The first of the two seemed forced to me, I kept wondering if there was a laugh track because it seemed the audience was laughing on cue sometimes before he even dropped the punchline. Maybe I was the one just taking it to seriously, because I didn't laugh once. Or it could be that none of it appealed to me or seemed true.

On the other hand the standup in Texas was friggin hilarious, I haven't laughed that hard at a comedy special in a long time.

Maybe Chappelle is a chameleon who tailors his bits to the audience. I definitely feel more "out of place" in L.A. than Austin.

I'm glad somebody else noticed that. I actually "reviewed" the first one after watching it and said that it felt like they edited in laughs and crowd reactions because I don't feel like the audience was getting his jokes. A lot of the jokes in the first one weren't "laugh out loud funny" in the vein people seemed to want so the reactions (pre-editing, in the sea of faces in certain shots) reflected that.

My assessment on that is that in LA, a lot of that audience was there to see the "legendary Dave Chappelle". They weren't there because they were familiar with his stand up, and to be honest a lot of them only probably knew references to Chappelle's Show and likely hadn't even watched it when it aired. He even remarked about how young the audience was - I think a lot of them were there to say they saw Dave Chappelle and probably knew fuck all about comedy.

That said, the first one was solid still if you just take it for the jokes. To be honest, I think it would have been better had they left it without great reactions (assuming that was the reality) - it would have almost proved his point and showed that his audience wasn't ready for "black comedian" Dave Chappelle to not be PC and SJW and leftist, etc. Without the editing I'd have to guess it would have felt like the uncut version of Mitch Hedberg's Comedy Central Presents filming, which was genius and even more entertaining watching him fight to win over a crowd that wasn't into his comedy and was there just because they heard it was a "Comedy Central" taping.

Also, I agree 100% on the second one. Absolutely top form. He truly is one of those guys who is just built to do comedy on stage. Richard Pryor-esque.

Strange... I found the first LA special to be much funnier material, but maybe that's because I grew up in LA... although I will concede that it seemed very contrived and set up. Noticed a really hot Asian, maybe hapa girl in the audience and sometimes she'd be sitting there, sometimes not. However, the black guy she was next to was always in the same seat. *looking around for the illuminati*

Yeah it's the 'Age of Spin' one. I'm from the UK so have no experience of living in California or Texas and thought it was fucking seriously funny. Can't wait to watch the Texas one tomorrow. The superhero rape joke had one of the white girls in the front row looking severely uncomfortable - I'm glad her boyfriend (I assume) kept laughing though.

Part of his shtick in the show is kind of being a man out of time, so if any SJWs com after him (there's already been some twitter backlash) he can always just say "I'm from a different generation to all you outraged kids".

I noticed many women in the audience seem to barely be laughing or enjoying themselves. They're just seeing the celebrity and couldn't give two shits. Just stay home and let people who are fans and can get jokes have the tickets.

Watched the Texas one, didn't properly laugh out loud like I did for the 'Age of Spin'. His best is still Killing Them Softly - that has so many good bits in it, from the black hostages, to 'Chip' etc. He's one of the best ever in my opinion, because he makes it look effortless.

I agree. I saw the 2 specials he just did on Netflix. His style of comedy is very conversational..very casual and even when he touches on serious issues, you don't feel the weight of it. I think the fact that both of his parents are academics and he grew up in DC lends to his ability to understand different angles. His wife is also Filipina. I saw a brief youtube vid of him after the Pacquiao fight (teh spelling??) and I was wondering why the interviewer stopped him to ask him a question. I know he is a celebrity but I put two and two together and recognise that his wife being Asian would compel him to attend events that could resonate with her on a cultural level. I was laughing when he was on the Howard Stern show and Howard asking him about his wife being Asian, whether she does Asian things and Dave said "She's from Brooklyn, man"..he's a natural joker.

I love comedians who don't just stick to the same routine (either all black American comedy or all white American comedy).

My current favourite is Trevor Noah because as an immigrant and a guy with mixed heritage, he has had no choice to be aware of the different social influences in society. He reminds me of Dave with the ability to capture the views and the voices of people of different cultures and emulate it. Dave does a great middle class white American voice and Trevor did a great Russian, his Trini imitation wasn't bad and the Indian accent was on point for me as well.

Trevor Noah's ability to recognise the social nuances is something he brought to America and continues to use it to look on American society with that keen comedic eye.

They usually film comedy specials two times in different days and edit them together later for one show to add some robustness to the process. Something can go wrong and sometimes some jokes just don't work on some nights etc.

I Agree, defiantly worth the watch. But one thing to remember is that it is a comedy. it's supposed to be raw, and unfiltered. Seen a few people calling him a bigot because of some of the jokes.

Thought both were great, although the Texas one did seem a little better. His OJ stories from LA were great though. Worth the watch if you haven't seen it yet.

You can't look at comedy in a left vs. right, red pill vs. blue pill, triggered vs. the triggers. Comedy is meant to be looked of in the forum of comedy.

If you can make fun of others and yourself you can't be in comedy either as a fan or comedian. Don't let politics get in the way of some funny jokes.
