This is a high profile case, with many twists and incongruencies, that is why people still talk about that. Hundreds of white kids (or of any race) disappear every year and no one talks about it.

Ah jealous, drunken dudes. The cause of many problems the world over.

I have a few stories like this. I've been surrounded by several dudes who were about to kick my ass at a house party because I didn't back down when they started talking smack to me. Turns out the ringleader was the ex-bf of the girl who invited me to the party. He did not like having me around and made that very clear from the first to last drink. I'm not sure why I didn't leave once the heckling got obvious, but I was dumb as fuck.

In hindsight, I should have just shut the fuck up and left, but in your early 20s you're a moron. Luckily, a really really brave friend of mine (a chick) walked into the crowd, grabbed my arm and literally said "Fortis! you are really funny! Wanna go smoke!?" and pulled me out before I could tell her to fuck off. At the time I was heated as fuck, but looking back she pretty much saved my life.

Shame that this young guy died, though. Yeah, I think I can be a little forgiving since he was 22 and probably had no clue.

This just goes to you show you that the world is just not as safe as we make it out to be. Be on guard while traveling and consider walking away.

I'm not saying I would have done any better in that situation at that age, but I do hope some young dudes read that story and find this thread and remember that not every fight is worth having. Sometimes it's better to walk away alive with wounded pride than to die pointlessly.

I also hope they consider bringing cops back to that area. That would have really kept the tension down.

How is this shocking? If I walk into a club packed with black people, or any ethnic group far from white, and I do something that ticks off a local dude, regardless of whatever I did to make him mad, if I go after him, the odds are pretty fucking good that I get stomped by a large group and you better believe its racially motivated, and I accept that.

Cant really blame the black dude, youre out somewhere and you havent done anything wrong and youre a few drinks deep and someone fucks with you, it takes a lot of experience to be able to just shut the fuck up. If he had hit on the guys gf or something then yeah but if the dude did nothing then i think 90 percrnt of guys would be pissed and stand their ground.

That said, i wouldnt really treat it as a murder and say they ment to kill him. Truth is its a bsr fight that happens everywhere and by a small chnce ended in a tragedy.

In some places guys will shoot or knife you to kill, this was just a fight where a mob jumped in with friends and ended with a person dead. You can punch someone one time and kill them some times.

All around fucked up situation but i wouldnt draw conclusions from it about serbs or greeks. Just now in budva a bunch of serbs invited me to their table then helped me chat up girls around us.

Happened to me recently where I was in an Asian country with my white friend. I'm asian myself and fit in with the locals. We bought a bottle but not a table at a fairly high end club and was having a blast. We were waving to girls and they were coming over to have drinks and chat etc. We were definitely the social in the club.

Around 3AM I was blackout drunk which was my first mistake but from what my friend tells me one of the guys leaving the club socked me in the eye and nose. I barely remember it. I guess the assailant was immediately escorted out of the club. My friend had to say goodbye to the Singaporean girl that he was gaming to attend to me.

Next morning I wake up still drunk but with a broken nose and my left eye completely shut. Can't see out of it. I knew my nose was fucked up but was definitely worried about my eye, especially since I had Lasik done. I was terrified that the flap that they create for Lasik had come open or something. Thank god it was a third world country where you can show up at a moments notice at an eye doctor's office on a saturday and get seen.

Had to go back multiple times to the eye doctor and get a CT scan for my head. Also had to reset my nose and wear nose plugs to help set the cartilage for 48 hours. I was lucky that I didn't have permanent vision loss. Doctor said that if the assailant had been sober and punched a little bit harder it wouldn't ruptured my cornea and probably caused internal nerve damage. Instead I got the worst case of blunt trauma to cornea and a broken nose. Once I got back to the states I had to spend another $400 to get it checked again and not having insurance didn't help it either.

Locals in the country were recommending I go the police and get the security footage to try and find this guy but honestly I wasn't even mad at him. I got black out drunk in a foreign country and knowing that locals don't like foreigners talking to their girls went out of my way to create a social scene where all eyes were on me and my white friend. Funny thing was that throughout the night multiple girls kept emphasizing to us to be careful.

Will not drink like that again.

This shit could happen in Asia, like in Monsquid's story but it could also happen in the USA too!

