RE: LASIK thread
Had both eyes done in Jan '15.

Only chronic issue is dryness (which I had before), requiring daily use of lubricant, but otherwise intact vision with no residual effects.

As previously stated, corrective lenses will eventually be needed, but for the forseeable future it's a great investment.

It is worth repeating how risky this procedure is.
Attached is a relevant white paper on lasik.

I bet you didn't "require daily use of lubricant" prior to Lasik.

RE: LASIK thread
I got both my eyes done with LASIK. Couldn't be happier with the results. Honestly one of the BEST decisions I ever made. Very little in the way of side effects except night vision a little worse and a little sensitivity in my right eye.

Key things are:
1) Don't wear contacts for several years before getting it done, this will minimize risks and give you the highest probability of a successful procedure
2) Get it done at the best place possible (I went with Kraff in Chicago who is supposed to be one of the best in the country, I'm sure there are great people in most major cities but I'd be wary of getting it done outside of tier 1 cities in developed nations)
3) Your eyes do get more sensitive afterwards so just have to be careful, cut down on screen time

RE: LASIK thread
I talked to my eye doctor today. I told him about the information presented here that Lasik was dangerous. He said that the procedures have improved and that most of the complaints are from the older procedure which is being phased out. He also said his assistant has had Lasik. My eye doctor makes out prescriptions for contacts and glasses, and has no financial interest in telling me that. I was wondering what others think. Having surgery on your eyes seems risky.

Eye doctors have a financial insterest - people need reading glasses after lasik, lasek, they need scleral lenses, etc. They also might have referral kickbacks.

And the procedures did not improve much; the bladeless, femto method has its own complications.

The LASIK industry markets this technology under a variety of names and descriptions. Here are a few: IntraLase, IntraLASIK, femtosecond LASIK, blade-free LASIK, all-laser LASIK, bladeless LASIK, and iLASIK when combined with VISX custom LASIK.

Some of the reported complications of femtosecond lasers are opaque bubble layer, corrugated corneal stromal bed, extreme light sensitivity, partial flaps, rainbow glare, torn flap, vertical gas breakthrough, epithelial ingrowth, flap necrosis, diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK), corneal perforation, incomplete flap, decentered flaps, small flaps, slipped flaps, flap folds, traumatic flap dislocation, gas bubbles in the anterior chamber, optic nerve damage, flap tears, haze, macular hemorrhage, infection, stromal cell necrosis, inflammation, keratocyte cell death, corneal nerve damage, goblet cell reduction, and interface particles.

RE: LASIK thread
I'm currently on the fence between LASIK and contacts. Have been wearing the same pair of glasses since 2012 (astigmatism and short sightedness). Contacts sees to be a big responsibility. I also can't decide whether I look better with glasses or without them. Girls sometimes tell me I've got beautiful eyes, buy I've got a big nose too and glasses make it look a little smaller.

Don't fucking do it, man. It's not worth the risks.

This thread should probably be moved to the lifestyle section.

Anyway, just got quoted $3850 for both eyes with a lifetime warranty covering any followup procedures. Seriously considering.

RE: LASIK thread
I did it about a year ago or so, never had dryness, now I do, so I have to use drops every day when I wake up, and several times a day.

It's much better than having to wear glasses that fog up in the rain, fall off my face when I'm sweating, prevent me from swimming with good vision, and put me at risk of a major issue if I were to lose them while traveling in Asia, for example.

Also, having sex is better now, I don't have to think, "am I going for round 4, or am I done, so let me put away the glasses/take out the contacts now..." That always kind of sucked, I couldn't just lay there in bed in peace without having to make that decision. It's a little thing, but now that I don't have to do that, it's great, more peace of mind, just in general.

I would do it again.

Got braces also, about the same price for both, around 5k braces, 5k lasik (lots of eye drops for life now, and they're not cheap, price will easily go over 5k eventually, but glasses aren't cheap either).

I would do both again, I'm more confident and more handsome, I wish I'd done both sooner. I also never noticed other people's crooked teeth until after I got braces. This made me realize that girls I talked to, a large portion of which had had braces, must have noticed my teeth. This had to have cost me socially.

