I just can't fathom that amount of restraint in that situation. I've been in a few "real" situations in NYC transit (not with a girlfriend) where I had to restrain myself, but that was only when I definitely knew I was outnumbered by bad-asses. That's when I shut the fuck up.

From the scene described in that video of some lone wolf following them from car to car that was not the case. He was telling his girlfriend to make a video for God's sake. If you're really outnumbered by bad-asses you don't even say that shit. You shut the fuck up, prepare for the worst and hope it all just passes.

That video made the the rounds here in Taiwan a lot; actually, the foreigner/his GF could have sued the Taiwanese retard as "verbal assault" is illegal in Taiwan. Yes, it's illegal to call someone a bad word here.

His best bet would have been to forcibly call the dude out, though. He was all bark and no bite after all.

All the (Taiwanese) people in this metro car heard the vile insults that the Chinese dude was uttering, loudly, aiming at the girlfriend. I therefore can't believe that the witnesses would have jumped to his defense, if the Chinese dude had received a slap in the face, even from a foreigner.

Avoid ANY physical confrontation with a local in Mainland China (in fact, never fight with a local in any country where the polices are corrupted).

If provoked verbally, try to defuse the situation.

If provoked physically in public, it’s better to just run away than to fight back. You think you can beat the small Chinese guy who just pushed and insulted you? You probably can, but all the other Chinese guys will attack you. You can’t fight 10 of them.

Even if you win a fight, you might get in bigger trouble. That Chinese guy you just knocked out with a left hook will go to the police, say he was attacked by a foreigner and had to pay 50k ¥ in medical fees because you broke his jaw (even if it’s not true). The police will probably find you (CCTVs are everywhere in China), they will take away your passport until the dispute is resolved.

You can tell them it was self-defense : they won’t care, you’re the foreigner.

You can tell them you want to see the alleged 50k medical fees because it’s probably bullshit : they won’t take your side, you’re the foreigner.

You think you can just run away and go back home? You won’t get your passport back until the resolution of the dispute.

You think your embassy can help you? They’re powerless, and also too lazy to do anything, unless you go to the Canadian/German embassy and pretend to be a Syrian refugee.

Your only options will be to use your connections to get out of this mess (if you have any), or try to bargain with the guy you fought with : the 50k might become 10k if you can bargain well.

Sure, it might not happen everywhere and at any time, but I have it on good faith from several long-time expats that it can happen. I am good friends with a few guys who have been in China 10+ years and they say that you really have to read the environment.

A crowded, smoky club in the major nightlife area of Shenzhen? You could get your ass beat for smacking one of those guys in the face. The clubs are owned by a combination of police and criminals.

I know a few guys who got into altercations with bouncers that didn't get beat up, but I know one guy in Shanghai who got into a fight with a bouncer in a Shanghai club and was spitting up teeth and blood. He was hospitalized for a month after that because the bouncers beat him so bad they damaged his liver and kidneys.

That said, deterrence is the best defense. If I'm with 3 of my friends, there's no way that Chinese dude would have considered coming up to us and talking shit like that. We're not rat-faced, soy boys.

Here's most likely what would have happened if soyboy had slapped that fat Chinese guy.

1. someone calls the cops or train security guards
2. both men are detained
3. the actual cops are called
4. Fat Chinese guy accuses the foreigner of starting it
5. bystanders corroborate the story
6. Soyboy is forced to pay some money or perhaps even kowtow in public

I've seen #6 go down.

I had a co-worker who was married to a white dude. Her husband walks with her to work every day and drops her off.

This Chinese guy started following them and then approached the wife (under the mistaken assumption that her Husband doesn't speak Chinese," and said: "So you like to fuck foreigners you slut?"

Her Husband grew up in Asia and speaks fluent Mandarin. He turns to the guy and says "what did you say to my wife?"

The Chinese guy turns and runs. My coworker's husband follows the guy and starts snapping pictures of the guy to report him for harassment.

The Chinese guy turns and starts yelling that my coworker's husband was harassing him. A huge crowd of Chinese guys forms and start closing in on my coworker's husband.

