Alcohol's effects on body fat
This article is very informative. Give it a read if you have some time.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson194.htm

Here's the summary from the bottom of the page:

Can one drink and lose body fat?

So what is one to do? Given alcohol plays a large role in celebration and social cohesion, can one completely refrain from its use? It really depends on the goals a person has. Most could probably consume moderate levels of alcohol (two or three standard drinks three to four times per week) without any problem.

Larger amounts (more than seven drinks at any one time), often described as binge drinking, can cause major problems and probably should not be advocated. Maintaining reasonable levels of health, while enjoying a few drinks - using moderation as the key - should be no problem. However, athletes - who definitely are not your average population - wanting to improve performance, and those wanting to lose weight are a different issue entirely.

Alcohol, as shown, will negate any efforts to lose body fat and will alter performance for the worst. The best advice would be to totally abstain until performance and weight loss goals are obtained.

Ray Audette, author of the NeanderThin Diet, provides sound advice for anyone wanting to lose weight while drinking alcohol. Remember, to be at your best physically you can't have it both ways and Mr Audette provides a good rationale as to why.

"Don't Drink Alcohol[.] It is best not to consume alcohol in any amount from any source. Alcohol is a by-product of yeast digestion (the yeast equivalent of urine) and is known to damage the stomach, kidneys, and liver. Alcohol adds fat principally by producing cravings for both it and other carbohydrates (see snack trays at any bar) and even other addictive substances (ask any former smoker.) It is almost impossible to drink alcohol and follow the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. If you must drink, do so only on special occasions (once or twice a year) and stick to alcohols derived from fruit (wine and champagne.)"

Yeah. I've cut out drinking in favor of fitness goals. Plus, I like to be in control of the situation when talking to chicks.

Mixx was on the same page. To each his own, though.

That's a good read. I've hit a plateau with my weight. I want to drop about 20 more pounds to lean out some and my weekends are killing me. I may be going dry for a little while.

Yea its a tough decision to make. I just discovered game my first semester at college as I simultaneously decided I wanted to get in better shape last fall. Since I care more about improving my game and getting laid than losing 10 pounds and getting more toned I'm putting it off until summer break (2 1/2 months at home with nothing to do and few people to talk to).

I only have 1-3 drinks when I do drink, and it's rare for me to drink more than two times per week.

I smoke weed because it's healthier, and fucks me up better.

I found this interesting:

For alcohol to significantly lower testosterone, you need to do some serious drinking. ~120 g alcohol, the equivalent of 10 beers, will lower testosterone by 23% for up to 16 hours after the drinking binge.

Well that's one thing that we can certainly agree on.

Seriously, drinking alcohol in excess of 3 drinks makes me feel like shit the next day. Drinking really seems to fuck up my sleep. Nothing is worse than having your whole next day ruined because you are hung over and haven't slept well, I can barely think straight, let alone get shit done or lift weights.

Therefore once or twice a week is where I'm at with my drinking. Recently it's been two nights out a week, but I'm thinking of dropping it to one.

If you're traveling in a sick spot like Brazil or Thailand it's probably worth it to sacrafice fitness, sleep, and dealing with hangovers in order to party hard.

Ive heard this BS before.

How is ethanol produced from grain sugar different from ethanol produced from fruit sugar?

I don't drink often maybe once every 2 weeks at most, but it fucks with my weight for at least a week afterwards. I really would like to not really drink anything, but you're looked down upon here at university if you're at a party and you're not drinking, chicks think its weird and you're weird/not worthy of the puzzay. I wont drink this summer though save for a few patented beach-vino-close maneuvers.

stopping drinking made no difference to my weight at all. I know plenty of people with bf % lower than 15 who drink in excess of 25 pints a week

Additionally, there's some evidence that resveratrol (a phytochemical compound found in red wine) can help to retain existing muscle mass, etc. So hey, yet more information suggesting that a bit of wine is good for you. Go figure.

I think testosterone levels have a lot to do with it. I used to be able to eat anything I wanted all day long. T levels drop off after 25. You have to work out out harder to keep fit.

I concur with OG Cal -anything more than 3 drinks and I'm usually feeling it the next day

pathetic but perhaps a reality of being in your 30s

despite consciously trying to limit my intake when going out...it can be very very hard to just keep it at 5

agree that on vacation etc with nothing to do the next day I don't care as much...

RE: Alcohol's effects on body fat
Alcohol is pure energy.

1 gramm of alcohol contains 7kcal, making alcohol the most energy dense food right after fat which contains 9 kcal/gramm.

Sugar, e.g., contains "only" 4kcal/gramm.

Alcohol does many other things, lowers testosterone, raises estrogens, and fucks up your metabolism etc. etc...

So, it doesn't really matter whether you drink beer, vodka or whine...you'll get fat on any kind of alcohol if you consume a lot.

I just looked it up....1 glas of beer contains roughly as many calories as 1 glass of Coke...there you go.

Those guys who drink vodka or whine and stay skinny either drink very moderately or in the case of alcoholics drink so much that they skip their meals altogether and just drink...

I would say this, and the effects of an office job. Once you're out of school or working in a white collar setting, it's hard to burn calories. I spend way too much time in front of my computer these days, so by necessity I've had to cut back a lot on my portion size and drinking habits. All of my coworkers are in the same boat.

I love beer, and used to drink large amounts of expensive microbrews, but I've pretty much cut that out of my diet now. I just can't get enough exercise to keep up with the caloric consumption. Now I usually just have a glass of scotch at night if I'm really craving a drink, and I'm trying to cut back on that, too.

RE: Alcohol's effects on body fat
When i´m alone at home i never drink. Not even a glass of wine
When i´m with friends hanging / watching an sport game, we usually buy beers. I drink just one glass. My friends dont bother because they get drunk very fast.
When i´m on a date SHE DRINKS , DRINKS , DRINKS. 90% of the girls i met in my life can´t handle more than two glasses of beer ( large ones). They get tipsy and much easier to close the deal later. If i drink more than her i usually kill my chances and my game gets very sloppy.
About Fat....well you need to quit on beer AND junk food for starters. Otherwise it doesn´t make any sense.
