Not sure what to think of the first instalment.

Has elements of Twin Peaks, but felt more like Lost Highway/Mulholland Drive. Maybe it's impossible for Lynch to go back stylistically to how Twin Peaks was, due to it being so long ago and developing a different tonality to his story telling, or maybe he's cognisant of not going back to that style and giving it a modern twist.

One thing I definitely can't jive with is the use of digital format. No warmth whatsoever. Could've certainly assisted in softening Sheryl Lee's sun damaged neckline 25 years on in the black lodge.

Old cameras definitely played a major role. It is this "warmth" you describe that is immediately noticeable when comparing 1990s TP and TP now. In the 90s, it was like whole series was on some sort of sepia filter or something similar and thus it produced different effect on the viewer. Twin Peaks looked like idyllic small town. Now its simply a small town.

Btw, arm and Bob are weird as ever.

I watched 4 episodes. Weird shit is happening but at least I see now the actual plotlines. I have some theories about the events but I will not spoil here for others.

So I've now gone through 4 episodes and... what the fuck is happening?

The original Twin Peaks was a cheerfully odd murder mystery that segued into the supernatural. This new show is a dark, violent acid trip.

I'm not complaining... yet. The old Coop really needs to get back though for my interest to hold.

Exactly, old cameras and mellow feel had disappeared and this is a almost pure horror TV series. But actually I like it, this new series will deal heavily with "blue rose" themes.
There are couple of things I don't understand yet, but I won't mention them here in order to not spoil those who haven't watched.

I agree with the general tone of the discussion here- the new iteration of "Twin Peaks" is much more... I don't know, science fiction-y and supernatural in its darkness, compared to the first season of the original show, which was more like an 'idyllic-town-with-some-creepy-bad-guys' crime plot similar to "Blue Velvet." Like people here have said, the new shows are much more like "Mulholland Drive" or even "Eraserhead" (especially Cooper's journey out of the black lodge). I suspect what's happening is that Lynch is going to run with the creepier horror/ sci-fi elements briefly glimpsed in season 2 of the original series.

At first this would seem to be a risky strategy. As a huge fan from back in the day (it was my one 'appointment television" show) I was sorely disappointed by the second season, as were most fans. However, with Laura Palmer's murder more or less 'solved' (as solved as something can be in Twin Peaks with all the odd behaviors and non sequiturs) I think the tie in for the new season had to be the Garland Briggs "blue rose" stuff. This time, thanks to modern special effects, they can really amp it up and more blatantly show things on the screen rather than inferring them.

It's weird as fuck, but in my opinion, has worked so far. The independent stories (which I assume will intersect) are interesting except for one or two misfires (I'm not sure I care for Ben and Jerry serving as comic relief, as they were once quite menacing, and what the hell was that scene between Michael Cera and Robert Forster??), so I'm definitely on board to see what the hell Lynch comes up with next, which is the best criticism you can make about a TV show.

And I sneakingly suspect that it is, in fact, about the bunny

Ben and Jerry will probably have its own plotline. What about dr J and his showels, also probably a comedic plotline. Wally and Frank Truman have some kind of weird history and its apparent that Frank doesn't like too much Wally.

Do you think that businessman with couple of sentences and the apartment on top of building (you know what I mean) in NYC are connected?

I was a huge fan of the original and also watched all of David Lynch's work.

Like was mentioned before, this doesn't have the atmosphere of the series, it's much more similar to his other work.

However I absolutely love the whole black lodge thing. The scene at the beginning of episode 3 (the first 30 minutes roughly) is simply spectacular.

Some other scenes though are really tasteless with no redeeming qualities what so ever, the sheriff station scenes come to mind, and the casino scenes.

In other words.. it's David Lynch at his best and it his worst. Overall I'm looking forward to the coming episodes.

I agree, I'm sure we will be seeing more of the old Ben Horne at some point (and what ever happened to One Eye Jacks?), and I certainly hope the stories are all connected.

I wasn't too concerned about Dr. Jacoby yet. Yes, the shovel thing was weird in sort of a comic relief way, but the camera kept focusing on on they pulley thing of his, with the pedals, so I'm guessing that might be important in the near future.

I read "Secret History of Twin Peaks" before the new series started, so I can say expect to see UFOs/aliens along with the supernatural/occult stuff.

I really liked seeing Bobby again. But I think it's ominous foreshadowing that the 'bad" kid is a cop now, considering that in the movie FWWM we saw him shoot and kill a crooked cop.

I didn't LOVE everything about the first four hours, but I'm enjoying the hell out of it. After all, I certainly didn't love all of the original series either. It got pretty bad in the second season.

