Quote:Swedish Government On Verge Of Collapse After Admitting 'Accidental Leak' Of Entire Nation's Info
Sweden’s government is being quietly rocked by a major scandal. So far the market has paid it little regard, but, as Citi warns, it may soon escalate...
Sweden appears to have accidentally leaked the details of almost all of its citizens. And now it's getting worse as the leak happened in 2015, but only emerged last week. As The Indepedent reports,
Quote: The leak allowed unvetted IT workers in other countries to see the details of people registered in Swedish government and police databases.
It happened after the government looked to outsource data held by the Transport Agency, but did so in a way that allowed that information to be available to almost anyone, critics have claimed.
The opposition is seeking to boot out the ministers of infrastructure, defence and the interior – Anna Johansson, Peter Hultqvist and Anders Ygeman, respectively – for their role in outsourcing IT-services for the Swedish Transport Agency in 2015.
Prime Minister Stefan Lofven admitted Monday his country and its citizens were exposed to risks by potential leaks as a result of the contract.
Quote:"This is a disaster," Swedish PM Lofven said. "This has exposed Sweden and Swedish citizens to risks."
The minority government has said that contract process – won by IBM Sweden – was speeded up, bypassing some laws and internal procedures in a manner that may have led to people abroad, handling servers with sensitive materials.
As Reuters reports, the scandal has raised questions about the way it has been handled within the government. The security police informed the Justice Ministry in late 2015 but Lofven said he only found out about it early this year.
Quote:Lofven said Anna Johansson, minister of infrastructure and responsible for the Transport Agency, had not passed information on to him.
Johansson on Sunday in turn blamed one of her former state secretaries for not informing her about the scandal.
"I wish I had been informed earlier," Lofven said while adding he had no plans to fire any ministers. "I have full confidence in them (ministers) until I say otherwise."
However, as The Independent notes, the centre right opposition Alliance, comprising the Moderate, Centre, Liberal and Christian Democrat parties, has taken aim at Lofven's cabinet...
Quote: "It is obvious (they) have neglected their responsibility. They have not taken action to protect Sweden's safety", Centre party leader Annie Loof told a news conference.
Parliament is in recess but the opposition parties will submit a request to the speaker to summon legislators for a vote within 10 days.
If the opposition gets a majority the ministers will have to resign, a likely outcome as the nationalist Sweden Democrats have said they will support a vote of no-confidence.
Quote: "There are only two alternatives, either a new election or he himself (Lofven) resigns," Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Akesson said.
"It feels like it's possible, yes," Anna Kinberg Batra, leader of the Moderates said.
As Citi notes, SEK has strengthened so far this week and no dramatic headlines seem to be impacting the currency yet, but some political noise may be on the way.
IBM Sweden says it never comments on relations with clients. The government said it had no comment pending a later statement, which Swedish Prime Minister Lofven just announced that he will hold a press conference on July 27th at 10am CET.
Finally we wonder how long before Sweden blames Russia for leaking this 2-year-old secret.

RE: Largest tech blunder in history? Swedish governement exposes every citizens info.
Entire nation's info? That's a retarded click-bait title if I ever saw one and typical of zero hedge's current level of reporting. It doesn't even make sense. The data exposed, which is nowhere near as "all" encompassing and while damaging, is not the major issue here but the cover-up of it. That's what's bringing the current Social Democrat government down.
With that said, good riddance to the current government. When they managed to "win" the latest election by a hair to the point they had to seek support from the left and green party I said something to the effect on this very forum that I was actually somewhat glad. Glad because the people on occasion need to be reminded of their incompetence and lack of savvy in actually managing a nation.
I'm livid that their political appointments have caused this embarrassment but I'm watching in glee how the party is crashing and burning. We thank them for their service and actual good job they performed during much of the earlier part of the last century, but time has passed them several times over now and it's time to hand over the reigns to the (likely) right-nationalist coalition.

RE: Largest tech blunder in history? Swedish governement exposes every citizens info.
These kind of things become increasingly common as the public sector grows. Hiring and firing is not done on merit, sometimes even worse in forms of affirmative action for women and other minorities and eventually incompetence permeates every position.
RE: Largest tech blunder in history? Swedish governement exposes every citizens info.
2 MPs stepping down voluntarily, the opposition will raise a vote of no confidence on a third. No new election but the Social Democrats have been seriously crippled until the regular election next year.

