The fact is, Spain IS NOT PERFECT and it's not all fun and games. There are some seriously messed up things in this country and I think it is wise to point them out. It is no way compatible, culturally speaking, with Alpha-mentality and the sort of society that is ideal for ambitious men.

Above and at last, your analysis of Spain is subtle, and much more interesting than your first posts...So, I can agree on some points you're making above, like about the "HERD mentality" and systematically casual dressing.

Concerning welfare though, I cannot agree: I'm pretty sure that there is a small amount of money that the Spanish state gives to idle people, I think it's around 300 or 350 euros per month... I'm also pretty sure that Spain gives free housing (and free hospital care) to illegal-migrant families.

First, there is no national welfare program for immigrants. You are referring to the refugee issue - that money though comes from the EU and Spaniards LOVE the EU. So they are hardly "conservative". If Spaniards were truly conservative they would not tolerate this.

Most people who are unemployed here live off their "papi and mami". It is that bad. You see grown men, well into their 30s, living at home and leeching off their parents. Immigrants? Not really. In many cases they work much harder than the Spanish and are sometimes even more qualified (as is the case with Eastern Europeans who many times speak more languages and have better academic backgrounds).

There is NO free housing here for immigrants - some autonomous communities have protected housing mostly for Gypsies, not immigrants. In fact, that's why so many Spaniards are obsessed with buying a home...because when they get old, they will have no other asset and there is no such thing as senior citizen housing here except homes (residencias de ancianos) which are actually mostly private.

If someone were interested in welfare, Spain would be the last country on his mind. The Syrian refugees have themselves emphatically stated that they do NOT want to come to Spain because they know how bad it would be for them here in terms of opportunities, mediocre schooling, etc.

C'mon! There is NOTHING "good" or "conservative" about Rajoy. Also, this lower unemployment you are seeing is seasonal, because lots of tourist jobs open in Summer. Come back to me at the end of September and watch how unemployment spikes back up to previous levels. There is no hope for Spain.

Great discussion. Even though I agree with a lot of Baldrich's criticisms of Spanish society, he should think twice before leaving.

First, the issue of whether Spain is a good place for an "Alpha" entrepreneurial attitiude. From Baldrich's own descriptions it sounds pretty good. You're surrounded by lazier people, great. Weak enforcement of rules, plenty of loopholes, great. He's got a business carved out. The Alpha mentality is internal, why not take the opportunity to establish a franchise, build an empire, branch out into other areas like TESOL publishing, or something else? Wolf among sheep. What other people do makes no difference, as long as they provide a market for what you're providing.

Second, I was relieved not to have to deal with guys trying to be hyper macho and AMOG the world. To be able to go to a crowded venue with people getting drunk and nobody getting asshole on you or fights breaking out is a relief.

Spanish men are pretty respectful to each other and to me as a foreigner. There's none of that edge of having to prove yourself as a badass or in social status, maybe because of the general lack of ambition or more formal manners. There is more social equality between classes, and the guy with the lower status job is more up own his own culture and traditions. The lower class in the USA is just beat down and cut off from its cultural roots. Maybe because of this, they are more ill-mannered and dangerous. In Spain you might have to worry about Gitanos a little.

Spain has preserved masculine space. It's obvious in public places like bars and in the many clubs. Guys hang out together.

My observation in my time there was that police were less intrusive and more hands off than in the USA. Try having a free beach concert and sell and buy cans of beer on the street anywhere in the USA. The Guardia Civil have a reputation for being tough, but apart from the Traffic Division, you're not likely to encounter them in a city.

Third, cost of living delivers highest quality of life at lowest cost of any place I've been factoring in weather, food, safety, social life.

I hope we get a follow up report when you move to a moderately or more prosperous city in the USA and have to pay $2000 a month for a 1br but have to worry about break-ins and mugging on the subway.

Fourth, on the issue of Spanish politics, as Baldrich said, don't let your knee jerk to think that the "conservative" Partido Popular has any value. They are known for massive corruption and lies. For example, they sold off hundreds of units of public housing in Madrid to Blackrock hedge fund for cents on the euro - and the PP mayor's son worked for Blackrock.

Re: Market. It's much easier -- and you can be quite successful just by establishing your own business through word of mouth without the need for a franchise. So in that sense, yes, Spain is ok DEPENDING on what you offer. It just so happens that what I offer is almost virtually unheard of (the combination of classes I offer so it's been pretty good thus far). When it comes to publishing though you need more connections and it's not worth the hassle. There are already plenty of TESOL materials and my focus isn't TESOL anyway.

Here I've grown my business but don't really like what I do and it does reach an invisible ceiling where you just sort of get bored. As I said, it's good if you are doing a brief stint here but not a lifestyle choice of career for me. I thrive on more pressured, hectic environments...not in this "no pasa nada" land.

Cost of living + quality of life: hands down unbeatable. I don't think there is any other country in the world where you can just easily walk out of your apartment at whatever time, be safe, and able to have a beer until VERY VERY late. Only New York offers that without the good weather or prices. So I definitely agree that life here is very good for cheap IF that is all you care about. I mean just yesterday I had 20 euros with me and bought: 1 liter of freshly squeezed orange juice, 1 bottle of beer, 2 pizzas (frozen), and salmon (juicy and tender) all for 9 euros. There are bars and cafés on literally every single street and Spain has more bars than the entire United States. So I would never argue that the US is better in these things because it isn't and we don't have a bar culture where people just hang out and chat like they do here.

