Has anyone found a decent replacement for kickasstorrents? While soulseek has been working wonders for music, I've got no idea where to find any other forms of media or content. I got lazy and defaulted to that site for so long and I haven't found anything even close to replace it since that idiot in charge fucked it all up. They went down just a few months after I got my little personal server at home setup and I was putting stuff on it to watch and stream it from anywhere.

If you have a DVD drive on your computer, you can easily rip blurays or DVD's from your local library. Has the added advantage of being available offline, not worrying about ads, plays on any device.

Last time I was in my Library, there was a middle-eastern guy wearing headphones watching hardcore porn on the research computers there.

Not discreetly either. The computer screens are in full view of a large chunk of that floor.

I found it more amusing that everyone around was trying to pretend it wasn't happening. You could almost hear the gears grinding in the (Lesbian) Librarian Clique behind the counter, where their need to be perceived as being Feminist was clashing with their fear of being perceived as being racist.

Part of me hoped the lesbians winced as they had to mop up the jizz, but, then again, they are lesbians: it's more likely they'd grab a turkey baster to gain the the Good Person points having a mixed race baby would grant them.

Apparently, the courtyard out the front has since been repaved into a Diversity Courtyard - with tiles holding photos of members of the community to show that being from that town means being from every town and is therefore meaningless.

Libraries are now filled with homeless dregs and bums of all shapes and sizes. Why?

You can thank your gutless, jello-backed local politicians who found it necessary to abolish the "out of date" ordinances that kept vagrants out of public spaces. We now have to be sensitive to their "right" to flounce on couches in the public library all day in an alcoholic stupor with saliva dribbling out of their mouths.

No one is allowed to call a bum a bum, of course. They're considered "transitionally domiciled" or some other sanitized jargon.

And if it's not the haggard vagrants in trenchcoats and gloves, it's the bloody kids playing video games on the computers all day. I can generally quiet them down by shooting them a venomous look. That works.

This is one situation where you actually can place a lot of blame at the feet of technology.

First library was just books, then it was mostly books with a small room at the back where some nerds went on something called the internet that no one understood.

Everyone went there, oldsters reading the paper and teens doing homework and harried moms getting books for kids and sitting their kids in front of story tellers for free. Homeless people were there, but not in such high numbers, so not really an issue.

Now the library is a place to go and fart around on the internet. Is this because the homeless people demanded it?

Did the bums decide to remove all of those shelves and replace them with a million internet terminals plus free WiFi?

Librarians wanted to be modern, cutting edge, and I would imagine that they didn't know what the future of libraries was even supposed to be, so they deferred to the wishes of the patrons.

Can you imagine what the response would have been if, in the late nineties, they had put their foots down and said, "The library is for books. If you have any questions, there is no Google here, ask a reference librarian."

They would have been accused of being Luddites and regressives and out of touch losers living in the past.

So, who is going to go to the library now? High schoolers can do everything at home on their computers, ditto the pensioners. A mom trying to get her kids to read, well, all right, but the kids are probably dragging their feet, and clamoring for some new pointless gadget.

The state college library reference room where I am writing this is about the size of a small department store, and it is monitors as far as the eye can see. Used to be all books, and if you came here every few months during the early 2000's, it would be like a time lapse video of a bunch of wasps taking over an ant hill, shelves disappearing, and nothing but desks and long tables populated by the blue faces, people staring somewhat blankly into their screens in the reflected light. Even the college libraries.

So, yeah, at the city library, row after row of people watching porn, violent movies, violent games, hypnotic jewel drop games, fantasy gambling games.

Information wants to be free though, so let's not set any limits whatsoever. Let's not set up terminals that only deal with serious subjects from reputable sites curated by other librarians. That would be censorship, that would be uninclusive, that would be judgmental, that would be discrimination.

The public demanded to be part of the digital age, and the librarians, unsure of where things were going, and fearing irrelevance if they didn't fall in line ceded to their wishes.

This is what the public asked for.

Probably demanded.

And now the library isn't a library anymore, with people quietly reading, taking notes, collaborating on study projects, keeping up with current events, taking part in cultural activities and meetings or lectures and performances by authors and musicians.

The library is now a big recreation room, and all the joy of patient work and research, and all the quiet but compelling excitement of intellectual discovery has been mostly replaced by the harsh and degraded stimulations of crashes and fights and fantasies of wealth and sex and personal dominance.

A library now could be described as what Times Square in New York used to be, the place you had to go to indulge in all your dark fantasies and impulses. No, the internet is Times Square, and the library is a small town Times Square for losers, with its time limits and restrictions on websites, and lack of privacy since everything you do is tied to your name and library card.

Uplifting things are not going on in people's heads in a library, coarse thoughts have crowded them all out, and that is because there was no real discussion of what it is or is supposed to be. It was just blindly pushed towards the future.

So is it so surprising that a place that encourages coarse thought attracts coarse people? And as the coarse people show up, why wouldn't that drive out the former patrons who wanted to study without hearing bums arguing and loud conversations on Obama phones? If you can get it all online on your computer anyway, why even go to the library for it?

So where does that leave the library? Who will go there but the people who don't have or can't afford computers and internet access of their own?

If you want to get rid of the homeless people, get rid of all the cheap thrills. Books alone would act as a kind of repellent to most of the homeless population. All that would be left is to do if you didn't read is talking, eating, sleeping, and if those things aren't allowed, only the homeless who are readers would be there, and that is a benefit to society, that they spend their time that way, not a burden. It won't kill anyone to be around a few homeless readers.

I know this is all a fantasy. Never happen. Most of the patrons of the library as well as the librarians themselves are caught up in modern technology signaling, and to dissent is taboo.

I just find it hard to blame all of this on homeless people coming in from the cold to pass the time in idle fantasy. Yeah, a lot of them are assholes and perverts and treat the place like it is their own hobo club house.

What I am saying is that functionally, it is a hobo club house, catering to the lowest common denominator of tastes, and no one should be surprised when the not-library attracts not-readers.

I've watched the first four episodes of Dear White People.

There is nothing good about it.

The basic idea is that a bangable black girl has a radio show at a fictional ivy league college. The radio show is girl power and black power oriented. She is a prominent member of the black student union but unfortunately she fucks a white guy. Then there's some other gay shit going on with some small black kid and his roommate.

Nobody likes girl power more than me. My problem with this show, much like my problem with Girls on HBO, is that you don't have to show the girls being sluts to show off this girl power. Just be good at whatever it is you want the girls doing, leave the whoreness out. The girls in Girls weren't powerful at anything except getting fucked.

Now, Girlboss on Netflix does a better job b of this, but its bad humor. Girlboss is some gal in San Francisco that lives next door to Ru Paul not in drag. She starts some type of eBay company selling clothes, and is very pro-girl power. She has one dude she bangs through out all the episodes, and even then its not the whole show. In the last one though she catches the guy getting blown behind some drums. It made me happy though because Girlboss wasn't sucking the dick.