I'd say investing in yourself is great, do it if you can, and if you can't, find a way.

RE: LASIK thread
LASIK does not fix your vision. LASIK uses a flap in your eye to move the focal plane, effectively acting like "permanent contacts."

What's the problem with that? Your vision changes. If your vision changes 1D in either direction, you'll need glasses...ON TOP of your LASIK.

LASIK is forever. There is no undoing the flap in your eye.

The side effects are terrible, and the likelihood is much more than reported.

I highly suggest looking into alternatives beforehand.

Jake is a psycho but has great points (he was -5D and now has 20/20 vision):

Here's Cliff giving a basic introduction (he was -3D and is now 20/30):

Wearing glasses isn't that bad. Use it as motivation to improve your eyesight the way God intended.

RE: LASIK thread
Yeah, when I wear glasses unless if they are the huge goofy looking lenses it feels like I'm in tunnel vision and am disconnected from anything thats not right in front of me. . . no peripheral at all and feel antisocial with them on. Braces is the other thing I'm considering. Stinks that only now at 31 do I have the money I wish I had years ago to spend on stuff like this. But I don't want to be 33 and wish I got them both done 2 years ago.

Can you post a review about his book, or at least talk about how his methods have helped you personally? I currently wear glasses and I'm on the fence about LASIK but I'm scared of trying "natural" methods since most of 'em don't work and they're super risky.

Do it, man, I started the braces at like 33, two years ago, and they should be coming off in a few months. The time flies by.

So, when I left Asia two years ago, as I got on that plane to America, I promised myself I'd return with 3 things, perfect vision, perfect teeth, and a 1k monthly surplus while living a nice lifestyle in Cebu, without having to work. My vision is perfect now, my teeth will be done in a few months, and I've run my numbers and I'm at a $800 monthly surplus without having to work right now, if living in Cebu. So I've got $200 more to go to reach my goal. If I chose to live in Davao instead, I'd be at the +1k mark already, since the cost of living there is lower, but basically, in 6 months when my braces come off, I'll have accomplished all three things and will be able to live a life that is basically a fantasy for most men. I may stay a year or two longer in the U.S. or I may not, but just having that option to bounce is incredible.

That would be my advice, spend those two years or so that you'll be wearing braces focusing on big areas of your life to improve on, that way when they come off, you're good to go.

No, the regular metal ones, I really don't mind the look, they make me look even younger than I already look, and they're a good conversation starter when I meet girls with braces.

Girls with braces are a +1 for me, no shame, haha.

Ha, same here. Ok, I'll have to check with my dentist, would prefer them to be hidden, but if using metal means I get them off earlier than maybe it would be worth it.

Yeah, that was the reasoning my dentist gave, but anyways, no one really cares, like in your head you might think, "what will people think?" but the reality is people don't think about much more than themselves most of the time.

I did PRK a month ago for $1600 in the USA. I have perfect distance vision now, still hard to read up close until I'm fully recovered. I was driving 3 days after surgery.

I go through a lot of eye drops but mostly at night.

I had LASIK about 4 weeks ago now cost me $2000 plus I payed an extra $400 for a lifetime warranty - if my vision detoreorates they will fix it again for free so long as I keep up with annual checkups.

My distance is not perfect yet. My last check up doctor said I still had some swelling and vision should sharpen up more as it goes down. I'm about 20/25 right now and my close up vision is great. Was hard to focus up close for the first week or so. I drove the next day after surgery.

Sorry for repeating the warning on lasik, but anyone willing to have Lasik should do himself a favor and watch a new Dutch documentary (with English subtitles) on lasikcomplications.com.
It's on top of the page. It's pretty scary.
I referred some people to the site, and I was amazed everybody ignored it and were ready to roll the dice with their only pair of eyes.

I think the fact that LASIK has an extremely high success rate with a relatively low risk for failure or any long term side effects (provided you take proper care after the procedure) that people are perfectly in their own right to roll those dice to change their life for the better.

I now know close to a dozen people who have gotten LASIK surgery and have absolutely no issues. A handful of that dozen got it done 10+ years ago and a few of them have barely had any vision deterioration.
