If you're worried about having to say at one place for 3 months I think that last checkup could be performed by most professionals. The first 3 I would want to do with the same docs.

Was there any follow up needed after the surgery? And if yes, how was that treated?

Looks like a viable option for sure.

Thanks for sharing it man!

Cheers.

Anyone in here has had Lasik done overseas? Preferably in SEA?

@VP

I got my LASIK (all laser with a new bad ass USA built machine) done in Cebu last January for 90,000 Pesos ($2000 USD).

It was a great experience, top notch staff, and my vision is now 20/10.

I've had zero problems with it. You will get halo effect for about 2 months and some dryness for about 3-4 months in my experience, but after that it's all good.

This is the place I went in Cebu: http://larrazabaleye.com/index.html

There are also comparable places here in Manila.

As others have said, this was the best $2000 I've spent. I always hated glasses/contacts and didn't start wearing them until late in life.

My father in law is an ophthalmologist and is specialized in LASIK surgery and he's pretty good. Colombian medicine standards are pretty much at USA level in good Clinics. Public hospitals are just terrible. You need to find, professional and qualified people.

Too much fear-mongering going on here.

Yes you could have complications and you need to do your research to give informed consent. A telling factor will be how many of your ophthalmologist's patients are still recommending him years after their surgery. Anecdotally, my night vision is better after the surgery. I can distinguish more color in near-darkness situations than I could before. Tailor you diet and your supplements for visual health if you need to. The references in the post above are old enough that they aren't up to date with the advancement of the procedure.

RE: LASIK thread
I agree. My vision sucks and I plan to get LASIK done in the near future because I hate wearing glasses. If I were a credulous person, I'd easily decide not to after reading Filbert's post. There are indeed people whose vision got worse after undergoing the procedure, but there are also many, if not more, whose vision got better as well. It's like deciding not to get a product on Amazon after reading the 1- and 3-star reviews while ignoring the many 4- and 5-star reviews. My advice to anyone who's on the fence: Do thorough research. Don't let the success stories get to your head, but don't let the negative ones get to your head either. Surgeries are performed by humans and humans are infallible. Seek out the best ophthalmologist, the best technology, and before you decide, make sure it's absolutely something you want to do. You're taking a risk, whether you like it or not.

The problem is no matter how good an ophtalmologist or technology is, the technique itself is defective, i.e. corneal nerves are cut, and it mangles everything.

Many people are happy with the results initially, but many complications may emerge later in, like, 8-10 years.

The medical literature contains numerous reports of late-onset LASIK complications such as loss of the cornea due to biomechanical instability, inflammation resulting in corneal haze, flap dislocation, epithelial ingrowth, and retinal detachment. The LASIK flap creates a permanent portal in the cornea for microorganisms to penetrate, exposing patients to lifelong increased risk of sight-threatening corneal infection. Complications may emerge weeks, months, or years after seemingly successful LASIK.

RE: LASIK thread
On Tuesday, I called the lasik clinic here in Austin. They made an appointment for me the same day. The appointment took about an hour or an hour and a half, they did a bunch of tests and told me I was a good candidate for the procedure.

I told them let's do it.

We scheduled the lasik for Friday.

On Friday, I went in, was given valium to sleep after the procedure, laid down on a seat and had a laser machine pushed onto my eyes for a few seconds.

Immediately afterwards, I was given eye shields and a pair of sun glasses to wear.

I went home and slept for a few hours, then laid down the rest of the day and avoided reading.

The next morning (Saturday), I went to a checkup and they said everything was going well.

I threw away over $900 of contact lenses, formula, and glasses that Saturday.

On Monday, I had one more checkup to make sure everything was fine. The doctor said everything looks good.

I still wear my sunglasses when I go out, and I'm careful not to rub my eyes, but I've experienced no discomfort or pain whatsoever.

The doc said to use artificial teardrops every hour, which I've been doing, even though I don't feel any discomfort. The doc says it will help with the healing process.

At the clinic, they tested my vision and they said it was 20/15, but it's still a bit blurry. The doc says that will go away in a few months, but if my vision stays the way it is right now, I couldn't be happier.

Total cost was $4200 for both eyes, and I had astigmatism. The cost can be spread out over 18 months at zero interest, so I'll be paying about $250 a month until it's paid off.

Everything is great so far. One side effect is that I sleep earlier and wake up earlier now, because when I get sleepy, I can just sleep, instead of debating whether to take my contacts/glasses off already or not. Then in the morning, when I wake up, I'm instantly ready for the day, instead of opening my eyes and deciding whether I should go put on my contacts/glasses yet, or get some more sleep.

I think the extra productivity alone will pay for the cost of the procedure, and that's in addition to the savings on glasses/contact lenses.

I'm really looking forward to making love and just falling asleep afterwards, instead of having to go and take off my contact lenses or having to wear my glasses the whole time.

It'll be nice for girls to actually be able to see my eyes, instead of seeing them through my glasses or dulled by the plastic of the contact lenses.

Anyhow, that's my experience this week, guys.

I hope this helps those of you guys considering the procedure to make a more informed decision.

I believe that Lasik diminishes your night vision. Most pilots will wear glasses until they get older and then they might elect to have the procedure, since your night vision decreases with age and at that point there would be a nelgible difference between pre and post op night vision.

