I was notified that the bitcoin was in my wallet before I had my phone back in my pocket. Fees as of this post: Buy 10.7%, Sell 1.2% from Bitcoin Average. Those fees will change. I suspect it may pressure the local buying and selling of Bitcoin in person.

The lady that works there told me that the machine is very, very popular.

You may be able to find a nearby ATM with https://coinatmradar.com/

Thanks for that video, Kwisatz.

I will note a couple of things.

First: the video leaves the impression that if you buy bitcoins, you will have access to them almost immediately, when in fact, they will show up in your wallet, almost immediately, but you generally will not have access to them in under 30 minutes (and 30 minutes is a kind of best case scenario).

Second, it is a bit interesting regarding how much of a difference is the fee for buying versus selling. When I buy and sell on Localbitcoins, I charge about 4%, and I charge the same either way, and I think that my fees are pretty competitive. In other words, I get quite a few transactions. Actually, I am not really sure about how to read the situation exactly, but when I first started trading on localbitcoins, I almost exclusively got people who were wanting to buy bitcoin's from me, but I hardly got anyone who wanted to sell bitcoins to me, and I think that my buying rate was actually only about 2%. I subsequently changed my buying rate to around 4% because i really did not want to buy bitcoins with such a small buy spread (especially given some the risk of such activities). In about the past three months, I established relations with a couple of guys who sell bitcoins to me on a fairly regular basis (about 3 times every two weeks between the two of them). Anyhow, they seem so eager and regular to sell bitcoins to me, that I almost feel as if I should change my rate to 5% hahahahaha.... Anyhow, I am managing with the 4%, and it seems to work o.k for me, for the moment.

In the past 48 hours, it does appear that we have slightly broken out of the $560 to $630 price range.. (currently in the approximately $648 to $654 price range) and so the upwards BTC price pressures seem ongoing and quite evident.

Yeah, there could be another interpretation of what is going on in respect to BTC prices, but I would characterize this current BTC price dynamics as "upwardly pressured"... and probably with greater likelihood to continue upwards (as compared with downwards or flat) .

You buying Satoshi? Are you convinced, yet?

Just made a first small purchase of Bitcoins.

Much cheaper and easier to buy from exchanges in Asia than in the UK. Tried over and over in the UK but, in the most recent incident, my bank declined the transaction. Useless.

Anyway, I realize I'm late to the party but this currency could be practically useful for international playboys.

Assuming people only use it to cash out their coins? That buy spread is outrageous!

I don't think that you are late to the party; however, I do think that any of us have to be careful in respect to getting too gung ho about the price going in one direction or another, and therefore we need to protect ourselves in respect to how much BTC we are holding - whether that is 1% of our total quasi-liquid investment money or 10% or some other amount that is comfortable for our own situation.

And, surely there can be quite a bit of value in being able to transport and access value from any location in the world and not necessarily disclose that access to value to any government official.

Yesterday, I had meant to post a couple of links to articles that I had read earlier in the day, but for some reason the day slipped away.

This first one regarding the Uphold acquisition and its aspiring to get into the merchant processing services seems interesting.

http://www.newsbtc.com/2016/10/24/uphold...quisition/

I had been using Uphold quite a bit in about the last year for trading BTC for free, but they raised their fees to .45%, which caused me to move my BTC trading to other locations to experience fees in the range of free to .25%.

I still foresee that I may use Uphold in the future to do some BTC trading because there still can be considerable arbitrage opportunities in the 1% to 5% range.. and I already have my bank account linked there, which allows me to send fiat there for free (even though it had been taking nearly a week to process such)

The second one pertains to the ongoing "blockchain" discussion, and of course, some folks are coming to realize that the only real valuable blockchain is bitcoin, and not that I consider myself as any kind of bitcoin purist, but there is no other crypto or blockchain or whatever that has the balls enough to truly delve into decentralized... and that is the value and the distinguishing aspect of bitcoin. There is a point in the linked article in which the author lumps Ethereum and Bitcoin as if they were the same thing... and that part of the discussion is pure nonsense because many of us should recognize by now that Ethereum continues to attempt to play off of bitcoin and to act as if it is bitcoin 2.0 and all that pumpy nonsense, but in the end, we have seen Ethereum and "Ethereum, you are no bitcoin." hahahahahahaha

Another point that I would like to make, which seems like a separate posting.

