Podesta is important to the Democrat establishment. He's influential enough that they cutting him loose is at least as risky as being embarassed by wikileaks.

No one expected anyone would notice or care about Spirit Cooking. The emails themselves didn't have any pictures or graphics or anything, or any explicit acknowledgement from JP himself.

A lot of the juicy stuff from wikileaks is more embarassing for others (especially the press) than for Podesta, much less Clinton.

Coincidentally, the corporate press has done a great job of ignoring and downplaying Wikileaks. Maybe they thought that would work.
