This commercial by the German supermarket chain EDEKA has triggered obesity apologists on Twitter and facebook. Many are calling for a boycott of the company---I think it's beatiful.

Brilliant, but the triggering will be epic. Being in Germany, it would have been even funnier if the video ended in Fat Town, with a rapefugee shouting "ALLAHU ACKBAR!" and blowing himself up. Just for accuracy.

Germany gets a great deal of flack, and rightfully so, especially politically, but in everyday culture and practise amongst themselves they can be ruthlessly blunt and objective. This and many other German ads would never pass in the states. I hope EDEKA (one of my favorite supermarket chains actually) doesn't buckle on this.

There was a time just a few years ago when obesity was called an "epidemic" and it was a commonly understood issue that Americans were eating unhealthy diets and getting overweight and unhealthy. Somehow over the years this has turned a 180 and being overweight is no longer considered bad or unhealthy, but what is bad and unhealthy is addressing it. Weird times.

What a beautiful ad. A reminder that fitness and imagination are tied. Fatness and laziness are tied. When you have both, you lack creativity and drive. I'm absolutely shocked this is a German commercial. After the Audi nonsense, I'm glad to see there's still some based Germans out there. Maybe there's hope yet for Deutschland.

Damn, Leonard, that happened to me this last weekend.

I don't really see my relatives, but I was in town and I just happened to drop in on a get-together they were having.

Everyone kept asking me if I was on a diet.

My aunt even came up to me, looked up at me in awe, and moved her hand over my face, tracing the contours. She kept saying I was so handsome, and not in a "what a handsome nephew" way, in a "what a handsome man" way.

Granted, I'm only 6 pounds overweight, I could lose it in a week or two, but still, I've been eating sloppy for a few weeks, chocolate, fast food, potato chips, etc., and I can easily see the impact.

But to my relatives, who regularly eat processed foods, I looked like I belonged to a different species.

It's going to be interesting to see where this fat-acceptance movement goes when the rubber hits reality-road.

Which is to say, at what stage are we going to see a fatty first attempt to sue a doctor for suggesting they keep their BMI below 25? At what stage are we going to see law suits brought against the military for turfing the applications of lardos?

Personally I think that these hogs are riding the crest of the progressive wave that's about to come crashing down. They, like many of the new members of the freak brigade, are perfectly capable of living a non-freak life. There was plenty of sympathy for stomping out discrimination against people who had no means to alter their circumstances but now this special treatment is demanded for people who very much choose to live the life of the freak, and what's more they seem to revel in the pity parties they throw for themselves as being self inflicted outsiders.

It cannot last. Too few people have any sympathy for fatties. It's not like being born a midget, or with a lisp, or as a soul-less ginger. Nobody who drags their ass onto a treadmill or puts down the second doughnut sees these people for anything other than they are. Lazy, feckless, self indulgent cattle.

Who's the biggest girl there? A chubby black woman sucking in her gut, who's fat is all more or less moored to its correct geographical home.

Why not a 45BMI monster who's every outcropping appears to be desperately trying to reach the centre of the earth? What? Are they ashamed to represent such people?