When I was his age, we would go to bars and clubs in hoods we did not grow up in. If a nigga had beef (especially) over a bitch, we let them have it and left. If I ever rolled solo and went out, I especially never hit people back. Someone step on my shoes? "My fault playa, sorry about that." and I kept it movin. If they got in my face with stupid shit, I left.

Where I am from, getting into it like this, dudes will "Come see bout cha" in that parking lot waitin in some busted up Buick Regal on 22s with a choppa across their lap. That's if they don't shoot inside the joint first with a pistol.

StackGsMan made some good points. This dude had a severely false sense of security. Clubs and bars are more tame than they were in the 90s and 2000s, in the USA, but that does not mean places outside the country are safe to fight in either.

Serbs are some really tough motherfuckers, especially the gang/thug ones. Research is important when going places. Had this been in South China, and he tussled with a Triad without realizing it, the outcome would have been the same. This might be somewhat race related, but had he been a tough talking Brit, they would have still beat him up.

It's one thing if this altercation happened in a park, a bank, a grocery store, etc. This is a bar/club. I used to bodyguard a little bit back in the day before I started traveling. I have dodged and parried black women trying to big face me or throw shoes. I have verbally deescalated plenty street dudes looking for a fight with just about anyone in VIP because they just want to look hard in front of the hoes. Not once did I ever hit back or retaliate. The thing is, you don't know WHO they came into the place with. Let alone WHO they really are. They could be 10 deep, maybe even 60. I don't care how many black belts you have, those are super shitty odds and no pussy is worth dying over. Nas said it best, Pussy Kills.

Dude didn't deserve to die, but if that is how you act while being drunk over a hoe, he could have been killed for this just about anywhere in the world honestly. I don't think it is a conscious decision.

When people travel they aren't in real life, they are on "their trip," or "their gap year," or reconnecting with "their roots."

It's like how the mind shifts in the movie theater from real life to watching a movie life.

They are on "their adventure before they settle down."

I don't know exactly what the mental switch that is flipped, but it is similar to the switch that is flipped in the mind between reality and fiction.

I see this all the time, and not just in other people, but in myself.

First time I travelled, to Ireland, was picked up hitching by a dead ringer for John Cleese but with an Irish accent lecturing me about tinkers, and I felt like I was in a movie and not in real life.

Oh these quaint Irish and their accents and their ways. Like I had travelled to an unknown section of Disney World called Irelandland.

All the Guinness and the Irish humor and the folk music had me feeling like someone living in a tv show.

That was a long time ago, first time away from home, and I didn't snap out of it till I got to serious IRA country, and one minute the songs they are singing are more than just songs, and a Fenian newspaper is being passed around and paid for, and the singing in that country pub is more like a Maori haka.

And little by little I figured it out. Why in that Northern Irish town that seemed deserted did someone I never met ask me why I was taking photos of the bombed out church?

I was young, and inexperienced, and a long way from home.

And lucky.

Unfortunately for this kid, he didn't have the luxury of learning incrementally.

We are all, always, playing catch up in life, trading in our illusions for the reality right in front of us, tapping us on the forehead, saying wake up dummy.

I can't know exactly what was happened to this guy. Maybe he had the experience to know he was fucking up, and just drank too much that night.

I do know how easy it is to let your mind drift into a private movie, at any moment, and so I can't really judge the kid.

It seems that i grow up in a similar place to TravelerKai. Bad situations and the dangerous environment teach you many things. Some things i learned is to avoid problems at all cost, not to drink a lot, have an idea how to act in specific situations.

I did nightgame alone and I have seen How some people show or put their knives or guns to another guy in front of all people and disco bodyguards in a "decent club" of my town or another places. Mostly, these problems started for a chick, jealousy, stupid stuff could be avoided. Next day, local newspapers and radio got "Another guy was killed outside club"............."

I think the problem is not that they are serbian, greeks, others. These tragedies happen everywhere. Sad for the guy and i agree that he wasn't doing something bad, But Shits happen and he wasn't prepare for it.

I agree that it doesn't matter if you are tall,strong, have black bells or whatever, A small, Weak guy with a gun can disappear your beautiful life in seconds. @Debeguiled: You are right, but trips are not a "happy movie" and we need to be careful because many of us won't receive second opportunities.

I think the most dangerous aspect for a new traveler is to not be able to spot "bad dudes" because you lack the cultural cues you are used to. I would say I can tell trouble in any kind of people now from all ethnicities, but I definitely couldn't during my first travels.

