Hey everyone,

I am planning my first trip to SEA, and it will be my first time anywhere besides US, Europe, and Iran. I read about 30 pages of this thread, mainly at the beginning, and have a sense of what I need to do. I still have questions though.

My SEA trip will be, in this order:

Manila- 1 week arriving in early June
Bangkok- 2 weeks
Kuala Lumpur- 2 weeks
Jakarta- 2 weeks
Ho Chi Minh City- 2 weeks

Then back to the US to go to school.

The only place where I won't be solo is BKK. My Iranian cousin that speaks 0 English and looks to the untrained eye like a very tall Indian guy will be joining me (I will basically be treating his ass).

Based on what I've read I think I have decided to get a place within walking distance to Route 66 and RCA and all that.

Can any of you experts answer some questions for me so that I get the most out of my two weeks, reps will definitely be given.

1. Are Route 66 and RCA and the clubs/bars in those areas still considered the best bet for a farang like me to try to SNL? People generally think I look Italian, Greek, Lebanese or Turkish. I'm 6'2'' and a bit out of shape now but losing weight quickly. Nonetheless I have a lot of muscle on my body.

2. Is living very close to Route 66 and RCA a good idea if I intend to do online, day, and night game?

3. When I arrive at the airport how much money should I change to the baht, excluding housing which I will airbnb in advance? I intend to go to a gym 4 days a week for the two weeks I'm there. I will need money for transportation. I will eat one small meal of chicken a day and cover my cousins food. I'll bring a couple of bottles of liquor with me and I don't drink much if at all when I go out, but I'll also be covering my cousin.

4. Is BKK a good place to get custom clothes? Like if I buy some blazers and shirts and get them tailor fitted would I get quality that would be eye catching in Los Angeles (where I will be after trip for school)?

5. I've never used uber and would rather not, but is it advantageous over taxis or motor bikes? I'm more concerned with safety and price than having a great ride to and from places.

6. Is there anything you guys would say I need to learn about the language that is necessary or will get me further? I'm visiting five countries and have no experience with SEA or EA languages, so I won't be able to learn all that much.

7. Is holding my hands together and slightly bowing as in the religious movement a corny thing to do to Thais (not talking about women here)? Is it a sign of respect or a bit comical for a Western guy to be doing that?

8. I want as many notches as possible and I will try to do online, day, and night game. I really only want to bring a phone and clothes on my trip. Will tinder be good to pipeline with and use while I'm there? I have tinder plus and am familiar with the system so I'd prefer that over anything else, but am I missing out by not using Thai Friendly or Paktor?

Don't exchange money at the airport, other than maybe 500 baht for a taxi to your hotel/apartment. The exchange rates are far better elsewhere, especially the Super Rich stalls. There's one at MBK shopping mall.

I stayed right next to RCA for a week in January and regretted the decision to do so. There is nothing happening during the day time in that area, and the nightlife was dead other than Friday and Saturday night. You also have to catch a taxi everywhere and have no access to the sky-train. I would stay in a livelier area in Sukhumvit.

As far as Route 66 and Onyx, the two main clubs on RCA, being the best places to pull for foreigners, I'm honestly not sure about that anymore. The place was flooded with white guys and Koreans when I went and the bitch shields of the quality girls seem to have increased in the past couple of years. That being said, you can still quite easily pull farang hunters at Route 66, but I doubt you'll get anything above a 6. Don't even bother with ONYX. The girls that frequent that place, although hot, stick with their own and dislike invasions of foreigners. There's also a 500 baht entrance fee each night for non-Thais. I'll probably get hated on for this but I've always had the best time and had the best luck on Khao San Road, but check out the clubs in Sukhumvit as well. Maybe do Khao San/Sukhumvit on weekdays and Route 66 or Thonglor on weekends.

If you're into day game, I would stay somewhere close to both a shopping mall and the Sky train. As long as you're close to the sky train, you'll be able to jump on and daygame pretty much anywhere you want. Somewhere near Terminal 21 in Asoke would be ideal for a combination of day game and nightlife, as you have the mall, Sky train and Sukhumvit 11, as well as a few other bars/clubs in Sukhumvit close-by. You're also within a moderate cab ride to Thonglor and RCA. If you want a more local experience though, you'll need to move further out to Ekkemai, On Nut etc, but there's a reason more foreigners stay in lower sukhumvit. It's convenient.

Hotel Clover Asoke, Grand Centre Point Terminal 21, and Adelphi Suites are all good hotel choices in that area if you don't smoke (if you smoke, buy Quomem from the Boots in T21 and quit!). Terminal 21 is great for hanging out, eating (meal for a dollar at Pier 21), day gaming, and dates; stay at GCP and you don't even need to go outside the building to get back to your room. Adelphi is a bit further from the T21 action but is closer to Soi 11 where the normal (i.e. non-p4p) night life is in that area (e.g. The Australian Bar).

