I thought you guys would like this story. The US Women's Hockey team is boycotting the World Championships due to not receiving enough compensation and now 16 US Senators including some that are well beloved on this forum (Warren, Feinstein) have chimed in and "reprimanded" USA Hockey.

As you know, the women’s team has chosen to boycott the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship games, citing faltering negotiations with USA Hockey regarding equitable pay and resources. Among other issues, the women note that USA Hockey expects female players to “train full time and compete throughout the year,” yet pays them only $6,000 every four years, an amount that would put them far below the poverty line. The women’s team is in the process of negotiating a four-year contract with USA Hockey that includes “appropriate compensation.”

As the National Governing Body for ice hockey in the United States, USA Hockey is required by the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act to “develop interest and participation throughout the United States” in ice hockey and “be responsible to the persons and amateur sports organizations it represents.” USA Hockey is also legally required to “provide equitable support and encouragement for participation by women where separate programs for male and female athletes are conducted on a national basis.”

We are disturbed by reports from the U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team suggesting that USA Hockey is not providing “equitable support” to female athletes. While USA Hockey provides its male athletes with a “seemingly endless” supply of hockey equipment, for example, female players are often expected to “buy their own.” This “inequitable support for equipment, staff, meals, travel expenses, transportation, and publicity” is apparent at younger levels of the sport as well: while USA Hockey spends $3.5 million to support male youth athletes in its National Team Development Program, there is no parallel development program for women.

The U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team has medaled in every Olympics since 1998, when Women’s Hockey was first added as an Olympic Sport. The team has won gold medals at the IIHF World Championships for the past three years in a row. As Megan (sic) Duggan, team captain, announced last week, the women’s team has “represented our country with dignity and deserves to be treated with fairness and respect.”

We urge you to resolve this dispute quickly to ensure that the USA Women’s National Hockey Team receives equitable resources. These elite athletes indeed deserve fairness and respect, and we hope you will be a leader on this issue as women continue to push for equality in athletics.

They want equitable support and use the words "equitable" and "equality" multiple times, but women's hockey is in no way equal to hockey and has no economic potential as some Yahoo commenters pointed out. What distinguishes hockey among team sports is the speed of the game, and you simply don't get this with women's hockey. It's not fun to watch. USA Hockey "invests" in young males for the same reason you make any investment (i.e. for returns).

Personally I like watching women's sports if:
1) the women are attractive 2) you can see their faces 3) you can see their bodies.

My watching of women's sports is confined to the Olympics, and we're talking track and volleyball. Condition # 1 doesn't matter if #'s 2 & 3 aren't applicable; skiing is kind of in between as the tight clothing makes it acceptable.

Their twitter handle is @LiveTheDreamWHL (in case my embedding didn't work, I can't see the tweets when other do this) and actually some of the girls are hot. The white knighting in the comments will give a good chuckle.

What a great use of our legislators' time, but I guess they didn't spend too much time on this statement if they couldn't even take the time to spell the one girl's name correctly.

But they should put the money in the center of the rink in a big pile and make them fight the men for it while they sing oh Canada.

My favorite hockey player, Bob Probert (rip) would take out the whole women's team, and probably play goalie at the same time.

I love the way they couldn't crop the photos properly (despite them being taken precisely for this purpose) so they've had to resize the pics, turning some of the girls into elves and some into dwarves.

The biggest problem with women's hockey is that only the USA and Canada are actually good teams. Every major tournament is guaranteed to be a USA versus Canada final, and only the final is watchable hockey.

If they want equal resources then they shouldn't play with face shields. The equality the senators are pushing for would include the possibility of losing some of their sweet little teeth, broken noses and orbital bones. Maybe someone can explain the concept of "hazard pay" to them. Smile!

Probably because bitches are too dumb to know how to use photoshop or a photo editor properly. Really hurts their case for more females in STEM if they can't even run a social media campaign.

Definitely the bolded. I do sports betting on pretty much every sport out there and even I didn't know that Women's Hockey is actually a thing.

Take an average Minnesotan varsity high school boy's team and they would run that tournament undefeated. What a joke.

I've played with top ranked NCAA D1 girls and they are the skill level of a decent 16 year old boy. It's not even close. An exception I've seen is a couple girl goalies who played boys youth and high school hockey. They went on to play D1 while an equivalent boy goalie couldn't even get Junior B scouts to give him a chance.

When I was in Pee Wee's (5th or 6th grade?), we beat the U-18 AAA Rockford girls team by like 6 or 8 goals. Our coach told us to stop trying after the first 3 or 4.

If these U.S women are so great and equal, why are the NHL scouts picking up 18 and 19 year old Canadian and European guys instead of them?

I'm a goalie and I could be a 3rd or 4th line grinder as a forward on most women's teams. And I've got stone hands with a player stick.
