This attached article has a pretty decent and current take on bitcoin, and even it's title kind of speaks for what it is trying to explain, "why bitcoin just had an amazing year"
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk...43cb37b511
By the way, except for price performance in 2014, every year (since it's 2009 inception) has been quite amazing for bitcoin
and by the way, except for price performance in 2014, even 2014 was an amazing year for bitcoin in terms of ongoing development that continued to take place during that time (in spite of negative price performance from the beginning to the end of that calendar year).
JJG, what's your opinion on other cryptocurrencies? Specifically ethereum.
(01-03-2017 11:04 PM)Genghis Khan Wrote: JJG, what's your opinion on other cryptocurrencies? Specifically ethereum.
For the most part, I believe that 99% of other cryptos including ethereum are pump and dump scams and have other centralization issues. There may be various exceptions and even contributions that other cryptos can make to the crypto space and the technology, etc, but they are frequently lacking in security (unlike bitcoin).
Anyhow, if we want to go into more specifics to discuss various other cryptos, I would not mind doing so in the alt crypto thread, rather than in this thread.
https://www.rooshvforum.com/thread-32992.html
In respect to bitcoin and this thread, there is already a whole hell of a lot that can be discussed in regards to bitcoin, and it seems that this thread should attempt to stay attentive to various bitcoin matters, to the extent feasible.

Hahahahahaha...
good luck with that.
There could be some downside, so maybe you will be fine.
I am glad that you only sold 30%... , but I agree that sometimes it can be decent to take some profits off of the table as prices go up, and I do the same thing on an ongoing basis (about between 1% and 2% for every $100 increase in price)

JJG - know you didn't say $5K, no worries. We're doing good.
GK - I own 5K ETH, 3K under $4.

Gots me a problem. I have too many bitcoins from purchases last year and this year.
I want to see if I can predict btc's price close again and make it 3 out of 3 years right. For 2017, btc will end above $1825. This thread will have over 1 million views.

Got 1000 ether at $8. My guess is year end, bitcoin will be 900+ and ether 25+.
I
posted last week regarding a
speculative theory JJG had linked to earlier. Since then, each day's rise in price (without a significant pullback) has only made this theory look more and more likely.
If the author and I are correct, we're on the verge of (well, technically, about halfway through) the latest bitcoin bull run. Once we clear the previous ATH, the price should skyrocket upwards of $3k/coin before crashing back down again and consolidating around a floor that's a bit higher than the previous ATH but substantially lower than the peak of the bull run (perhaps $1,500 or so).
When looking at the last three bubbles (Nov 2013, Feb 2013, June 2011), each occurred over 20-24 days, with the climax and crash taking 7-14:
June 2011 bubble:
Feb 2013 bubble:
Nov 2013 bubble:
With this latest run beginning on Dec 21st, that puts us exactly two weeks in, or about halfway through:
Again, if this theory holds then we're about to see some major movement. Hold on to your hats fellas!

Yes, Satoshi.... sooner or later you are going to be correct.
You have been calling top since about $250... then many many times thereafter... yes, some day you are going to be correct, and then you can tell us all that can confidentally assert: "told you so"

We are doing so good that it can be a bit difficult to keep up with all of the action...

Thanks for highlighting those points for us and framing it in your own assessment and analysis, which I think remains a real great working perspective.
Even though I generally attempt to follow a pattern, I do kind of hedge a little bit on the margins in terms of these kinds of theories .. so I may accumulate a bit more and sell a bit less with the expectation of the theory playing out.. Of course, in my thinking I am always prepared for the just in case scenario, and that may be a result of being traumatized by multiple bearwhale dumps and FUD in the past couple of years, so still kind of thinking that it could happen again... or some exchange gets "hacked" or something.

Someone is going to have to buy at the top. Who will be the fool this time?
(01-04-2017 06:52 PM)Satoshi Wrote: Someone is going to have to buy at the top. Who will be the fool this time?
Define top? none of us know "top" including you, until after looking back in retrospect. You have been describing top since $250, so it is difficult to consider you as reliable in any kind of meaningful way, no?
I don't know why you want to seem like you are going to make fun of guys and decisions that they may make (without really any substance to back up what you are saying beyond the fact that you repeat the same thing over and over about bitcoin being top heavy).
You seem like you cannot accept the fact that there continues to be a lot of buying pressure in bitcoin at the moment and a lot of really decent fundamentals, and really in the past several days BTC trade volume has been picking up, so really that volume increase (and sign of a price battle) could traject bitcoin into much higher prices or we could end up going flat or we could go down.. there are a lot of potential ways to protect your investment for such possibilities, whether you are just learning about bitcoin or whether you have been in it for a while.
With a little research and reading up on the matter, RVF guys should be able to figure these kinds of matters out for themselves and attempt a plan that would be suitable for their finances, views of bitcoin, risk profile and other factors. These are not black and white matters, and you should understand that by now.

Bought at $700 a month ago. Sold today at $1120 100% of holdings. Did I sell too early?

That is for you to decide whether there is any more upside potential left... and also in light of how much you invested and whether you plan to buy back or completely get out.
There are a lot of theories to suggest (even in this thread) that this current price uptrend might only be warming up. .. yeah none of that is guaranteed, but you can look back at bitcoin's history and also at various theories regarding s curves in new technologies to see that maybe there is a whole hell of a lot more upside potential for bitcoin.
Some guys do not sell at all and are waiting for prices much higher. I personally sell some proportion of what I own as the price goes up (so maybe around 1% or 2% for every $100 price rise (but then I buy back too, as the price goes down)).
Personally, I would suggest some kind of selling in stages rather than all of it at once, but you may end up being correct (in your gamble) - even though am of the belief that you are treating bitcoin like a gambling situation and the odds seem to be a bit against a price reversal at this point.
Of course, someone like Satoshi, would tell you to sell for sure, and he probably would have told you to sell at $780, for whatever that is worth.

All the ideas I have in tech (I'm a robotics engineer) I can see opportunities for building bitcoin into them.
What is the easiest non scam way for me to chuck a few grand into bitcoin and just have it sitting? There are a lot of really suspicious people out there proselytizing cryptocurrency!
I'm going to need some bitcoin to play with in the future so may as well start now. I heard Andreas Antonopoulos on the JRE, should I just do what he says?

I think that Andreas uses Coinbase to cash out, when he needs fiat, but he also frequently attempts to get paid in bitcoin.
I think the easiest non scam ways are to hook your bank up to some account like coinsbase or some other exchange that may be in your location .. you are in new zealand?

Yeah I am, I'd be a little hesitant to hook up a bitcoin wallet with my bank as that seems somewhat counteractive?
One of the main reasons bitcoin is so attractive to me is because it bypasses the banks!

Apparently China has made a statement regarding capital controls of virtual currency causing (i think) Chinese holders to start selling off, so Bitcoin is dropping quite alot now, will see where it ends up settling.
Edit: It just fell below 900 dollars, and still dropping.
Just buy through localbitcoins then. You're likely going to have to pay a premium and there are always dangers in meeting strangers IRL with cash if you want to avoid the escrow service, but that's the way to do it if you want to avoid bank transfers.