So RagnarLothbrok PMed me and gave me great advice about all my questions. Based on what he said and what you have said here I did some research. It looks like my best bet is going to be a place within walking distance to Terminal 21. Actually what I'm noticing with my SEA destinations in general is that being near a good mall in a nice area is one of the best bets because mainly you can go on dates there and nightlife is also generally close.

I looked into what you posted and what you have said would definitely be ideal. The thing is though that despite me spending a lot of cash on this trip, I'm still on a budget. Now I'm not talking hippie backpacker budget, but I'm saying my best bet is a cheaper airbnb in an ideal area. Those hotels are way out of my range unless I was only visiting BKK and for a couple of weeks at that.

One of my big concerns is getting in enough time in KL and Jakarta. The reason is because I have had very little chance to meet people from those countries, and in the case of Malaysia I don't think I've ever met a single person from there. I want to do my best to ensure the flag in both countries. Manila and BKK sound like easy mode so I'm not as worried, and HCMC might be relatively difficult but if I don't succeed in getting the flag I will run into many Vietnamese in the two cities that I live in/frequent in the US.

I definitely think I might be missing out by not hitting beach towns, but I don't have the knowledge on where to go, am prioritizing getting the flags from these countries, and wouldn't want to spend more money than I need to.

If you can recommend me the best beach options in these countries in this thread of by PM and how much they cost/transportation I'd be very greatful, rep you, and possibly change my plans. The only thing is I want to have all my flights and airbnbs booked by Friday or so.

WHAT? Suvarnabhumi (BKK) airport is a great place for an international arrival to exchange (if you know where to go). While on the subject, be careful taking advice from guys who don't live here, especially Adrenaline (BK is played out), who constantly gives misleading info. Go to the lower level of the airport where the entrance to the Rail Link (Metro) to the city is. There you will find 7 or 8 exchange booths. Check the boards for the best exchange. Value+ usually matches the best rate, has two booths and is rarely busy. There are two different Super Rich exchange booths at the airport and throughout the city; Super Rich orange and Super Rich green. Super Rich green usually gives the better exchange. I'm flying from my home in Northern Thailand on Sunday for a conference in BK and will land in (BKK) instead of (DMK), just to exchange $U.S dollars that I brought back from Phnom Penh.

Many decent areas to stay, but if it will fit your budget, stay near Asoke. Easy access to bars and clubs in Thong Lor, Ekkamai, Sukhumvit and even Ratchada if you want a more downscale local scene. This is also a very good area for daytime shopping, and eating plus the Sukhumvit BTS line and the MRT are right at your doorstep and meet ups with online girls will be easy.

The baht is a fully convertible currency, so if you exchange too much you can exchange it back to U.S with a very small penalty. Use the exchange houses I mentioned above and how much cash you bring is a personal choice. Since you are an American, the best approach may be to open a Charles Schwab acct or similar that refunds any ATM fees and allows you to carry less cash while travelling within SEA.

4. Is BKK a good place to get custom clothes?
It is, but don't ask me where; it has been three years since I had any tailoring done in BK and the price was higher than I pay in CM these days.

5. I've never used uber and would rather not, but is it advantageous over taxis or motor bikes? I'm more concerned with safety and price than having a great ride to and from places.
Uber is very good and Grab Car may even be better. Add the apps, you may need them. I have been saved twice by Uber when caught down a local soi in Ekkamai in a torrential downpour.

I'm conversational in Thai and it does help, but I live here. I found it difficult to learn, but others pick it up easier. At the end of the day you will be in BK for 2 weeks and gone, so other than learning a few words, I wouldn't worry about it that much.

Nothing wrong with using a 'wai' to greet someone as a foreigner. Thais you will come across on your trip will probably not care either way if you use the 'wai' though.

Others will have a better idea about online game and besides, I'm married now. Back in the day I mainly used day, night and social circle game and had more action than I could handle. Whenever I tried meeting girls online, many were a disappointment in person. I can see why pipelining online before you arrive would be a good approach for a guy on a short trip though.

May want to reconsider pre booking your inter-country travel before you arrive. Highly likely that you may want to adjust your schedule after you arrive. Travel between the countries you are looking at isn't expensive, so I would recommend playing it by ear with respect to bookings except the first destination.

Mentavious makes a good point about possibly hitting a beach destination and it doesn't have to be Thailand; Indonesia, Malaysia, Phils and Vietnam all have great island beach destinations.

I never wai because I don't know how to do it properly. Depending on your status/social rank and the rank of s/he you wai to, you should hold your hand at different heights. If you're waing a homeless you should hold your hand at chest level and if you wai the king you should hold your hands over your head. Thai of course know how to do this properly, but it is a bit embarrassing when a foreigner wais his new friend as if s/he was a homeless person and at the same time waiing the staff at 7/11 as if they were royalty.

Fuck. Just a heads up to all of you who smoke weed...

Don't touch that shit in Bangkok.

I was in a taxi with my Thai mate and a couple of Russian models switching venues at about 2am. I had about 1 gram wrapped in a bit of paper tucked inside my phone case under some money.