This story was horrible, and there I was an American, surrounded by Serbs in Belgrade at the time this happened. I've thought a lot about it.

First, right after I heard the news, it was like, ok, we'll pretend it never happened, I literally know nothing about the circumstances. So I didn't bring it up to any of my close serb friends. Plus, what would I say anyway?

And then, they brought it up, and it was like, "ok, we'll talk about it", but just to humor you. And I mean it, I avoided talking politics to get to know the serb people without having to broach uncomfortable subjects. And it worked, and I came to like them a lot. Especially in regards to how they treat foreigners.

I want to emphasize this point: Serbs are maligned so many times over, you feel real bad when this stuff happens.

My serb friends told me this: the dude was hitting on chicks, and because it was a serb dominated bar, they wanted to fight, from their perspective, he was getting touchy with THEIR bartender. (emphasizing to me the serbs weren't necessarily doing it out of racial motive, but out of more us vs. them mentality, which serbs def. have, or a territorial motive).

I feel real bad about the american, it was very likely his first time abroad. And that's daunting, trying to figure out the norms, or even for that matter realizing you don't have to tip, if you are completely new to traveling abroad (we were all there at some point).

The part of greece he was in has a reputation as being a serb/brit shitshow. When people travel, sometimes they act the stereotype, or feel emboldened because they're with a big group of countrymen. And they feel like they have a blank check to act however they want, because vacation. Thus they get very drunk and do a lot of drugs and fuck like rabbits.

I am always alert visiting new places, but sometimes there's a lull into complacency.

I've only wanted to fight while drinking maybe one time (i'm a pretty nice drinker), and it was for some stupid reason. My friends, in Serbia, told me I was drunk, and that it would be no big deal the next day. And they were right.

In Europe, basically everyone is disarmed, and also, it is a lot safer generally than in the US. So yeah, fight if you want, but you have a lot of people that get kicks out of getting drunk at the bar and then streetfighting. And maybe the mistake is to think you will be ok, because in america, a fight can end with someone pulling out a gun--and it really will end then, with the non-gun holder retreating, or someone ending up shot. But in Europe, people really like their streetfighting, so you don't want to be outnumbered, which is what happened in this case. A lot of countries have chips on their shoulder because of their circumstances, so when faced with the opportunity to fight foreigners, their citizens like to gang up. Well sounds like you being white enough possibly allowed you to avoid getting killed in that fight as well. Serbs are little better than wild animals in their worst form. Not at all different than the wild animals in Chicago that could kill your white ass over an inadvertent stare.

I hope you learned your lesson, but do not give the impression that being white or having local friends, can prevent others getting killed in a dispute with other locals. Some of these people are gangsters and might have thrashed you and your buddies, if they were that element. Wrong place at the wrong time can happen to anyone.

At the end of the day, everyone's safety is their personal responsibility. If you do not know how to deescalate a tense situation, you better watch a video on Youtube on how to do so. Lots of free vids on that. If you can mack a hoe, you have the skills to mack a dude into chilling the fuck out. Ego problems and pride cause these situations 9 times out of 10. The other might be skin color or religious stuff.

Look - violent crime in Greece is almost non-existent. This was more akin to some brawl. No idea whether the Serbs mistook him for a fresh violent African refugee or they were criminals.

Fact is - and the stats back it up - it's infinitely safer for a black guy to party in Greece even when surrounded by almost all white guys than to party in rough black neighborhoods in the US. This happened within 30 seconds and was more a drunken brawl.

The cases are so few and far in between that you have to look for them:

Beaten up and died.


Stabbed by a cab driver after he taunted him with a laser pointer.

Young men will get into brawls. Young men will die in brawls in the future and there is not much you can do about it unless we have some future high-tech of advanced medicine and safety shield/foam/nano-bot tech suit that will protect us from harm. But until then young men will die.

Also - most young men dying in Greece are in accidents, car/bike accidents, drowning, jumping into the sea and bashing your head in, slipping from rocks, taking selfies and dying while trying to get the shot of your life.

There are no KKK-gangs bashing black folk especially since most tourists coming to Greece are well-off enough and the Greeks are quite protective of them. At best they are going to overcharge you for your cab or try to scam you.





Serbia - where a black guy can feel like a celebrity and little kids come up to you and take pictures, because they see a cool black guy there.
