Got really drunk, decided to drive home, passed out at the wheel, and flipped my car over in a field at about 4 AM one night several years ago. They took me to the crash site, which in the daylight looked really fucking bad. My car was completely destroyed. There were at least 8 squad cars blocking off the area and about 20 onlookers. The cops told me they expected to find a dead body inside, but were taken off guard when they found it empty with nobody in sight.

The lead investigator asked me some questions, gave me a speech about how I was lucky I wasn't dead or hadn't killed anyone else, and then told me to go to the hospital. Since they couldn't place me behind the wheel at the time of the accident and couldn't prove that I was driving the car when it crashed, I didn't get charged with a DUI. At the end of the day, I didn't even receive a citation.

I did cut down my drinking considerably after this incident and refuse to drive while intoxicated, so it did serve as a solid kick in my ass.
