Saw it on FB just then and I was shocked. Russia has suffered a larger than usual string of terrorist activity post-USSR, but the significance of this (notwithstanding the scale of it) is that it took place in St. P instead of a far-flung Caucasian region.

I had plans to visit SPB in the near future and that won't stop me.

I'm rather curious to know what the response will be once the dust settles and more info is available to the investigators (perhaps never to us the general public).

As cynic as it sounds, at least we know the Russian government will mourn it's fallen citizens unlike their cucked western european counterparts

This is an interesting one. It could be the Ukranians, the Chechens or one of the various Syrian/Iraqi groups (incl. ISIS).

Odds are in favour of the attacker having an Islamic background, but it's by no means guaranteed in this case. There are some very unpleasant 'far-right' groups in the Ukraine who could quite well be behind it. Certainly one of those occasions where it would be imprudent to jump to conclusions.

I'm (re)reading two very interesting things simultaneously at the moment, which put our current problems with Islam into focus fantastically, and which offer fascinating insights into the Arab world.

The first is a book called 'The Arabs: a History' by Eugene Rogan. It's a comprehensive examination of the history of the region. It is very well written, extremely thoughtful and thought-provoking, and is presented in such a way as to make many of the important details instantly memorable. I have read this book before, and would regard it as a 'must read'.

The other is by Samir Kessir, a journalist assassinated by the Assad regime in Lebanon back in 2005, called 'Being Arab' which so far is proving to be a brilliant investigation into the stagnation of the Arab world, following the nahda of the 19th and 20th centuries, and which helps to explain the regression into Islamism that these recently flourishing states have experienced. I've not finished it, but I would recommend it so far.

Certainly not the Ukrainians, I'd say... Why would the Ukrainian "far-right" kill middle-class, blue-collar Slavs taking the metro? It would be disastrous for the Ukrainian-Nationalists' international reputation, and even at home, I can't see regular Ukrainians rejoicing over 5 humble Russian babushkas and 5 cute student chicks full of hope, all of them too poor to afford a car, maimed and killed in the metro.

Looks like:
70% chances, it's ISIS, including Chechens affiliated or sympathetic to ISIS

20% it's Obama's appointees and moles in the CIA, trying to stir a war with Russia

5% it's some rogue, and stupid, Ukrainian group

3% it's some rogue, and stupid, Ukrainian group, manipulated by Obama's appointees and moles in the CIA