One guy even starts swinging at him while screaming " you think you can just come to China and bully us! Fuck you, foreigners!"

My coworker's husband starts talking them down and a police officer shows up and tries to arbitrate the situation.

He tells my coworkers husband that, as an apology, he should get on his knees and bow to the Chinese guy who called his wife a slut. He refuses and they settle on just paying some money to the cop to make those dumbfucks disperse, but that is fucking ridiculous.

Sounds unbelievable, right?
No sane country would allow this, right?

I'm just trying to tell you guys that China is not as sane as you all make it out to be. Do not get into situations with locals here unless you are 100% confident in your ability to get out.

It sucks to say it, but he would have been better off not following that Chinese guy. Even with fluent Mandarin he was almost in a situation where a mob beat down was going to happen in a nice section of Tier-1 Shenzhen. I could even take you to this spot. It's one of the better places to live in Shenzhen and my coworker's husband almost got his skull split.

I have MANY more stories like this.

I'll pm you a few if you like, but the point I want to make is this: smacking that fat dude could have had dire consequences. Just because the Chinese people didn't immediately jump up and start helping the fat guy does not mean things would not change quickly if that foreigner was a perceived aggressor. The Chinese look out for their own. It is a big part of their political rhetoric. I wouldn't call it racism. You get it from many of the older people here. I understand more Chinese than I can speak and I have been on the receiving end of a few rants from Chinese people when they thought I could not understand.

There are even a few guys on this forum who have almost been in situations like the one above. I won't say who and I won't tell their stories but shit does happen here. Do not come here smacking dudes.

Unless you are %150 certain in your mythical Bruce Lee like abilities to fight off a horde of wiry, hate_filled, rice and veggie munchers, or you have at least some semblance of self-control and are able to temper your pre-conceived ideas of what honor is and is not for the sake of self-preservation, or you have excessively deep pockets to cover the expenses of false accusations, payoffs, and medical bills, then I strongly suggest you simply strike China from the list of countries you plan to visit.

Anyone college educated in China is allergic to manual labour of any sort and as such, every part of every city will have low class workers who do the dirty work there, of which there is plenty, as Chinese people of all class levels consider it their divine destiny to litter everywhere, leave their trash on the table on McDonalds for someone else to clean up, and have their lunch delivered by delivery e-scooter every single day.

You're not going to find a place in China where you're only surrounding by well mannered suits.

You're also more likely to see a real estate agent in a suit than someone who actually has a degree of education, assuming that years of passing standardized test and never having a single original thought qualifies as education.

I once witnessed (and intervened in) a situation where a Chinese man got into a car accident with a bicycle, but the bicyclist didn't stop, so he and his friends went and physically detailed the first foreigner they could find, who happened to be riding a scooter. Fortunately, their story seemed a little sketchy to the police man who eventually arrived, as the Chinese driver's vehicle was some distance away. Traffic surveillance footage quickly proved that the Chinese man was lying, but he never faced any consequence for knowingly and falsely accusing the wrong person.

I was also accused of beating up a drunken Chinese man many years ago after saving him from getting his ass beat after he started a fight on a subway train. He went and told the police that I'd knocked his teeth out and they treated me as guilty until security footage exonerated me. If it wasn't for the security camera, I would have been fucked as I was a poor student at the time with no money (and these situations are always about money).

A few weeks ago and watched a woman twist and possible break her ankle on some stairs. I kept walking (as did everyone else), despite her painful cries, because if I'd stopped to help her, there's a 95% chance she would have falsely accused me of knocking her down the stairs.

China simply isn't a place that you can relate to unless you've personally spent some serious time here and witnessed a few situations that permanently destroy any faith you may have previous had in humanity. If you can't accept this, better to leave China to the seasoned travelers.

Reading through the thread I figured it would be a good time to post about some of my recent experiences in China in public.

So I have two kids right?