In the past day, the mempool has been quite backed up.

https://blockchain.info/charts/mempool-s...span=1week

I have not seen much explanation from anybody regarding what is going on exactly. The one from last week lasted for about 12 hours.

I'm thinking that there is some kind of spam attack going on, because exponential peaks, like this, just do not make much sense.

As you can see from the linked blockchain.info chart, blockchain.info has only been providing (and tracking) mempool fullness data since early May 2016.

I have a current transaction has been stuck for almost 19 hours, as I type, and zero confirmations.

I think that the longest that I had previously was less than 3 hours, and I had a couple of transactions that were like 90 minutes.... otherwise they had tended to go through in less than an hour.

I am thinking that the big blocker, blocksize limit arguing folks are kind of losing credibity with seg wit about to be released, and they may be attempting to get some attention to the matter by spamming the blockchain..

There is a recent discussion, here.

Gosh, dangerous to attempt to be too precise - Are you rethinking anything in regards to Ether? I suppose $25+ is still possible, but sure it is interesting to see how these matters play out... and with bitcoin, I would say that it is going to be either below $850 or above $1500 by the end of the year (I don't see it getting caught in the $850 to $1500 territory for very long - except transitioning, perhaps or coming back down after a pump).

I kind of have ballpark ideas that I am changing on a regular basis. Blush

I'm curious why BTC is ripping right now but Ether is flat.

Also, would love to see BTC ATMs catch on the lower the spread. So much more convenient than Localbitcoins.

(10-27-2016 08:21 AM)nmmoooreland20 Wrote:  I'm curious why BTC is ripping right now but Ether is flat.

Sure we can give our various opinions regarding why the price is moving with BTC and or ETH (which is less relevant to this thread), and surely our opinions are going to possibly be in contention.

By the way, I am not sure if I would characterize about a 10-12% upwards movement in bitcoin (in the past few weeks - and 3-5% in the past 48 hours) to be "ripping," exactly. but yeah, we definitely have ourselves some decent price movement and seemingly ongoing upwards price pressures in bitcoin.

I will provide my off the top of my head attempt at comparisons between BTC and ETH - which I have attempted several times in this thread because a comparison of BTC/ETH seems more relevant to the thread than a pure discussion of ETH, which seems to be a topic for another thread.

First of all, BTC and ETH are not the same thing, even though ETH has been marketed in a variety of ways as BTC 2.0 and to improve and to be better etcetera. The fact of the matter remains that ETH has largely been centralized and has been a fairly aggressively pumped and overly hyped asset since about late 2015. So, yeah, folks have made quite a bit of money off of it, if they played their cards right.

Second, there may have been some times in the past year or so that ETH and BTC prices have moved together, but it really seems that there has been a bit of a negative correlation between the two.. at least to a certain extent, so sometimes, people are moving in or out of one or the other in order to take advantage of the price movement in the other one.

Third, In the past few months, Ethereum has put itself in a bit of a pickle - whether that pickle started with the creation and allowance of "The DAO" or the subsequent decision to hardfork after The DAO was hacked of nearly 1/3 of its value. So some of the pickle seems to be self induced by centralization and then a contentious hardfork, which may also be part of the causation of the latest set of ongoing DDOS attacks that have been pretty much ongoing in Ethereum for more than 3 weeks. There seem to be so many bugs in Ethereum that it remains unclear about the extent to which they are going to be able to resolve the attack matters and the vulnerability matters. There may be some interesting, innovative and decent stuff going on in Ethereum, but there are also a lot of other bullshit and seemingly scammy stuff going on in Ethereum too, that seems to go above and beyond and maybe even more central to the core of Ethereum as compared with the alleged scammy stuff going on in bitcoin that are more like side projects of bitcoin (rather than central to bitcoin's core).

Fourth, if you look into the the matter, there's a lot of interesting and innovative stuff going on in bitcoin at the foundational level..... with seg wit and some other foundational code development stuff that is on the brink of going live. Further, there is a lot of development, adoption and the word is getting out more and more about bitcoin and not so much in a negative light... which even causes bigger and bigger players to consider taking some kind of stake in bitcoin.