I just think it's a damn shame they waited so long to film it. Look at the actors that have died over the years: The old waiter, the mayor and his brother, the guy that plays Pete Martell, the guy that plays Briggs, David Bowie (Agent Jeffries.) And since the show came back, Log Lady, Albert, Dr. Hayward, and the guy that played Renault all died.

It was nice that Log Lady and Albert filmed their scenes though. Log Lady was clearly on death's door. And supposedly Miguel Ferrer was in rough shape the last few years too.

I didn't like that the Man From Another Place is a dumb looking tree now, just cause he and Lynch had a falling out. That was also a shame.

Didn't know actor playing Albert died. Do you know has he filmed all his scenes? I don't get what is with Bob. As far as I understand doppelganger is evil duplicate, but why did we see in the last season Bob in the mirror when doppelganger looks at it?

Wow- I was aware that Albert and Log Lady died, but I didn't know about all the others :-(.

That might also be contributing to the different feel of this series- not simply that those characters aren't around anymore, but that Lynch and Frost by necessity have to come up with new "Twin Peaks"-like storylines with entirely new people. So far I think I would say they are pulling it off successfully.

Speaking of new people, and I apologize if I'm a little slow here, but does anyone know why the actor who played sheriff Truman didn't sign on?

Also forgot to mention that Frank Silva (BOB) was probably the first cast member to die, back in the 90s, so unless it's in flashbacks, we won't be seeing his utterly terrifying visage again.

The book gave some spoilers on what happened in that bank blast from the season two finale, but I won't post them here cause I'm sure it'll get brought up in the show.

And yes, I think Miguel Ferrer (Albert) filmed all his scenes cause this was all shot about a year ago and he just died about two months ago.

I was aware that Frank Silva had passed away too because it wasn't long after the first series ended its run, but honestly had no idea about Don Davis, whose character I would have expected to play a role in the new series (though I think we did see his image once, if I'm not mistaken, right?).

And that sucks about Sheriff Truman. As a fan I can't comprehend not wanting to come out of retirement for a new "Twin Peaks", but maybe to an actor with large enough savings, it would have been just another job.

Also, at the end of the 2 hour premiere, you may have noticed a disgusting fat guy tending bar at the Roadhouse. It was the same actor that played Jacgues Renault. But Leland killed Jacgues Renault in the hospital! Well, according to the credits, he's Jean-Michel Renault in the new series, so it's another Renault brother. Probably only a cameo for that guy, but at least he's playing a different character.

It's awesome seeing all the old cast members again but god, it's depressing seeing how old they all are now.

Yeah? I thought my mind is playing tricks on me with Renault actor. Yes, it was CGI head of major Briggs in that "outer realm".
I am just interested if we will see some new info dug up that Briggs made when he was alive. You all probably know that he was one of the personnel in the Project Bluebook and he probably collected for military loads of info, together with Windom Earle. So, some new things that could give better insight into the lore of the series.

I am very curious also to get answer about glass box.

Yes! I forgot that Jaques was killed by Leland! He was smothered, right? That's actually a relief- I thought the actor had died.

It really is depressing to hear about deaths in the cast, and a little disconcerting to see how old some people look. The Log Lady looked terrible, obviously, but I didn't mind it too much since I knew she had died and in a way it was comforting to see her, even in a brief appearance. But Albert looks gaunt and weak, which makes some of his scenes hard to watch. He used to be bitter, cynical and condescending- I remember after complaining that he didn't have enough time with Laura's body for proper forensics, he goes off on a big tirade about the locals and finishes it off with "please return to your porch rockers and resume whittling".

Ben, Jerry, and Laura have not exactly aged gracefully, and I was even a little disturbed to see Bobby with grey hair.

Yeah I've seen recent pictures of her- what a fucking disaster.

I used to LOVE the Twin Peaks women. Lara Flynn Boyle was amazing (and looked nothing like any girl I went to high school with), Sherilyn Fenn was strikingly beautiful in a 1950s movie starlet sort of way, and although she was probably the least popular, I found Madchen Amick to be the sexiest of all (loved that petite little body). Even Peggy Lipton, who had to have been in her late 40s, looked great.

I'm not looking forward to the moment when we first see them in the new series

Sadly, the last of the original Twin Peaks females to be bangable rapidly approaches the wall.



At 42 Alicia Witt is still looking OK, but a few years has definitely made a difference.




The comparison is slightly unfair as she was not actually legal when she appeared on the show.

I'm going to watch the 4th hour of the new series tonight. I was starting to worry that the 3rd hour was going to be a whole hour of backwards talking and that weird stop-motion stuff. I love the Black Lodge but that would've been a bit much for me.

I'm liking it so far. I think the scene with the arm is almost Eraserhead level disturbing. Premium network is definitely a better home for the show; it seems that there aren't any limits on the creativity or abstraction.

Currently sharing stirfry's suspicion that it is indeed about the bunny.
