubt many younger kids do that now, just get prefab off the shelves (probably not understanding CPU, ram, GPU, the superiority of SSD, other than gamers.)

Approximately 2 years ago, I switched from Linux (as a user since Debian Woody) to FreeBSD because of Lennart Poettering's efforts to destroy it as a usable desktop.

I very much grew to appreciate the engineering and stability of the system, and was on the verge of committing my time to the project as a package maintainer and contributor.

Sadly, FreeBSD succumbed to this nonsense well ahead of Linux, adopting this as its new dose of trannyCoC. (For reference: the original Code of Conduct)

For myself I will be moving on to the FreeBSD spinoff TrueOS. Some Linux distros which are as of yet unpenetrated by trannyCoC are Debian, Gentoo and Arch.

There is a lot going on here.

1. There are a lot of Corporations with their hands in the honeypot. One of them is Microsoft who is now a member of the Linux Foundation. It is easy to say this is a sci-op of the government...but its easier to say this is a sci-op of Microsoft and friends (Google, perhaps? Android is based on linux). Microsoft usually does 2 things with competition: Buys it out and integrates it...or buys it out and destroys it.
2. Nothing is safe. Anything considered free will be taken over by people who wish to destroy that freedom. Ask yourself who has a vested interest in doing that?
3. When someone is banned from social media their "effective speech options" decrease. The biggest risk to banning someone from contributing to the Ljnux OS here is a fork of the linux kernel. I am wondering if there was a threat of doing that against Linus Torvalds.

If anyone here is concerned with a "freeOS" should do research now. Before it was "what is the most quality distro". Now its "what distro is most free". Like VPNs...distros exist across the world, not just US.

How would we even know if Tails were compromised? Hash file checks from years ago?

There's not an easy beginner's turnkey solution at the moment, but there are ways with a lot of available documentation which will allow you to get there. A good starting point would be building a 'hygenic gentoo' along the lines my good friend Stanislav lays out in this tutorial. That recipe is for a particular single board computer, but a lot of the list of things he cuts out and versions of supporting software he chooses (like keeping gcc below version 5) can be adapted to any hardware platform. Gentoo is well documented and lets you build your own system out of the parts you want to build your own Linux out of.

When Cuntoo hits release in the near future, it will simplify having a minimal hygenic base from which you simply have to get the software you need to do your work.

This is not as easy on its face as using NSA trapware like Tor as a magical incantation which allows you to believe you are protected, but going through with it will make you a more capable person in today's world.

Up until version 5.7 it was easy enough to suggest plopping OpenBSD on your computer and done, but when the Microsoft money came to them they started making their own questionable architecture choices. It's still probably one of the better choices, but less hygienic than it used to be.

This sounds like a burden. Like game, foreign languages, exercise and throwing a punch... the work you can do for yourself here makes you a better, more capable person. Is this going to help you rake in the pussy? Probably not. Is it going to give you a fuckton of education and experience you can use to stomp SJWs "in tech"? Hell yes!

As far as Netflix, games, and all that fun shit just get a decent tablet and treat it like the toy it is.

It's gotten to the point that if you want any freedom in this space, you need a phD in computer science. The amount of hours I have put into this sort of thing, learning about programming, understanding the underworkings of computers, I have probably already completed a 4 year degree in under 1.5 years. Admittedly, I am still scratching the surface of what is an un-ending mountain of knowledge in this space, and I'm ahead of 98% of people.

The comment about user friendliness and "dumbing down" OS's is 100% accurate. There is nobody that I know outside of the computer wizards that I have partnered with that know what a command line is and would think that their computer is broken or has a virus if one popped up. It's hard to picture what the average person's computer literacy is after you've gone down the rabbit hole, you think that everyone knows that these big corporations are spying on you, and that everyone uses a VPN when they go to a coffeeshop incase someone is hacking their banking info by hijacking the free and unsecure wifi.

The average person is completely blind to what is going on. It's not hard to learn how to code, but people think that it's nerdy and uncool, and would rather be off doing anything else. And then they expect women to get into this field; one of completely abstract thinking, not much human interaction, and deep study over thousands of lines of a language that less than 1% of the world's population understands.

The problem with putting a CoC on this shit is that you have now essentially decreased the quality, efficiency, and speed of development by orders of magnitude. Chastising a bunch of white men for creating the technological world around us is easy because in case you haven't looked at the demographics of computer science, it's in excess of 85% male. Where are the people crying out about the Asian and Indian men involved in the space?? Get real. Go look at Google's demographic, you'll laugh.

At the end of the day, this stuff was never meant to be politicized. It was meant to be built on merit, because if it isn't then people will gravitate to the companies and projects that are actually built to be good and serve their customers with ease and efficiency. I don't care if a woman or a man is writing the code, only that it's good code. If a dog can write code, I'll hire it. That's the mentality of these people, and as soon as you throw in diversity, they laugh because they know who's going to school for this stuff; even after the pushes for women in tech, they still seem to pick inter-human relationship related fields en-mass... It's like they're telling us something.

Command line? Thats a pipe (pun intended) dream at this point for the average younger generation.

A good number of freshmen these days don't even know how to create new folders or files using the GUI. I asked some to create a new folder on the desktop and create a new text file it. Got blank stares.


- "just open your file explorer /finder, navigate to your desktop, and click the new folder button"
- blank stares
- "ok go to your desktop, right click, select new folder"
- some people got it, some still confused about the desktop. Repeat the same confusion when telling them to create a new .txt file in there. No clue what a file extension was. No clue how to open that file using a text editor and edit it. Nothing. I felt like i was talking to 90 year old women that were seeing a computer for their first time. Definitely not what I was expecting.

Not sure what they are teaching these days in high schools, but it definitely needs some updating.

A Phd gets a person stuck chasing one largely academic problem. "Coding" is great and all, but a lot of meaningful technological literacy is to be had in something more like the work a mechanic does. It's the work of taking moving parts and making them work to serve you. It is also work very open to being self taught from the documentation (With the caveat that if the documentation appears to be disconnected from the reality of how something works you have probably identified a turd).

The degree is not a signifier of literacy, and it can actually be an anti-signal that someone's been conditioned to operate inside a particular USG/Pantsuit/Google/Cisco defined box. Even studying in a computer science degree program, a person is going to require substantial self directed study to become literate. Think of all the stoner philosophy majors who have never wrestled with the classics or social science majors who have never dug into Plato's Republic and apply that picture to computing.

Today's problem of navigating computing isn't one of degrees or credentials, but literacy. Discussions of the average person aren't going to be incredibly relevant. For most of history the average person walked barefoot in the dirt their entire life. The abilities or lack thereof in the average person are fundamentally disconnected from any meaningful kind of literacy. It's also not in the interest of any Big Tech firms or Big Soy to encourage the emergence of an actual outline for achieving literacy in this space because literate people are independent people. They want customers who are users of their products and they want employees who are users trained to fiddle with the knobs.

Big tech does not want people who can build, and it shows in the sloppy quality of their products.

A man seeks mastery. If you have a computer you use as a treasured work tool, there's nothing wrong with a spartan minimalism. Likewise there is nothing wrong with having toys as long as you are responsible enough to not choke on the pieces. Confusing the fun toys with the treasured work tools is a surefire recipe for pain down the line.