Fifth, surely there is some shit and unstable financial matters going down in the world, and maybe this point kind of relates to point 4 above, but the instability aspects and questions about appreciation of value is also going to cause people to chose where to put their money, and from a purely objective standpoint, whether we are talking about longer history, development, security or networking effects, bitcoin should seem like a much more stable place to put some value, especially in comparison to Ethereum.. though some people might choose to put 95/5 BTC/ETH, I personally would not even invest that much into Ethereum.. maybe, if I was feeling adventurous I might do 99/1 BTC/ETH, but even that is a bit of a stretch from my personal perspective.

(10-27-2016 08:21 AM)nmmoooreland20 Wrote:  Also, would love to see BTC ATMs catch on the lower the spread. So much more convenient than Localbitcoins.

You could be correct that competition could help to bring the rates down a bit more with the BTC ATMs, and surely people are hesitant to actually interact directly with a person on local bitcoins - I do have a few people who choose to interact with me instead of BTC ATMs because it is kind of difficult to find BTC ATMs and also once they establish a relationship that they like (we initially met through local bitcoins), they prefer to stick with the one that they know, even if there may potentially be better rates with other people.

I think that in the end, we have to have a considerable amount of increased adoption before there is going to be a sufficient incentive to increase the numbers of BTC ATMs - in other words, our level of BTC adoption still seems to be quite low in terms of making BTC ATMs profitable and/or competitive - if they were to become more widespread.

To supplement my earlier comment about Ethereum being touted and pumped as bitcoin 2.0, this pumping and misinformation is an ongoing matter, and the below-linked article is an example of such nonsensical attempts at pumping ethereum.... .. and the reality of the matter is that there is no there there.. or at least only little, if any.

Go ahead.. buy into that bullshit (I am not being literal, here)

https://cointelegraph.com/news/ethereum-...oin-second

Surely, it is true that ethereum may have better numbers at the end of 2016 as compared with bitcoin... for example, ethereum could have 15x and bitcoin could have only 1.5x, but such a snapshot pictures of price performance would not be very reflective of fundamentals or even very illustrative of longer term performance implications and potentials.

Personally, I think that there are a variety of in-person and affordable options that are becoming more and more available the longer that bitcoin is around, but surely there may be some RVF guys who would not mind entering into a reasonable and a "good rates" transaction agreement with you.

Rustler only wanted to buy 100 bucks, I believe, which is a paltry sum in the grand scheme of things. I need much less and whoever I will be dealing with will also be a fellow RVF member, so there will already be mutual trust and since it is PayPal, I will be going first. In person transactions are unnecessary and all the other BTC exchange options are so convoluted.

I am not willing to share my ID or my Social Security # just to exchange a few BTC. I want a direct easy 2-minute transaction without the bullshit. Shit like this makes me miss Liberty Reserve or e-gold. Anyway, my offer still stands - If anybody have some extra BTC to sell, please send me a PM.

Sure. That is fair enough, and maybe someone will be wiling to do it.

Each of us has differing boundaries and expectations, and I would not necessarily expect anyone to consider boundaries and expectations in the same way as I do, but I do like to present various kinds of bitcoin matters in this thread that could be useful to the contemplations and considerations of RVF members.

So, for example, on Local bitcoins, there are some folks who do not create minimum or maximum transaction amounts, and they do not even describe many of their expectations regarding their buy or sell terms.

My first adverts on Local bitcoins were more open than they are now, and in that regard, after going through the transaction process many times and even after receiving a lot of communications from folks who want to negotiate terms, I have gotten a whole hell-of-a lot more strict in terms of describing my expectations and asserting that people who contact me have to conform to my terms on at least the first transaction, and thereafter I may be willing to negotiate future terms with them. I continue to have plenty of folks doing transactions with me, and recently, after tweaking my ads a few times, I don't get as many folks attempting to negotiate my terms.

Anyhow, my minimum through local bitcoins is $300, and I only do less than $300 with those folks who I have already met. I understand that you are talking about a bit of a different thing - especially in considering the RVF trust matter, which also could be a factor that could merit a smaller transaction. Also, I know for a while (a while back - more than 2 years ago), that some RVF guys in this thread were saying that they would send micro BTC transactions for free to other RVF guys in order to assist and attempt to incentivize other RVF guys in setting up a bitcoin wallet, which I would not mind doing that kind of thing in order to help guys to set up and to test a bitcoin wallet.

