I find threads like this amusing because, setting aside Russia, i have travelled extensively in the 4 largest and most diverse countries in the world.

In tems of travel, delete South Africa and add Fiji, New Zealand and Thailand for a grand total of 8 countries.

Any idiot with a bit of game, a Eurorail pass and two weeks to kill could beat my flag count for either or both of travel and notches.

But really, if the USA and China only count as one each (and to a lesser extent, Canada and Australia) then the EU and FSU only count as one. Polynesia should only count as one.

Alternatively, larger, diverse countries could count as more. Canada, for instance, could count at least 4: generic WASP, Newfie (or Cape Brettoner), French Canadian and First Nation. Toss in first generation immigrants and that goes up exponentially. As a worst best example, a majority of Toronto is not white and there are over 100 languages spoken in the city. My three closest friends married a Brazilian, a Mexican and a Portuguese (and later divorced her to shack up with a Hong Kong girl).

I think there's something to this.

If we are looking for a metric by which a globetrotting debauchee can measure his accomplishments, then the flag metric has the important weakness that one can be very successful according to that criterion without going anywhere. For example, it is plausible for a man in London to rack up tens of flags without venturing beyond the M25. This will also be true for other highly international cities such as New York and Paris.
