It's a good idea to shop in your own country when the sales on, fill your suitcase with low priced trinkets, and then go to Ukraine like Santa Claus. Everything you buy will probably be priced 3 times higher in Ukraine.

Italians are good in this regard, they are often extremely stingy. They will ship a case of 2 Euro a bottle wine from Italy and tell them he made it in his own vineyard and such things

Hmmm, not sure about that. IMO everything is much cheaper in Ukraine. Krisis has its benefits, and most stores make massive (and permanent) sales. Bought recently in Kiev a Thomas Sabo ring for GF and a bracelet for me, discounted at 60% - which was half the price the displayed price on the Thomas Sabo site.

Same for expensive clothes, IMO it is also worth it ...I bought last winter a gorgeous Brioni leather/marmot collar jacket (which, admittedly, was from the previous season) at some 60 % discount in Dnipro. Cost was some 95 000 grv, discounted to 40 000 grv (which was a steal). I remember I saw the very same jacket at the Brioni store in Paris at 4 500 € ....bought also in Dnipro, where there was 70% at the Zegna store, an alpaga sweater (of the new collection) at half the price of the Zegna store in Paris. Got also in Kiev a very good deal on a Brunello Cuccinelli winter coat for GF.

Really, if now I spot in the new collections some nice (and too expensive) jacket, coat or sweater I really want, I wait to be in Ukraine to try to find it.

You will never know a womans true intentions and their loyalty and love can change very quick. I never give a woman anything or let them get too close for atleast 2 months. I invite them into my lifestyle but if they complain or if they are not a fit, there is the door.

For clothing yes, there are some good deals to be had in the sales. I recently picked up a nice air of Hugo Boss Chinos for 1500 UAH which was a steal. But outside of the sales the prices are often a comedy.

For high end clothes like what you are talking about I would have no idea, I can't see me ever spending that kind of money on clothes, especially on girls!. I was more referring to buying something as a "leg opener" for young students rather than a Ukraine's hottest models. For example some inexpensive kitsch watches and jewelry and beauty products.

I think before we were talking about fakes, in Odessa I found many fake stores Benetton 100% fake, even high end stores will mix fakes in with their regular stock.

It's a one bedroom apartment from Airbnb.

Stayed there two months with GF July/August 2014. Very nice apartment, great location facing the Opera, and gorgeous balcony. Really a cool place (asking price was a bit high but was easily negociable for two months).

I'd love to visit for a 2 or 3 weeks for the ladies of course but I'd feel I'd be bored out of my mind in Kiev.

Actually, Kiev is a very old, huge, beautiful and historic city, there are quite a number of historic places (and of course parks) to visit there... You also can take a boat along the river, go to gydropark, see an opera, etc... If you speak Russian, Kiev will not be as exciting as Moscow, but still, it's very far from a dull city!

Thanks for the response. I'm struggling between Ukraine or the Balkans/Bulgaria, needed some tips. Being a Spanish-American guy, I'm thinking my reception will be better in Ukraine but there a lot beautiful shit to do in the Balkans.

I guess come to think of it I could try to spend my time learning Russian, I probably wouldn't get more then a few words in 3 weeks but its always been a language I wanted to learn.

Another life decision, that in the end, probably doesn't matter.

Thanks. As a side note, you can theoretically import up to 50 cigars, but I've never ever had my luggage checked at Borispol and as a heavy cigar smoker, for longer stays, I bring up to 150 sticks (50 in my travel duffel and 100 hidden in my luggage).

I'm in Dnipropetrovsk. Big drop in talent from Kiev or Lviv. City is a shit hole. Not many food options. Tinder is more or less useless.

On the plus side it's got a more laid back feel and a bit cheaper accommodations relative to Kiev.

Yes food options not great in that city, Foursquare can be useful.

Forget Tinder, only useful in Kiev.

The boulevard by the river is the best place to be, also cross the bridge and there is a nice park on an island.

I found quality in Dnipro to be sub par, although I would rate better than Lviv personally.

Remember even sub par in Ukraine is better than most countries

Once more, Dnipro is a rich city, where many rich people live, and there's dozens of good or fine dining options.

Anybody living in Ukraine and making their salary in hryvnia thought about buying gold here?

My Ukrainian friend was telling me about pure gold coins called Pjatka. They go for around $500 US each and are sold at most banks. I have a lot of hryvnia stashed away and gold seems like the best option for maintaining the value on my savings.

Anyone have any info on Pjatka?

Why not instead stash a couple thousand in a major Ukrainian bank. I know they are not that stable but when the interest rate is in the double digits your money will appreciate faster than any gold you buy and as long as you withdraw quickly I don't see much of a risk of the bank defaulting.

This is info on bullion coins issues by the Ukrainian central bank:

But your best bet to protect yourself against further depreciation of the Hryvnia is to convert them into dollars (maybe even rubles). Transaction fees, spreads, liquidity issues, all make holding physical coins problematic as an inflation hedge.