By the way, bitcoin is likely a lot better than either Liberty Reserve or e-gold - at least in the sense that there seems to be no real meaningful and/or direct ways for government folks to shut it down, which ended up being the fate of those bitcoin predecessors.

I got into Bitcoin about a year ago. I found the concept very interesting.

Anyone into any other alt coins? I recently found Burstcoin (BURST). I think it has big time potential. Check it out here - http://www.burst-team.us/

The thing that makes BURST unique is that you can mine it very efficiently. Unlike Bitcoin and others that take a ton of computer power and resources (the little guy can no longer mine Bitcoin) with BURST you simply mine with free hard drive space. You have to plot your hard drive space (which can take some time) and the more space you have the better obviously. But once that's done the cost to mine is essentially the cost of electricity of having your computer on. You literally can mine in the background while using your computer on regular tasks. In fact I'm mining right now...

They are also close to launching a way to mine on your android smart phone. I don't think the word is out on this coin yet and just think it has A LOT of upside.

Let members decide for themselves whether they want to sell to me or not. The feds are not gonna pick you up for selling me 30 bucks worth of bitcoin. Trust me, if I could use PayPal to pay with this particular merchant, I would, but nearly every bitcoin vendor/exchanger wants a snapshot of my identity. To be honest, they are gonna smoke rocks before they get that information. And what's worse -- they fail to get the big picture about overall anonymity.

I can't wait until this garbage gets replaced or at least until the price falls. To reiterate -

Let members decide for themselves whether they want to sell to me or not.

This is not a bad talking point, especially since there are fairly strong sentiments coming from both you, Il Bersagliere, and SunW.

Of course, members can decide for themselves whether they want to engage in a financial transaction with you or with any other RVF member based on terms described in a post and/or any PMs that take place back and forth - and also based on trust considerations.

SunW also makes a decent point in suggesting a way to accomplish a similar thing through other means and without necessarily causing as much of a potential risk situation for either person (yeah sure, Il Bersagliere, you have already asserted that you would be willing to take such risk, and sure there are likely other RVF'ers who would not mind taking risk as well for whatever purpose that they would have to engage in such financial transaction with you).

I doubt that SunW is saying anything about you personally or about your trustworthiness, but in fact, there may be a certain amount of lacking necessity or justification for any RVF guy to embark upon such risk when you may have other reasonable and less burdensome means available, especially, as you now assert that your transaction value would be in the $30 value/price territory.

Personally, I don't really know all of the options available to you, but it is not a bad subject to explore or to discuss. We already saw links in this thread that suggest that Bitcoin ATMS could charge anywhere up to 10% for buying bitcoins, and if you are going through Paypal, I would imagine the fees are similar, so probably the fee is not really any kind of meaningful differentiating factor.

Even if you happen to have bitcoin ATMs in your area, personally, I don't really believe that a Bitcoin ATM is necessarily a great option, as SunW suggests, because from my understanding some of the Bitcoin ATMs are also engaging in a certain level of KYC/AML (know your customer/anti-money laundering) practices. I think that was why I had suggested in-person transactions to be among the best - even though sometimes it could be a bit difficult to find a suitable person in your immediate area through a means such as Localbitcoins... but anyhow, I have some high personal preferences for cash transactions with bitcoin, mainly because I had already been burnt with a Venmo transaction, which was supposed to be irreversible.

I just have some difficulties understanding how there can be so many folks on localbitcoin's who seem to be willing to engage in bitcoin sales transactions using various kinds of fiat payment methods, besides cash (by the way, the same thing that you seem to be seem to be suggesting that a RVF guy should attempt based on trust, Il Bersagliere). Either they have some practices in place that allow them to definitely receive the cash (irreversibly) or they may be willing/able to transact a certain volume level that they allow for a certain level of loss on some percentage of their transactions. I don't know or understand what they are doing, exactly, in order to protect themselves from reversibility of those various non-cash fiat payment avenues.

