The problem is that complications can occur as long as 10 years after a seemingly successful procedure. And many people who did it long ago don't want you to know what issues they have.

RE: LASIK thread
I got LASIK with wavefront about ten year ago. I had an astigmatsuim which are difficult to correct , so had to have two laser zaps when the first one did quite work.
- I would recommend you go to a doctor (named) that publishes outcomes. I met my surgeon and reviewed his stats.
- A lot of large companies like vision express , ultralase etc you cant chose or meet your surgeon.

Cheap is not the best in these kind of operations.
I used Advanced Vision Care on London Harley Street , 3 friends also did the same.

.

It actually doesn't matter which doctor or equipment you use. The technique is the same.

In lasik, a flap is created, which never heals, and corneal nerves are cut, which never properly regrow. All of this creates a dry eye syndrome and lasik ectasia. Plus, uneven cornea causes high order aberations manifesting in night vision problems, halos, starbursts, etc.

Just think about it - the cornea is first cut, then flipped back and burned with lazer. How the feck would the corneal nerves regrow after this?

It also causes earlier cataracts in people after lasik, compared to general population who did not have it.

For those considering lasik/prk - don't risk it!

All of this is my humble opinion after reading a lot about the procedure when considering doing it myself.

The simple fact that the lasik flap never heals, and in case of prk the upper layer is totally removed considerably weakening the cornea, is enough to stay away from these procedures.

Nah man, it seems like it's more than just your humble opinion after reading a lot about the procedure and considering doing it yourself. I've read this thread from its beginning and it looks as if you're on some kind of holy war/jihad against corrective eye surgery. I've checked your posting history and just about half your posts on this forum are related to "warning" people about the dangers of lasik and those pesky, unscrupulous, money hungry eye surgeons. Not just in this thread, but in many others.

Nobody pursues such a mundane topic as Lasik with this level of intensity unless they have an axe to grind or a financial interest. Certainly just "reading about it" would not induce such an energetic and relentless effort to blast Lasik from a normal person. Now, if you had Lasik yourself and suffered an adverse outcome that would explain your vehement attacks on the procedure, but in that case why say "All of this is my humble opinion after reading a lot about the procedure when considering doing it myself?"

No, I think it is far more likely you are an optometrist and see corrective eye surgery as a direct financial threat to your line of work. I find this all the more likely given your repeated, unsubstantiated yet overweeing assertions about the integrity (or lack thereof) of eye surgeons and pronouncements on the technical soundness of lasik procedures. This is not the behavior of a layperson who idly considered doing lasik once upon a time but decided against it. Every additional Lasik/PRK customer is one fewer schmuck who needs to visit an optometrist once or twice a year for a new prescription as his eyes progressively get worse, and I think that's probably what's bugging you.

All I can say is that optomestrists also benefit from lazer eye surgeries - people need reading glasses, sun glasses, scleral lenses after lasik/prk, etc. It is great business, but it's not in the best interests of the general public.

What? Just a couple posts above you clearly try to pass yourself off as a disinterested layperson who "just did some research" on lasik whereas in reality you are an optometrist and have a vested interest in condemning the procedure for financial reasons. That's disingenuous at best and outright dishonest at worst It's none of my business, but I feel I have to mention it because you've interjected your own personal financial interests into every thread on this forum where people are discussing corrective eye surgery, and that's the kind of contribution nobody needs or wants. People here are trying to make educated decisions based off of what is best for their eyes, not what is best for your bank account.

RE: LASIK thread
My only interest ('vested' was ironic) is to try to defend medical ethics (first, do no harm), which is clearly violated in these procedures, and try to dissuade some members, who think of doing lasik/prk, from doing it.

The following are a couple of quotes from Dr. Boshnick, one of the few specialists treating post-lasik patients fitting them with scleral lenses:

Dr. Boshnick: The Dr. Oz show recently highlighted the problems associated with LASIK in a very dramatic and accurate manner. This is a completely unnecessary and potentially life altering procedure with disastrous implications. Sadly, I have seen thousands of post-LASIK patients with symptoms of severe dry eye, along with ocular pain, distorted vision to name just a few. Stick with your eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Dr. Boshnick:
My feeling is that lasik surgery and other refractive surgical procedures exist solely to enrich doctors and the corporations that manufacture the laser equipment and not to benefit mankind. Because a large part of my ophthalmic practice involves restoring vision to those who have experienced varying degrees of vision loss from LASIK, my advice is not to get involved with this procedure. If you have experienced compromised vision as a result of LASIK, you are more than welcome to contact me to discuss what can be done to help you regain quality vision.
If you can see well with your eyeglasses or contact lenses, don't even think about getting involved with lasik. If you are having vision or comfort issues with your contact lenses, make an appointment with a contact lens specialist and have him/her refit you with a lens design that will address these issues. Whatever you, the patient, decides to do, by all means stay within the non-surgical arena.