Well, walking around China with a wife and kids is a complete 180 degree experience, like when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s in America. My wife and I are constantly being grabbed in public by Chinese people wanting to see our kids. Women will walk across a building just so they can grab us to turn us around, so that they can make clicky sounds at the baby and even the slightly older kid too. They always test her Mandarin and get her to show fingers of her age. Dudes sometimes pull over on the side of the road just to talk to us. During Spring Festival time, my wife and her mother had to change my son's diaper at the train station. A crowd of 20+ gathered around to watch my son's penis. I felt ultra embarrassed about it and told some of the RVF guys about it while it was happening, but I got over it once once I realized that there was nothing to be embarrassed about.

People give up their seats on the subway and busses for us to sit down. People open doors for us. I have to pinch myself sometimes because this is not the China I remembered 5 years ago at all. Not even remotely close.

Why am I having this experience? The kids are the obvious X factor. Other factors might include being married to a woman that is not in her prime anymore, location(s) matter alot but we have gotten the same treatment in Guangzhou and Shenzhen that we got in Hunan. Would I get different treatment if my wife was still 23 years old and an 8/10? No idea. Back then that was the last time we got hated on in public in Guangzhou. Now she is a 6.5 at best without her makeup, looks like she had two kids, and is almost 30 now. Even her big rack is of no interest. I no longer see dudes checking her out like before we got married.

I would bet money that most of the guys catching heat from locals have pretty gfs and wives, probably 7+ (no kids for sure). If you have a 7+ for local Chinese guy's taste (tall, super pale, moon face, etc) watch out. They will be salty some of them.

In my wife's hometown I am a celebrity. People know about me and never met my in laws before but know exactly where we live at and that I am an American, my kid's ages, all kinds of stuff. The policemen all know me because of my relative that is one. It's pretty cool.

I guess all my rambling is to say that, being married with kids can give you a much different experience in China. They don't seem to look at you as a competitor anymore, but someone who values their culture and loves it there enough to settle down in it. If you really think about it, Chinese men in China do not even trust other Chinese men that do not have kids by a certain age (30 basically), just in business alone. In their minds, have a wife, kids, do man stuff in your free time. If that means going to the xiaojie place 2 times a year, smoke and drink with the other men once a year or even regularly, that's regular dude stuff to them. They know you aren't a weirdo if you are like that. It's social proof.

If you are married and have no kids, Chinese men look down on that shit big time. They think you either don't value the woman, you are disrespecting your own parents, your penis is broken, you are not masculine or a real man, you have no values, you do not care about your future, or you might be running a scam or games. If you get a chance to observe older Chinese couples that had no kids, they usually have much less friends than the ones that do.

Also think about the men that get into fights in public. How old are they typically and are they married with kids? In my experience, usually not. Men that are, usually get into fights or disputes at home and/or with relatives, not people outside the house. Why don't younger men attack older married men as much? Think about it. If you are Chinese and attacking another one, who do you think has more guanxi on average than you might? Older men. What if his wife's dad is the local police chief or high ranking officer? You are fucked if you punch him. Young dudes are not that stupid. They know that talking shit to you has little to no consequences at all, because your average laowai has zero guanxi.

Chinese is not multicultural. Stop applying Western standards to China. If you said "multiculturalism" to a Chinese person They would have no clue what you are talking about. Multiculturalism is not and will not ever be a Chinese value. Minorities conform to the majority in China, not the other way around.

One big reason why many guys often feel jealous in China is that their society has set unrealistic standards (house, car and kids) when they will never be able to afford that. If you want to own a nice apartment in a Tier-1 Chinese city you would need to be a millionaire if you don't want to spend the rest of your paying down the mortgage. This is something the Chinese government has created, not foreigners. Naturally, when a man who is powerless to do something finds himself in a position where he can take out his frustration on a defenseless person he may do that. This is why, I think, many Chinese people pick fights with foreigners. Deep down they know they are powerless to ever change anything In China, but they do know that they can fight a foreigner, accuse a foreigner or blackmail a foreigner and get away with it scott-free.

Truthfully, they should be angry at their government but if you say that to a local, they'll have a meltdown since it goes against 60+ years of massive brainwashing.
