IMO Houston won't recover. Pro-longed low oil prices, demographic change toward socialism (most recent mayors have been democrats), now this. Prior to this, zerohedge had extensive articles on Houston having the most vacant commercial spaces with companies downsizing. It's become obvious what happens if you buy property near the gulf of mexico....I can't imagine another wave of investment to rebuild it all. From what I've heard Houston has been slowly turning into a shithole long before Harvey.

Houston's economy has been pretty solid the last few years, with high demographic growth and low unemployment. Its economy has diversified, while at the same time being the energy industry capital of the world. It has very low housing prices and a pro-business diversified economy. It's going to bounce back, albeit with more zoning laws and tighter norms, you're going to see for instance new houses built on stilts in flood-prone zones.

You're actually going to see a construction boom there in the next few years as people are going to rebuild.

For those that don't know where the church is located, it's in Greenway plaza. Interstate 59 was underwater at all exits and onramps. How would anyone had gotten into the church? I also find it hard to believe the immediate street around the church was not flooded, when it has flooded from different storms on several occasions.

Also, they are kind of similar to my church. They send lots of medical ambulances with missionaries around the world. We don't actually keep those at home. If we did, then sure we could rival the Red Cross. How is a church equipped to handle what the largest convention center in the city was not able to handle?

So again, if you needed shelter or had to be rescued by the Coast Guard, why would you want to go to a church? They don't have water bottles on hand, medical staff, police, beds, etc.

This is just another opportunity for typical idiot atheists, Muslims, or others to take the largest church in America down a peg or two in order to make Christianity look like a scam.

There are plenty of reasons to not like that church, this is not one of them.

In fact, even without preparation the Church should have been able to open their doors right away. Any Church worth it's salt runs a weekly food donation service to the poor, which means the pantries are always full of supplies for poor that come in on Sunday mornings.

Even if most people were not able to reach the Church due to flooding, there should have been a Priest there anyways for whoever could swim or boat to the premises - especially if you have a multi-million dollar budget. From a corporate perspective, this was a major PR fail. From a Christian perspective, it reeks of sinful hypocrisy of claiming to represent the word yet not being prepared for a massive disaster despite having incredible resources.

Even if Joel is not at fault, someone within the Church organization is and ought to be fired for this.

Why should church staff leave their own families behind just to go open up and run the church as a shelter? That's irresponsible for the church to do that. Also no one realized how bad the storm was going to be. That's too much hindsight logic.

Even the Cowboys and the Texans game is cancelled because both teams realized that players needed to get home and take care of their own families.

Again, like I said before, that church does not keep vast resources on site like a refugee shelter. They send all that stuff to India and Africa for missions work, like my church does. Maybe next time they will reconsider how much they send out or how they prepare the place, but again, that's hindsight stuff.

This is the worst natural disaster we have ever had here. Far worse than even Hurricane Ike. There will be lots to learn from.

If a church has millions in the bank they can afford to pay overtime. Wouldn't take much foresight at all, and apparently, that is what Olstein's church did in fact do:

As I eluded to earlier, some people like to point to people coming together and others like to find scapegoats. The media has always leaned towards exposing scapegoats for a number of reasons. Scapegoats makes the media feel like they are doing investigative journalism or even the right thing, regardless if the facts are accurate. The fact they can throw rocks at a white christian male probably makes the motive to create fake news all the more stronger.

I'm already starting to see a viral conspiracy circulating that the local politicians were privy to the strength of the storm and downplayed it. They were allegedly hoping to avoid mass fleeing which would cause more deaths. I wouldn't be surprised if the media picks up the story to show how Texans hate black people or whatever way they want to spin it.

I'm sure it's more gray area just like anything. They figured there was a 60% they'd get 50" or more with accompanying winds, with only a 25% it would blow right through (I'm just making up #s).

When you think about it, a record breaking hurricane hitting the 4th largest city in the U.S. causing 30 deaths...that's not bad.

In the last hour, 30 people died from hospital borne infections alone. 70 people died of heart disease. In the last hour. I'm just saying, 30 deaths makes me thankful for all the men who have developed such an incredible civilization here in the West.