I understand that what I am posting here on lasik/prk can be disturbing for those who already did it.
But it's mainly for those contemplating it.
I guess people should understand the risks as it's not as harmless as advertised.
I hope I'll not be banned for this; I am just trying to do some good ))

RE: LASIK thread
Well even if you have the surgery and no vision issues I wouldn't recommend going 10 years without seeing an optometrist either. They also check dryness of eyes, inflammation of the eyelids and more, pressure and bleeding of the retina if your diabetic (its a good idea if you have last one to go every year, the retina is the canary in the coal mine in a way). Eventually when older the muscle that controls the inner lens of the eye gets slower and stiff and you would need bifocals even after lasik and very common for the lens to cloud up (cataracts).

Your claim that corrective eye surgery is against "medical ethics" is not very persuasive. In fact, it is absolutely meaningless. I may as well say the opposite, that not doing corrective eye surgery is against medical ethics, and who's to say you're right and I'm wrong. And who is this Dr. Boshnik you mention in your attempt to persuade us that your attacks on lasik have nothing to do with your financial interest as an optometrist? Why, it seems Dr. Boshnik is an optometrist, just like you! So in effect we have an optometrist (you) trying to prove to us that your attacks on lasik have nothing to do with your vested financial interests as an optometrist by citing...another optometrist!

Your disingenuous behavior is not doing any favors to your profession. I think from now on, you should preface your advice with regards to lasik with a disclaimer that you have a financial stake in people not getting the procedure done. Since you're such a selfless person whose only concern is that people have ALL the info before they decide which way to go surely you can see that the identity of the person giving them advice is something they should know as well, right?Wink

RE: LASIK thread
I'll try not to post any more on lasik. We are all adults and should do our homework before any medical procedure.
Sometimes, lasik seems like a kind of a karma-machine, and those destined to get fecked up will feck themselve with it no matter what you advise. As such, we shouldn't interefere with karma's workings. ))

I tried to advise some people I personally know and they did it anyway. People are just not aware what they are getting into. I guess many people do it just based on opinions of friends and advertising, without doing any research whatsoever, which is weird to me. I guess only the medics understand what this involves.

RE: LASIK thread
Went ahead and got Lasik the other day.

The procedure itself was completely painless, though afterwards you are encouraged to sleep the rest of the day since for the next 6 hours or so if the pain meds wear off your eyes might burn.

My vision is now 20/15. I need to take eye drops for the next 1-3 months as my eyes heal. Doctor says they are on pace. There is a very very minor discomfort if it's been to long between eye drops, but they say that's normal so soon after surgery. So far it has gone exactly as they said it would, but it will take another month or two to know for sure.

I got lasik 15 plus year ago and it was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me. To go from being shitty vision and dealing with glasses and uncomfortable contacts to having perfect vision in an hour and a few thousand $$$'s still blows my mind. I take it for granted but reading threads like this make me realize how fortunate I am to have had the surgery done.

I can feel the need for eyedrops less and less. If my job didn't require me to stare at a computer all day I feel like they'd barely be necessary. Biggest issue now is light sensitivity, which is also improving day over day.

ICL is what the procedure they wanted to do on me, anyone else as blind as I am and had it done? Sounds like they implant a lens in your eye that replaces the natural "defective" one.

Did you get a consult with surgeon, might be free. Than you can find out all about risks, if insurance will cover it, recovery, meds and the surgery itself.

RE: LASIK thread
I had LASIK done in December 2002. Best thing I ever did. Beforehand I had to wear thick glasses even to drive, after LASIK my vision went to 20/13.

Now in December 2017, I'm noticing that my near vision is declining somewhat (coming up on age 40) but I still don't need glasses at all. I plan to return to the eye clinic where I had it done to see if a "touch-up" is possible. If not, having to get reading glasses in a few years is fine; the quality of life I had for the 15 years without glasses was awesome.

10/10 would lase again.

"Okay (and I'm laughing now, because this is so funny), so we're A) not supposed to give you flowers, B) pay you compliments, or C) look at you. Anything else? Because I'm struggling to figure out the reason why after hearing that, I'm feeling like I'd rather get fucked in the ass by a Cape Buffalo than ever have to sit through dinner with you. Maybe you can figure it out for me. When you do, let me know. I'll be at Natasha's house."

You said 'thick glasses', what was your minus?

IMO, even if it was seemingly ok in your case, you shouldn't recommend it, as some people are really fuck by this procedure.

Also, even if you think it worked, there are long-term consequences:
http://www.lasikcomplications.com/long_term_issues.html

For example, this dude developed massive floaters after 13 years:

In short, whoever reads this, don't risk it!
You friends may say it's the best investment, but you don't know how they really see.

Deuce your getting close to presbyopia age. A touch up might not help. Normally people with perfect vision most of their lives will have trouble reading and start using the reader glasses you get in pharmacies.
