I don't listen to much new metal these days. Most of it is not meshing with my current state of mind and place in life right now. One band that I've really picked up however is Ghost which are really bringing back the fun into metal in combination with great songs.

Their satanic image and lyrics are extremely tongue in cheek and shouldn't be taken seriously. For anyone carrying a torch for old horror movies their videos are also a treat.

I got really hooked with the Glory hammer/alestorm guys.

The lyrics and the melody fits perfectly a comic I'm working on
(I always insert lyrics from some song that fits the mood of the story in the background on the panels)

Moonspell are a Portuguese heavy metal band, with really solid albuns. They have a big gothic influence in their sound, and it makes them quite unique. The lyrics are also quite good. The guitarrist Ricardo Amorim is also very good.

I recommend these albuns, in no particular order:

Omega white (Gothic, bonus disc from alpha noir)

I love the double entendre of using "Star of the County Down" in this. Down is in Ulster, and Rosie McCann is the star due to her beauty. In this tale, Cuchullainn is the Defender of Ulster, and the star for his heroism. Absolutely brilliant.

Is this thread strictly for heavy, thrash, and/or classic style metal or are all sub-genres cool?

Well, I found this album The Crypts of Sleep a few weeks ago and it's pretty good stuff, sounds like technical death metal to me. The group name is Hannes Grossman and apparently it's just one man's solo project; impressive considering it really sounds like a whole band there. Looks like he's primarily a drummer but it's got pretty good riffs, I dig it.

Personally, I'm a big fan of 90s-early 2000s era. There were some real gems in the mainstream there. Slipknot's first album was heavy as fuck. Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar, and I even thought all of Slayer's albums post Reign In Blood were good too.

That's right. Reign in Blood is overrated

Well, Slayer's first five are considered their quality thrash material, but they've had some decent releases in the 2000s. I'm not super into thrash though so...yeah. 90s was all about some of the choicest cuts of death metal man. Slipknot is good, I do like the direction they've taken on the last LP, their earlier sound had too much filler and would have gotten old in my opinion. #5 is a great mix between the two I think, Corey just needs to stop fucking around in Stone Sour and make another one.

Early 2000s was really a golden era for almost all sub-genres of metal and even a lot of rock music I like came out or started up around then. You should really take a look at some of the less popular stuff man, there is tons of good stuff beneath just the well known acts. I do like tons of -core stuff though so I won't act like I'm super into underground and kvlt only stuff.

I've recently dug me all the old albums from Megadeth,we 're talking deep nineties here. I can honestly say they've aged well.
Has Megadeth changed much it's tune what with the rveolving roster and Mustaine's frequent meltdowns?