You shouldn't have thrown away the glasses. You may need the suckers again, as regression is common.
Contacts ok, as you'll never be able to use them again, except maybe scleral lenses.

I just want guys to make an informed decision, as it's too risky, imho. The rest of your life can be at stake.

MiscBrah, I hope you are not connected to some laser eye clinic. Just saying.

The opinion of reputable Dr. Edward Boshnick:

My feeling is that lasik surgery and other refractive surgical procedures exist solely to enrich doctors and the corporations that manufacture the laser equipment and not to benefit mankind. Because a large part of my ophthalmic practice involves restoring vision to those who have experienced varying degrees of vision loss from LASIK, my advice is not to get involved with this procedure. If you have experienced compromised vision as a result of LASIK, you are more than welcome to contact me to discuss what can be done to help you regain quality vision.

If you can see well with your eyeglasses or contact lenses, don't even think about getting involved with lasik. If you are having vision or comfort issues with your contact lenses, make an appointment with a contact lens specialist and have him/her refit you with a lens design that will address these issues. Whatever you, the patient, decides to do, by all means stay within the non-surgical arena.

My mom had PRK 13 years ago. She smokes and still has 20/20.

My training mentor had PRK 15 years ago. Still maintains 20/20.

PRK/LASIK are approved for military special operations. You think the military would allow a risky procedure to be performed on guys they've spent millions of dollars training?

Your fears have no basis in reality. Do I need to go find some horror stories of people getting serious eye infections from wearing contacts?

(11-23-2016 03:09 AM)Filbert Wrote:  MiscBrah, I hope you are not connected to some laser eye clinic. Just saying.

Yes faggot, please PM me guys and come to my laser eye clinic.

I got PRK to qualify for the job I wanted. Its been the best decision I've made in the last year.

What Filbert isn't telling you is there are also risks to wearing contacts. Many people leave their contacts in too long. If you scratch your eye while taking them out you can get an eye infection. Avoid treatment for too long and you can lose your cornea. This will prevent you from getting any sort of laser eye surgery. This is more common than you'd think.

I'm going to pile on and say my optometrist, who was not connected to my ophthalmologist in any way, had LASIK in the mid-1990s and still has 20/20 vision.

I too feel especially high-energy now that I've had the procedure. I keep waking up around 5 AM with no prompting.

Isn't it incredible being able to wake up and see? Most people who have had good vision their whole lives don't understand how much of a blessing this really is. Its also quite nice not having to take contacts whenever you go out for the night. I've went from having to be driven home by my buddies after a hard night of partying to being called "eagle eyes."

I had mine for 4 years now, I used to be blind as a bat, now it's still 20/20. My night vision is perfect. Best decision I've ever made especially regards to how much I have enjoyed playing various sports afterwards, and with Game.

The clinic I went to had records of people doing it going back about 30 years. I had aftercare for 1.5 years afterwards every month. They did a great job.

Please report back in a couple of years.

Filbert, what are your credentials? Are you an ophthalmologist, an armchair guru, or a Luddite? Was your ex-wife an eye doctor or something?

No operation is without its risks, nobody here is denying that. But what are the complication rates? What are the probabilities? For every complication, how many satisfied people on a five or ten year span? On a 20 year span?

Why are you so opposed to LASIK that you're throwing around anecdotes?

I found one of your posts on the PRK thread saying that ecstasia risk is from 0.05% to 2.8% on the outside for LASIK, which is a significantly high success rate. Furthermore, given the small sample size (and taking under-reporting into account), it is likely that the 2.8% probability is overstated as p-values would be large.

Furthermore, quality is not evenly distributed among the medical population. If you have straightforward symptoms, go to a qualified surgeon with a long track record, and take the recovery regimen seriously, you're much more likely to have success without side effects than in the opposite.

Fear mongering doesn't fly around here. Either cite studies from valid journals, or GTFO.

RE: LASIK thread
I had it done almost 15 years ago as a student. My eye doc gave the green light, mentioning that eventually I would need eye glasses along with everyone else. I still had 5 five years of competitive sports ahead of me and I was at the beach all year. All I could think of was wanting to ditch my specs.

The procedure itself was kind of strange, you can smell your eye burning, and see some smoke/vapor or something. Just weird. With the prospect of not needing glasses anymore, I would have let them cut off my right nut.

I know it could not have been that expensive, or my dad would not have done it (we had money, but he was cheap).

15 years later I can tell my vision is not as great as my younger years. Nothing too bad and not even close to needing reading glasses or other corrective action. It is my understanding that this is normal.

I'll never forget my first session out in the water post-surgery. Changed my life.

The truth is, as most procedures it has its risks. What I´ve discussed with my inlaws on the subject is that depending on how good your sight is, it can be viable or not.

Eventually you will have to use glasses. However, you can get rid of them for several years depending on how well it´s made. Most of the patients he attend are dying to get rid of their glasses, but if their "far away" sight is pretty good, it is not worth it since they would have to kind of damage it a bit for you to see properly from up close.

I had it done 3500 for 2 eyes- lasik flapless surgery.

Vision is pretty good but slight regression. about -0.5 on both eyes....started at 6.5.

Have minor halos when tired and @ night but overall Quality of Life huge improvement.

Would do again.