This is actually pretty serious. The data leaked includes:
-Identities of all those in Witness Protection
-Identities of all the Swedish security services, including special forces AND THEIR SPIES
-Locations of all military equipment
-Routes for all money transportation
This data has been freely available for 10 months. Lol.
RE: Largest tech blunder in history? Swedish governement exposes every citizens info.
Incredible.
All so these penny-pinching idiots can save a few bucks off-shoring their IT in order to better afford their beloved rapefugees.
Maybe some of the affected Swedes will start to take the red-pill when they realise that the amount of refugees that arrived in the last five minutes will eat up the costs saved by their government putting their own irretrievable information in the hands of unqualified, unvetted and unaccountable foreigners.

Yes, it is serious.
A lot of "serious" bad things are happening in the venerated Nordic countries. They've reached a point where decades of non-merit based hiring comes back to haunt them. Think Detroit but slower, because Nordics are smarter and less corrupt. Eventually the result is the same. The public sector always breeds nepotism and incompetence and will eventually always fail.
RE: Largest tech blunder in history? Swedish governement exposes every citizens info.
Oy vey I imagine what would have happened if this happened in the South of Europe, we'd be called lazy, sloppy and incompetent (I do agree public workers in the vast majority of countries are like this), and it would not be a surprise at all and everyone would be patronizing. Since it was in good ol' Sweden everything is fine. Like essentially being internally colonized by outsiders is fine.
"Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it. It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin. Real love involves real hatred: whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the sellers from temples has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth."

Regular tourettes over everything Swedish still exists I see. As fast as something concerns the country that would barely register elsewhere it's like some people abandon all critical thought and just vent.

^ If the leak isn't the issue, then why did the SD's try to cover it up? You're not making sense, Vicious. It had to have been very bad and very serious, otherwise why cover it up?

Vicious, no need to take it personally, the same happened in Denmark. The Danish department of health sent an un-encrypted disc with healthcare data of 1 million people (including politicians) in the mail and it got delivered - by mistake, by the incompentent mail - to the Chinese embassy, who were kind enough to mail it back.
Sweden is probably the most efficient and most productive of the Scandinavian countries, no other country would have been able to survive the absurdities of such politics and still remain functional. It's a testament to the Swedish people that they can continue on despite the enormous burden of suicidal politics.
Scandinavians are like the old workhorse in Animal Farm. Every time the pigs, aka the inner party, fuck things up, the horse proclaims "long live the socialist revolution, just have to work a bit harder". Which he did, until one day the other animals found the horse dead at the plough. That too will happen eventually in Scandinavia.

I'm not sure if Nordic people understand irony but you say this isn't serious because [some important person] says so but these same important people then go on to say there is no rape, violence, crime epidemic in Sweden.
Which is it?
Its either a serious breech of data protection and personal safety or it isn't.
Does Sweden have a rape, crime and violence epidemic or doesn't it?

The old workhorse on Animal Farm was sent to the glue factory, and I think the pigs spent the money on booze and partying in the master's former house.
Definitely a metaphor of what's likely to happen to the Swedes.

Since when is it news that politicians are reluctant to take responsibility? Had the SDs revealed it the second it came up it then yes it would have been considered "very bad and serious" but definitely not resulting in 2 MP's leaving. They have simply been arrogant and taking their power given by the people for granted. Not exactly an uncommon trait among politicians anywhere.
Check the local reporting yourself. Very little is even focusing on the leak. The world isn't so binary that this it can either only be a non-issue or "the largest tech blunder in history".

You're confused if you think I'm defending the Social Democrats. I'd see them go at the drop of a hat.
I however loathe intellectual laziness. Just reposting sensational posts from blogs with zero integrity and honesty without taking in multiple sources is a prime example of that. Still this seems to be the MO for otherwise smart people as soon as the issue is Sweden. Just look at the stuff posted. Why would the equivalent of the DMV even have classified info on spies?

You and I both know that Swedish cities, even the worst, are still far safer and liveable than an average American inner city, but that doesn't mean there's a need to defend these socialist and feminist loons eh?
Captain Sweden has become something of a joke on the internet. People outside Sweden don't quite seem to get that Sweden is most likely still a far superior country to where they are from. In addition, Sweden politically might be extremely pc, marxist, feminist, but the people don't act like it. Swedish women are far more feminine than American on average for example.
