Another isolated incident?

A woman and her three daughters have been attacked by a knife-wielding man at a holiday site in the south of France, French media report.

All four were taken to hospital, with one of the daughters in a critical condition, a police source said.

A man, 37, was arrested trying to leave the scene in a vehicle after the attack, which happened around 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT) near Sisteron.

Local prosecutor Raphael Balland said the motive was still "very vague".
Some media reports suggest the family was targeted for being too lightly dressed.
The mother is said to be 46 years old and her daughters aged between eight and 14.

The attacker, Mohamed, B., aged 37 may have acted out of religious reasons. He allegedly reproached them for being dressed too scantily. The girls were wearing Bermuda shorts.

Well, in any case I've never heard of a (non-islamist) French man stabbing women and teenagers because they have short dresses... Oh wait, but of course, the DA denies it, the assailant was just another "mentally unstable" poor guy, nothing to do with islamism...

No mention of a father/husband present -- I know we still don't have all the facts, but my immediate speculation is, single mother with daughters, on holiday with no patriarchal figure to provide protection (I could certainly be proven wrong in this, but that's my gut feeling at the moment).

Such cases happen sure too. But most of such rampage cases involve no deeper political - religion motivation behind. They are offences out of rage and mental illness. Someone that start to attack people because they are seen as enemies from his believe system are done by intention. Not by mental breakdown or illness.
The motivation of an offence make the difference.

I'll respectfully disagree with the above poster. It's probably more of a quibble, but here is an alternate explanation.

I care more about a crime being committed (a crime that involves a victim), and less about motivation. So white guy stabs white girl, brown guy stabs white girl, both equally bad to me.

But what the forum is (righteously, in my opinion) compiling is a series of (mostly) preventable crimes made all the more incredulous by the mainstream media's teeth gnashing of "oh why oh why us??!".

Best analogy I can think of is the difference between posting stories about people having their houses robbed, versus stories of people brazenly leaving their doors unlocked by the millions and then wondering why the robbery rates have gone up.

Needless to say I'm disappointed. There's nothing surprising about a muslim man randomly murdering innocent people.