Sure, guys need to keep in mind whether they are reusing addresses and maybe the various aspects of their bitcoin transactions, whether it is accounting or whether it is the risk of reversibility.

In person local bitcoins should not need this kind of thing, especially if you are dealing with cash and even small amounts of cash; however, a problem could be your not meeting their minimums, so that could make sense that it is much more difficult to find someone who is willing to do such a small amount of BTC.

I understand also that if you are not particularly bullish about bitcoin, then you may not want to buy whatever is the minimum transaction amount, yet there are quite a few anecdotal stories of people who "accidentally" got into bitcoin because they had purchased a bit more bitcoin than they had needed at that particular moment, and then the price of BTC ended up going up a lot, and they did not realize that they were speculating (and became bitcoin bullish, thereafter).. hahahahaha

From my reading of both you and SunW, it seems that you guys are likely on very similar pages when it comes to current anonymity considerations, and this anonymity is a bit of an ongoing and evolving concept in bitcoin, concerning the level to which bitcoin is satisfying to folks. One thing is the value of being liquid and acceptable, which bitcoin seems to be among the best of the cryptos in this regard, and the other part about being sufficiently useful in terms of anonymity. I still think that in person transactions are one of the best ways to preserve anonymity... that is if you cannot get some RVF guy to agree to your paypal terms. For that small amount, maybe it would be reasonable for an RVF guy to agree to a 15% or more mark-up, and then also to make sure that the paypal transaction completely goes through before sending your the bitcoins? The amount is really small, so maybe there could be some RVF guys who would consider the whole proposed transaction as no big deal and therefore willing to go through with it?

Yeah, sounds as if you are not very bullish about bitcoin - especially since you are characterizing it as "garbage" and you seem to be counting on (or even expecting) some kind of meaningful negative price movement, which does not seem as inevitable as you are making out the probabilities of negative price movement.

I am not suggesting that negative Bitcoin price movements will not happen; however, I am suggesting that the probabilities are likely not as great as you are making them out to be. Currently, there seems to be considerable upwards price pressures on bitcoin, and as I have asserted several times earlier, the price pressures seem to be more likely to cause upwards movement of 5% rather than downwards pressures of 10%.. .By the way, the latest upwards price movement from about $610 to $725 and back down to the lower $700s represented almost a 20% recent increase with a current floating price that is about 17% above the lower $600s level. So, maybe at this point there is a greater chance than I had described of bitcoin experiencing a 10% or more correction.. though at this point, I am thinking that the more significant price resistance points are going to be in the upper $700s and the mid-$800s.. even though I would not be surprised to see a price correction that occurs before even reaching anywhere near the upper $700s

If you have anything to say or ask related to bitcoin or your bitcoin investment, that would be great!!!!!

Otherwise, RVF has a thread for discussions of various alt coins...

See it here:

Sorry, didn't realize there was an alt coin discussion on here...will transfer it there.

Maybe to supplement my earlier point, regarding upwards price pressures continuing upon BTC, below is an interesting and succinct newsbtc article.

http://www.newsbtc.com/2016/10/30/five-r...1000-2017/

As i have already mentioned, to me, a $1,000 target or BTC price point seems to sloppily touch any kind of discussion of BTC price dynamics - because likely anywhere between $850 and $1,500 is going to be a no sell zone.. hahahahahaha.. Of course, some folks will be selling their BTC in the "no sell zone", and even I am going to continue to sell BTC in small increments through the "no sell zone" (is that a contradiction?). Second, even though I characterize $850 to $1,500 to largely be a "no sell zone," there are no guarantees in bitcoinlandia, and of course, there are folks who are financially able and may employ sufficiently large dumping tactics in order to make the less probable a reality, meaning to reverse the price direction during an uptrend (and within the "no sell zone"), and that is part of the reason that I will continue to sell small portions of my BTC, if or when we enter the "no sell zone." Therefore, for me, "the no sell zone," if we get there, will likely be a price range area in which I lower the amount of my incremental selling while continuing to employ such incremental selling practice (i.e. sell on the way up, buy on the way down, with the ongoing goals of 1) accumulating bitcoin and 2) lowering cost per bitcoin while 3) expecting BTC prices to remain volatile with a continuing overall upwards price trajectory).