Police checking cars is now pretty common here. We get pulled over for routine check - 20 cops around, checking every car going past. I think: "Oh fuckkk, hope they don't check my phone for drugs..."

They search our pockets, every crevice, including my phone. They find the weed. I can't believe it. I had just smoked a few hours earlier as well (apparently here they can test you on the spot for drugs in your system and if positive it counts as possession).

They sit me down. It's all pretty calm. Russian chicks knew I had the weed - I smoked with them earlier. After 10 minutes talking me down, I tell them they can't help and they should go. My Thai buddy is pleading with the police officer to take a bribe from me (cash / cards are at hotel anyway, I've got nothing almost).

Not happening. I'm on my phone checking penalties - jail, jail, jail. Ugh. Police lend me their portable phone charger and cable since I'm low on battery. Very nice.

Anyway, they aren't taking the bribe so I was told I was spending at least one night (if not quite a few more) in a Thai holding cell. 1 gram? Really?

My friend manages to crack him after like an hour of non-stop talking. 30,000 baht it'll cost me. ($900 USD / $1200 AUD)

Relieved I'm not going to jail. But fucking pissed about the grand.

My friend has to take my hotel card and get the taxi back to my hotel to get my cash/cards while I wait for ages with the police. Eventually comes back with the money. And I'm free at 4:30-5am.

If he wasn't with me speaking Thai, I would be in Thai jail right now 100%. These guys were straight up saying no to any bribe from the start.

Thought I'd let you know since things can get a bit wild in Thailand and you can get the feeling that nobody gives a fuck about anything...which is almost true. Just don't carry weed. And if you have any drugs in your system and you see the cops looking like they are going through a party, hide in the corner somewhere. I heard they tested some foreigners on Khao San Rd the other day and got a few.

1) There are several ones there, most members have different views on that but every place is good if you know how to game.

2) Yes

3) I heard reports of immigration asking to see 20,000 baht in cash to prove that you have enough funds for the trip, but that's unlikely. Around $200 per day of trip.

4) Yes

5) Uber has legal problems here, people mostly use Grab Taxi. If you're in the city, just flag a taxi driving on the way.

6) If you intend to stay here in the long term, you will be expected to speak Thai to a good level.

7) It is perfectly fine to do it, and you should do it. I won't write all details here because it's quite long but there are proper ways to do that. I also "wai" Buddhist shrines when I drive by.

8) Tinder and TF are decent, and you can follow the same protocol: Before meeting them, ask them "How long have you been single".
"I never had a boyfriend" = Eject unless you're looking for a LTR - those girls are the ones who are marriage worthy, and breaking them without commiting results in severe damage to the family.
Any other answer = Proceed with your usual game and enjoy your notch.
Nightgame is easy, but watch out for ladyboys and pros.
Online game is a piece of cake with Tinder, but check the profile before liking, lots of ladyboys.

And don't touch drugs here, even weed - weed is an extremely dangerous plant that can cause catastrophic losses of profit for tobacco companies and oil companies, that's why it's illegal. Two days ago I was stopped because driving without helmet and my license is expired. They were hinting for a bribe but I didn't feel like it so they put my in the backseat of their car and talked with me. I said I have 300, take it. But they wanted 500. I said I only have a 1000 bath bill, if you want 500 you will have to give me change for a 500, too. So he goes out to speak with his boss. I take my phone and make some pictures and he sees this. Haves me delete the picture and write a fine that I have to go to pay at the station. Once there, I only pay 200.

I usually just pay them, but they were so annoying, searching my body and motorbike and asking questions about the motorbike and my passport and what I'm doing in Thailand and shit. They asked who is the owner of the bike? I said it's mine god damn it. I didn't steal it. At least this he believed.

I had another experience a few year ago where the officer writes me a fine for 200 and once at the police station the change it to 500.

Are you aware there is an ever rich and a super rich just outside of the Airport Link Station at the Airport? It's as good of an exchange rate you'll get anywhere in Bangkok.

Not having a go, I've been coming to Bangkok for 6 years and I only found that out in 2016.

Do you mean downstairs at the airport before you buy the ticket getting into the skytrain? I've taken it a few times and did not know that either..

What is the price breakpoint for hotels in BKK? I'm only gonna be there a week, so don't mind spending more to make to most of it.

I'm not rich but haven't had vacation in a while and want to spend a bit more than the average tourist for better service, comfort, and experience.

Reference is when I went to Pattaya in 2013 I paid the then $100/night at the Dusit Thani and that was great. It was near the loop but just far away enough to feel like I wasn't living in walking street. Also had great room service and overall feel.

Surely someone here has been down to Phuket or Phi Phi for New Years Eve? Trying to figure out which would provide the best party/gaming opportunities this year.

Would Phi Phi nightlife still shut down at 2am, or would the party go all night like the one on Koh Phangan?

My main worry about Phuket is it being full of families and couples over the holidays?

I've spent New Years in Phuket. They made a big countdown with a built stage on the beach but I don't know if I'd recommend it. Phi Phi is probably a better option.
