Hey y'all, I've been thinking of getting a tattoo to cover up a scar on my back.

It got me thinking, what countries exist where having a tat can be a serious turn off or social taboo?

In some countries tattoos aren't so much a taboo as they are a sign of being lower class, Colombia for example although that seems to be changing as some of my upper class friends there are getting small tats but nothing like a full or even half sleeve. I'm not a big fan of tattoos even though I have a huge shitty one on my arm that I got 15 years ago, I'm 4 procedures into the long, expensive and painful process of having it removed by laser.

Also tattoo styles and motifs can be indicative of certain social classes, cliques or status for those who are tuned to such things...

Just rock the scar, man. If there isn't an interesting story behind it you can even make one up.

Way more interesting than some tattoo you may regret later in life.

Here in Argentina there is the trend to got those stupid full-sleve tatoos. The daughter of a TV celebrity (who is very mentally ill in my opinion) have some troath tatoos. Totally degenerate.

in south korea they are illegal. Very frowned upon there as well.

Japan, though I think they expect a lot of foreigners to have them.

Taiwan isn't as bad as Japan but it's still mostly a sign of being lower class.

Actually, I'd say in most countries tattoos do carry a low-class connotation.

+1 to japan, a friend who has one got kicked out of more than one gym for having them. Most swimming pools are also off limits. Not being allowed inside onsens is a big bummer, they are one of the most unique things to do in japan.

Not sure about the situation in S. Korea, but again one of my favorite thing to do there are the bath houses/ korean saunas and I don't think they will be very happy about tatoos in there.

In Europe young people are really into tatoos, but for many people of my parents generation (including my mum) tatoos are for low class/blue colar/uneducated brutes.

I'm in South Korea now. Tattoos are definitely becoming a lot more accepted and common nowadays. I have been to one public bath where they the rules claimed tattoos were prohibited but there were a few guys wandering around with them anyway.

I went to the pool with a foreigner friend and he couldn't get in because of a very small tattoo on the wrist.

I cringe to think what would happen if I ever go to a bath house/pool in S.Korea or Japan then...
(I wouldnt say my tats are immediately visible but they are not exactly discreet either)

Japan +1. Anyway most tattoos are ugly, and unless you belong to a gang or have a very special meaning for a tattoo, dragons / sleeves / chains / other "body drawing" isn't attractive IMO.

China is also anti-tattoo. There is a budding tattoo culture but the middle-class and upper middle-class still look down on that stuff.

African countries. In my experience African girls are very skeptical about tats, piercings, and even beards. I've also found that most African girls who have tattoos are either degenerate sluts, outright hoes, or a bit damaged.

Japan - if you have visible tattoos people will think you are a gangster/yakuza member, and you won't be allowed to go to gyms or pools.

How do Japanese see a gaijin with tats? I assume there is still a stigma associated with American sailors?
