So last week I had an interview on Skype that lasted 1 1/2 hours. Everything seemed to be going REALLY well and then the interviewer gave me a test of sorts (the job requires knowing Standardized tests very well) - in the first part, interviewer (male) asked me to complete several questions within a specific time frame and then read him my answers. I know I did very well on those parts and he was impressed and happy. But then came the one section where I literally bombed it -- on one of the sections I didn't even bother since I had not done it in a long time. He then said if I could use some extra minutes since he was very insistent I complete that part. I did but I know I did horribly. Anyway, that's the ONLY terrible thing about the interview...he then ended the interview by saying "we'll be in touch, thanks". Is that a good or bad sign? What should I do in the coming days? I mean, should I follow up, etc?

He means he'll see if anybody else does better than you on those tests, and if they don't he'll choose you.
A follow-up could only mean the difference if it's between you and another equally qualified candidate who doesn't follow up -- in which case they might surmise you're more enthusiastic about the position.

They're going to be in touch either way to let you know if you were successful or not, so I wouldn't be reading too much into that statement.

If you didn't ace it, then it's possible you didn't get it, but the reverse is also true.

Even if you did ace it, that doesn't make it a certainty.

As horrible as the waiting is, that's all you can do at this stage (I don't agree that the person following up splits the difference between the person who didn't).

Phoenix: Those were my thoughts exactly. I think he was really happy with the results but then considering that he can also choose someone who does well on ALL sections, there would be no reason to choose me. I was thinking of following up by sending him some other info about me, etc.

Windom: Someone I know who is a seasoned interviewer told me the same...that VERY LIKELY they will let me know either way if I got it or not, considering how much time was spent on the interview and the fact that this interviewer always answers my e-mails.

Did they tell you when they'd contact you? It's more likely to be a fobbing off if they didn't give you a cut off date.

Nope - no date or time frame was given although he did mention that they are now in a period of "heavy recruiting".

You did great on everything up until then but the fuck up happened last and will be all he remembers about the interview. That's just my hunch, could be wrong.

I understand that you're a little anxious post-interview. But that's a pretty innocuous statement.

Even if you killed it in the test and interview they're not gonna offer you the job right then and there like they do in the movies. I'd just be patient.

At the end of the interview my final question is typically something along the lines of "when can I expect to hear back with your decision to pursue me further or not?" They will provide an exact or approximate date, and this not only eliminates the anxiety, but you know how much time you have to prepare for the next phase of the interview, whether it's technical or behavioral based.

When I'm hiring someone, I close out every interview I do with We'll be in touch, whether they knocked it out of the park or actually shat their pants in my office. I never telegraph in advance whether they should expect an offer or not. I also like to wait and see if they have the basic human decency to send a thank you email before I finalize anything. So there's not much to read into it.

For the most part, the only time you'll get hired "on the spot" is at a grocery store, fast food restaurant etc. I got a job at a competitive firm and they ended my second interview with "we'll hopefully be in touch". Do you know if there was supposed to be a second interview? I wouldn't recommend waiting on edge-- go out, apply to more jobs, and practice the part of the interview that you bombed.

Yes, I know there is another step to this interview. I mean, as I said, he seemed genuinely interested in me and even took the time to answer all my e-mails and was extremely punctual. I continue applying for jobs but that "we'll be in touch" is unnerving sometimes.

Cr33pin I spoke with your gynecologist and I have some grave news. You results came back and you have a condition called Large Penis, like Herpes it is permanent. If it flares up (gets erect) just stick it in a young woman until it goes down. Again, my apologies.

I thought that it's just a stock phrase employers use to prevent jobseekers from unnecessarily bothering them in the future. Basically, "Don't call us. We'll call you." Also, it keeps the jobseeker in suspense that maybe, just maybe he'll get the job, and is basically a psychological potshot to try convince the jobseeker not to look for other jobs.

I would flip the script - look for other jobs (in case they reject you), and if they don't get back to you, ask them what was your greatest flaw that made them reject you (can be useful info going forward to new job interviews).

I disagree. The only job interviews I have ever done were for attorney jobs at law firms. Except for three times, all three of which I wasn't offered the job and never heard back from them, every single time, I was hired on the spot at the first interview. Some of those times, they said that before the interview, they weren't even considering making me an offer, but that I won them over. I can't even tell you what I said or didn't say.

Never wait for job interviews to finalise unless you are in the know. Look for other positions and take the lesson learned whilst it is fresh in your mind still.

You can approach job interviews like approaching girls; the more you do the better you will become if you learn from mistakes. You learn timing, what the interviewers want to hear etc.

If you have an awesome CV its a matter of dont fuck up game. If you need to prove yourself through lack of experience its a different process.

Most companies will not hire you on the spot as they have to get upper management approval.

Spend your time waiting applying and interviewing for other jobs.

Yes. And have a few drinks beforehand to loosen you up. Especially if you are doing this Skype crap.
