Brazilian football/soccer team Chapecoense were on route to Medellin for the first game of a South American championship final last night.

Unfortunately they didn't arrive. The plane crashed mere miles from the airport in the mountains. I've heard different reports; technical failures, horrid weather. But what's definitive is that despite the nature of the crash, miraculously there are a few survivors (6) in a plane that had ~81 passengers.

22 of the passengers were players of the club. Many others were expected to be part of coaching and technical staff, journalists, and others linked to the club.



The team Chapecoense itself is not a very well-known side. 5 years ago they played in the 4th division of Brazil, which goes without saying is incredibly weak. Players at that level have to hold regular jobs to pay the bills despite being professional footballers. Gradually they started improving, and they finally reached the first division in recent years.

They had a chance of finishing a historical year. They took down a few giants in South American footy on their way to the final. Here's a video of their celebration following their semi-final win over San Lorenzo mere days ago:





This is a sad day for fans of the sport worldwide. Obviously in and of itself a plane crash with many deaths is a tragedy. But still... Imagine what it would be like to see this happen to your team? Supporters must be emotionally crushed beyond comprehension.

I believe at least 2-3 players are among the few survivors. They're currently in critical care in Colombia, hopefully they make it. There's no telling how traumatised they must be.

Apparently the Paraguayan pilot was able to ditch the fuel onboard just prior to the collision, which prevented an explosion, guaranteeing the lives of the few survivors.

Only 3 players survived. Whole team is dead, including Coaching staff and Board members, I think President of the team too.

There's also a few injured players who didn't travel with the squad who obviously survived. I always wonder in cases like this where there are a few survivors what the difference is between death or survival.

The same thing happened in 1949 with a plane crash with an entire Italian football team as passengers.

Could we add "local football team" to the title? For a sec I thought that the National football team were on the plane, they kinda suck nowadays but they're not the same.

My thoughts are with them, what a tragic loss. Things like these shouldn't happen to them, or any of us.

I was following all the Copa Sudamericana, this team surprised me and eliminate Some important Teams. I expected to see a great final game tomorrow, but Sadly This won't be possible.

My condolences to all their families and this teach us to enjoy and do everything in our lifes, we don't know the end.

Beyond tragic! I haven't heard of this time, but regardless, any crash is horrible! My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected!

May their souls rest in peace and the club be born again from its ashes to reach even higher levels!

Very sad news...

I have been following the team closely through the Campeonato Brasileiro and they were doing great. There's one more game coming up on Sunday against Atletico-MG which I believe is going to be cancelled. (for obvious reason).

I know that they did an amazing job on Copa Sudamericana. Too bad this happened...

Such a fucked up situation. I think the worse way of going is in a plane, because you are in sheer and utter terror for the last few moments of your life and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. Just sucks when it's young men living life, fucking bitches and doing what they loved. RIP homies.

Serious question, why aren't commercial aircraft equipped with parachutes under every seat?

I imagine there would be a very high rate of survival in the event of a crash if people could just jump out the emergency exits and parachute safely to the ground...

It would be extremely rare to know that the plane was going to crash and still have enough time/stability to evacuate it. The only recent example I can think of is the Lufthansa crash, and I imagine they were hoping until the end that the pilot would come to his senses.

Consider how long it takes for the lardos to empty the plane when it's sitting still on the runway, much less pulling several Gs in a tail spin with less than a minute 'til impact. That, and those planes are not made for skydiving. Fair chances you'd be bounced off a wing, tail or end up in an engine.

Goes to show ANYTHING can happen and to enjoy every second you have.

I saw alot of this on my newsfeed - sad to say it was nice to get away from politics and to honor these players.

To add to that, skydiving planes go slowly enough for people to jump off the plane safely, and not get in a stall.

Commercial aircraft would stall way before its speed were slow enough to jump out safely without getting winged or eaten up in the engine. And we all know what happens when a commerical a/c stalls (AF 447, etc)