Men: Actually, that's why I think Spanish men are wimps. Yes, they may not be assholes like you get in the US, but that's also part of the symptom of the malaise of Spain. The reason you won't get any confrontational guys here is because they don't have the balls to defend (or care to) defend anything. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've gotten into a heated debate and when those guys see me owning the debate, they crash their drinks against my pint or cup and say "somos amigos eh!?" as in they are getting really nervous when I get confrontational.

The whole reason why you see men being so nice here is that they are in fact very feminine relative to US or British standards (like the French or Italians). I mean, let's face it..sorry if this bothers people but a lot of Spanish guys would look like queers in many American towns. Have you seen the little glasses they drink from? The "caña" glasses for the beer...and yes, they are not confrontational and can't defend anything if their lives depended on it. Most of them wouldn't even be able to handle a simple handgun.

Also, one of the other reasons for that is that here there is something known as "buen rollo" which I despise. "Buen rollo" roughly translates as "DON'T ROCK THE BOAT!" Spanish people get REALLY nervous if you make a scene, even if you are right. You're right - you will never see a Spanish guy saying something like "what the f are you looking at you queer"? But they are just terrified of rocking the boat.

Another really revealing thing about them, which speaks volumes of the country, is that you will NEVER IN YOUR LIFE see a young Spanish guy alone in a bar. They are too scared of doing anything alone. I go to bars by myself here all the time and everyone knows I can't be Spanish because of that simple fact. And of course, you would be even more hard pressed to find a young Spanish gal alone in any public place. I am always amazed at how Spanish men can't seem to have balls to do anything alone. It's exasperating and then it gets to be just simply annoying. Sorry, but Spain just doesn't cut it for me at this point.

I think you guys are conflating politics with personal qualities. Iglesias started a mass movement that became the second largest party in Spain. That is leadership. You don't get there without Alpha qualities.

Sure they have small beer glasses, they also have larger ones, the tubo, pinta or tanque. Back in the old days in the USA, they served beer in small glasses in workingmens' bars. I remember the 10 cent draft in a 10 oz tumbler. Not really an index of masculinity.

I would say bullfighting more of an index - you are against it, but I see it as a theater of death in which the bull and the bullfighter confront existential reality. Primitive, yeah, but a masculine pursuit (despite a couple of women breaking into it in the past). Yes, the bull suffers but has a great life up to that point, much better than castrated feedlot steers. The matador runs big risks, one just died a few weeks ago.

The Spanish also maintain a proud military tradition.

Iglesias didn't build anything that wasn't already there - he simply became the mouthpiece for a failed movement doomed from the start. I remember years ago when the first tents went up in Madrid because I LIVED it and said from the beginning that it was a failed movement or that it would fail because I know the Spanish people well. They make a noise about everything, fury lasts a couple of days and then nothing happens and everything goes back to the way it was with no progress. Spanish never finish what they start.

Iglesias has also caved on numerous occasions and when confronted, he is as cowardly as they come.

Why elaborate on the good aspects so much when there are hundreds of positive posts already to that effect? It seems to be the trend these days that any critical voice is immediately seen as something out of hell. And I have said PLENTY of positive things about Spain and will do so at some other point when it is relevant.

Then you say I "bash" the people. Is it "to bash" them when I say that they should improve and don't? Is it to "bash" them when I tell people that the quality of life is good here? In Valencia too - there is a place called "La Bolseria" and plenty of nice looking women there from all over and if you're a guy with purchasing power, have a good level of education and are remotely interesting, then of course you can hook up. Spain also has tinder...but again most Spanish women in smaller cities won't be too keen on using it...since naming and shaming is still huge in Spain.

So I much prefer Swedish girls or other similar countries. Why waste my time spending months trying to convince some Spanish witch about how great she is (when she probably isn't) just to MAYBE get a bang? No need for that. They hangout with their same childhood friends. Girls rather to date broke below average guys that belong to their social circles before dating outside it. Hell even the international students have fame for hanging almost exclusively with their kind, you go to an student party outside Spain and you tend to see the groups of spanish people on their own. I have heard that in Madrid is somekind different, no idea, it is true that you can have ONS in Buenos Aires if you put a big effort also.

Even thought all this, I have ben thinking about moving to Spain, life outside Barcelona and Madrid seems to be really cheap for a country with such a good lifestyle my only reason to not do it is the girls, I don't like their princess attitude and you have to spend lot of time playing the social circle game with their friends until they decide it is ok the give you her pussy as prize, they have this annoying smoker masculine voices also. Both this scenarios happened in international parties, then you go and talk to a mexican or an american girl and feel like is like you are on another dimension, not even the rejections where so rude.

I see you recommend Valencia, I have read in a couple of datasheets that it attracts tons of international students, I think Barcelona would be probably the best gaming city in Spain due to the massive influx of foreigners, you can probably approach a lot of tourists during the day, not sure if Valencia has enough numbers, I mean I lived in a small student town for a while and couldn't do direct daygame easily for example since the foreign scene was very small, it ended being a social circle game also.

Barcelona and Valencia are the most tolerant and open cities in Spain (Malaga too, but I still prefer Valencia because it really is a "live and let live" culture). Valencian social groups are closed, but it attracts a fair amount of people from other parts enough to day game and Valencian women are among the most open in Spain too. Not the ideal, but not as terrible as Madrid or the North of the country.

And yes, I find American girls MUCH MORE OPEN-minded and friendly than Spanish women. I think most guys here don't know what they have in the US until they live in Spain and deal with the women. I'm not surprised at all about the Spanish women and your friend. They have been taught that they are princesses (even if they look like a dog's ass), are entitled, loud and extremely ill-mannered. They are very mistrusting too because Spanish men are liars so they also probably thought your friend was praising them for sex (I mean, they think all men are slimy, that's what they're used to).
