Freebird Flying- In my experience, if something
feels wrong about a relationship, then something is indeed wrong, you just haven't identified what it is yet.
The western emphasis on brutal honesty, and eastern emphasis on face make a relationship between a western and a Pinay a tough situation to reconcile. Often people try to
force it to work since on paper, everything seems fine. But as time goes on more problems surface, and that initial gut instinct becomes a flashing red light.
The Pinay will think everything is good, but often she's ignoring what she views as tactlessness on your part, and just going along since she's under the pressure of finding someone who can support her extended family.
The Westerner will think everything is good since his new girlfriend is much hotter than what he can get back home, and she outwardly shows signs of sweetness, femininity, and moral support that is hard to come by elsewhere. Only later will he discover the games of dishonesty, trust and emotional issues, and extended family drama over money, jealousy, and empty rumors.
I do notice an undercurrent of anger or inferiority aimed at Pinays in a lot of posts. I understand where it's coming from, but it's probably not accurate to paint a country of 100 million people with such a broad stroke. Though, to be fair, it's probably what the average westerner who spends a limited amount of time in the country and mostly just wants to get laid can expect.
Most guys either go mainly for easy lays, or they shack up with the first girl who meets their standards for looks and basic femininity only to regret it later. We often say class doesn't matter, but in this case I think it does. A lot of these girls might check the boxes on looks and sweetness, but they're often coming from a totally different world of expectations than what you're used to. Most times, when you're dating a Filipina, you're also bringing her family issues into your life. If her family is poor, money will become part of the relationship dynamic, and over time you'll grow resentful of it, or it can bring issues of control and insecurity into the dynamic.
My advice, don't get into a relationship where you're expected to send your girlfriend money every month. If you're at that point, it shows that you two are coming from two completely different worlds, and it will always be a challenge to overcome the cultural differences resulting from a lifetime of different experiences. You'll view each other as the result of a compromise of necessity, and it will only cause more problems than it will solve. The more you invest in the relationship financially, the more you'll try to rationalize things away. Maybe I'm wrong, but the SEA stereotype of the long distance boyfriend who gets taken advantage of by the younger foreign girlfriend exists for a reason.
Unless you're willing to spend more than a month there, I wouldn't even consider thinking about looking for a relationship. The vast majority of women the transient vacationer is looking to meet up with is not even close to relationship material. You're not gonna be looking for the ones you should since you're drowning in a sea of easy pussy. A lot of these girls are playing the same games, and guys get used to these types since they're easy and convenient. Often guys will try to make it work with one of the hottest in their rotation, only to later grow frustrated with relationship bullshit with an unworthy LTR prospect and write off all Pinays forever. The ease of getting laid and the access to hot women that even an average guy is capable of landing will make them impatient when looking for the kind of girl that would make a decent LTR.
The kind of Filipina you
should be looking for:
- At the very least, self sufficient. Comes from a family that is relatively self sufficient and mostly has their shit together. This eliminates 90% of the pointless games of jealousy, drama, rumor, resentment, and entitlement that's common in low class families. This rule can maybe be bent for absolute emergencies, but even there I'd be discerning.
- If she does come from a poor background and there's family issues, she "sandboxes" it so you don't deal with it. If there's issues, she doesn't bring those issues into your relationship.
- She shows enough signs of responsibility. Does she show up on time? Apologize when she messes up? Does she hold up to her agreements? This becomes less of a problem with lower middle class and above.
- She shows enough signs of restraint. Does she get shy when you first try to kiss her? Does she want to introduce you to her family (less of a warning sign in independent middle class+ types)? Does she expect girlfriend status, or at the very least, signs of genuine interest before having sex even when she's visibly aroused?
- Doesn't nag or throw tampo over petty issues. Able to work things out rationally after she's calmed down and never holds on to drama or resentment.
- Able to hold a basic adult conversation in english that involves more than 5 word sentences.
- etc
The point being, not the kind of girl that's on the radar of most guys briefly passing through, or browsing dating sites. Often you'll have to trade down slightly in outright looks.
I'll be in Manila a few weeks from now if any established guys are around and wanted to meet up for hookah or a few beers.
