Leticia and the Colombian Amazon Datasheet
Background: I was working as a translator for a tour company in the Amazon and spent a total of 2 weeks there. Basically, I translated whatever the guides were telling the clients.

I spent 1 night in Leticia and the rest in the jungle.

Leticia: Has ~50k inhabitants and not surprisingly, it's kind of a shithole of a town. Everything is always humid, wet. Roads are fucked up. The population consists mainly of transplants from other Colombian states, police or military guys and some local indigenous or mestizo people.

It's a small town and sits right on the Brazilian border. You can cross over to Tabatinga without any passport control whatsoever. I rode a scooter over the border and nobody gave a shit.
Locals say that Leticia is pretty safe due to the heavy police/military presence. Tabatinga on the other hand less so.

Getting there:
Only by airplane or boat.

Girls:
Not as ugly as I thought, since I was expecting the worst. Needless to say that nobody should go to Leticia for the girls, though.

Party:
Went out alone to 2 spots. Kaluha and Mossh. Both where packed on a Friday night and had a lot of girls.
Kaluha looked more seedy and dark. Mossh has a friendlier vibe. Had fun in both though.
Met a friendly Brazilian chick from Manaus in Kaluha. Bounced her to Mossh and then to my dick. Jungle bang was pretty good.

The jungle:
Spent 2 weeks without electricity, Internet, etc. and it was awesome. The company runs a lodge which is located in a really remote spot, about 3 hours upstream by boat from Leticia, it's literally right in the jungle. The guides were all from the area, either Ticunas or mestizos.

They still live in a society that is completely dominated by nature. The sun, the forest and the river dictate their rhythm. They pretty much make everything they need themselves: Food, Shelter, Housing. The hardly use money as there are no proper shops.

The wildlife is a bit tough to spot at times, but there is plenty: monkeys, birds, giant everything (spider, bugs, frogs), caimans, turtels, snakes, dolphins, sloths etc.

I'm back in Europe now and am still processing all the input I got there. It was one of the most intense experiences of my life. Highly recommend to visit the Amazon while in Colombia, it's a world apart.

Some surprising lessons learned:
  • Indigenous girls can be quite hot
  • Women can have 4-8 kids and still stay thin (no fat people in the jungle)

RE: Leticia and the Colombian Amazon Datasheet
Good to see some Leticia info on here, it's a cool and unique spot. I was there a couple years ago as a tourist, so I'll just add a couple more things from an outsider's perspective:

The lack of border control is really an interesting dynamic; the whole area is 500 km from any other town, and the Leticia/Tabatinga airports and the Amazon river are the only ways in and out of the area unless you want to go full Bear Grylls. As pointed out, Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil) are border towns that you can cross without ID, but when you do you'll need to change taxis, currencies and languages. Across the Amazon is a third country, Peru, in the form of an island town called Santa Rosa, which makes the whole area a triple border without passport control. Santa Rosa is kind of a shanty town though, so unless you want to drink all three national beers or say that you visited three countries in a day, you can probably skip it- although it's only a 10 minute boat from Leticia, so why not drink a Peruvian beer and eat some seafood? Also, you can pay in Colombian pesos in Santa Rosa (Peru) but not in Tabatinga (Brazil.)

As OP said, the girls in this region are nothing special, particularly compared to Colombian girls in general. They tend to be very short and indigenous-looking, but as he pointed out, not fat. I was there with an inland Colombian girl, so I can't add any perspective on gaming.

The coolest things to me were the pink dolphins, and seeing them is a hit-or-miss proposition, because the Amazon is too murky to see any fish/mammals unless they surface. Definitely take a jungle tour, but watch your step; there are some seriously angry-looking ants walking around, so keep stepping and watch your surroundings. A sitting duck gets climbed upon and bitten. Ants will also aggressively guard their trees. The jungle is evolution in hyperdrive, so behave like prey instead of a predator.

The city of Leticia is worth exploring by foot or cab (the cabs there are mostly like golf carts with rain flaps.) It's hard to explain, but imagine a safe city (there's a big army base there to combat smuggling/guerillas) combined with a lawless outpost where no one cares about everyday law or trademark infringement (there was a Simpsons' restaurant with a Krusty Burger and Duff beer) and you get a really different kind of place. I don't want to romanticize it too much, because in a lot of ways it's a regular Colombian city where everyone is selling the same shit, but it's one of those places that you should go to once, and once would be enough. Check out Leticia, get some Brazilian Reals and check out Tabatinga (but close to the Colombian border, as OP said, it gets sketchy quick away from the border) and get out of town to an eco-lodge up the river and take some Amazon tours. The night tours are the best, it's when the jungle comes alive. Two or three nights in the Leticia city and one or two nights downriver in the Amazon would be enough. You'll be glad to have seen it, and equally happy to get back to civilization.

OP, for you find the jungle people were prone to getting constant parasites, jungle fever, etc or were they generally always in good health?

I didn't have any medical problems at all. Considering their poverty level (Amazonas is one or the poorest Colombian departments), they looked pretty healthy. You might notice a surprising lack of really old people, though.

I went there during "winter" and hence there weren't that many mosquitos. This apparently changes and in dry season it can get really bad: Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya you name it.

It's not an environment where you want to have delicate health, because unless you are in Leticia or Puerto Narino, the next hospital will be a couple of hours away by boat.

Thanks for the post. I'm heading to Iquitios in Peru this year. It's much larger than Leticia, but there are certainly similarities.

Was there any Amazonian plant medicine activity going on? Did anyone try to sell you ayahuasca?

You sure can, but it's tough for an outsider because the communities are very small and the girls get married young. By age 17 most of them a married and have kids. You'll see 14 year olds with kids.

I actually talked about it with the guide I was working with. He said that it's easy to bang an indigena. Especially if she hasn't been corrupted by the civilization (meaning never visited Leticia or other "big" cities). According to him, you just go very direct and if she likes you back and is horny, jungle bang follows. He also said that the Waitoto tribe had the most beautiful girls (thick legs, big tits and big ass).

No. Ayahuasca is not from this region. I guess you can do it in Leticia but I since I only spend a day there, I wouldn't know. In the Putomayo you'll get the good stuff.

I knew there was some ayahuasca activity in Colombia. Thanks for the note. Of course, this town is so out of the way that there is probably very little "tourism" there.

It's not that far from Iquitos. It looks like it's less than 100 miles. I naturally wonder if they are thinking about trying to build a road from the Leticia area to Iquitos. My guess is that it would just way to difficult.

Of course, you could fly in and out of Iquitos and then take a boat.

Not really. I know though that you can just ride the entire river on a boat. You have different options available (fast and slow). If you go with the slow one, your accomodation will be very basic. You sleep in a hammock and shit in a hole for weeks.

Just dont piss off her family. The tribes in the amazona and la frontera de la selva go to war with each other alot over stuff like that. And you should see some of the aftermath. Huge spears the thickness of an anaconda sewn through warroirs backs and through their spines. I wouldnt get with a girl outside the "city/towns" unless I knew that I would enjoy her family and that the local population was cool with me, not just tolerable.

Edit: And dont get me started on the amazona diet. Do you really want to eat bugs? I am serious. Try the local version of ardvark or pig with a side of grubs. Look up a video of GRUBS on youtube. Not that you would be allowed to live in the village but what if you met her family and they offered you dinner? Haha . Srs. Good source of protein I hear. I understand that you are what you eat and dont want anyones mouth on me that has put THEIR mouth on that.
