I have some experience with this in the past couple of months, and a few years ago I did it accidentally. I also worked the door at a college bar for a while, so I know a little about the other side.

My tip is go when it's slow. Without many other people around, it's easy to form relationships with the staff because they're probably bored out of their minds and they would welcome any conversation that will help their night go by faster. Most people only interact with the staff as a customer, so it's really easy to stand out if you just get to know them.

Once you get to know them on slow nights, they'll remember you on the busy nights.

There's another method that I'm aware of that seems to work well where I'm at, and that's basically buying a relationship by tipping extra or when you don't need too. At the moment, I'm not interested in it though because I don't want to form relationships around money, and even if I could, I don't have the skill level to on capitalize them anyway.

It seemed to work for Henry in Goodfellas though.

When you remember that deep down we are all narcissist and seek human connection getting bars on lock is easy. Anytime a doorman lets you into a place you frequent ask him if you can get him a drink or some water. They usually decline sometimes I'll just go get them a water anyway.

On the way out wish them a safe night. Everyone typically responds "you too" or completely ignores them so "have a safe night" is a form of salutations that they are probably unfamiliar with and something they will remember.

Here in austin lot of bartenders have early weeknights off so going out those nights is pretty solid for making connections.
