RE: Liquor banned, bars/clubs shut-down in Philippines
Quote:When asked what would be his first order as president, Duterte replied, “The very fundamentals of society – curfew, no drinking beyond 1 o’clock.”

“I’ll ask if I would need a national law. If I have the authority under the broad police power of the state, maybe I can (implement them). But if it is inadequate legally, I will ask Congress (to pass a law),” Duterte said in a press briefing Saturday night here.

“Why should we drink until 2 a.m.? Is this a drinking contest?” he added.

Duterte said he wants to implement the liquor ban because employees of establishments like waiters, cooks and cashiers also need to rest.

He said he would also prohibit smoking in public places.
Headlines ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

“They say that they are using their money for the cigarettes. Look, if you’re not an idiot, you know that when you smoke in enclosed restaurants or offices, you pass off cancer to others,” the incoming president said.

“It’s not fair for you to distribute cancer. It is scientifically proven beyond doubt that it (smoking) causes cancer,” he added.

At least post the article here.

He's not banning booze, just limiting the time for consuming. Here in the states we can drink till 2am - 1 hour less that big a deal to me.

I'm not sure when last call is in the Philippines.

Personally I'm not a fan of ciggs, but that's me. I don't think it should be banned outright maybe designated smoking sessions.

I know we already have a thread about this guy, most see him as a decent guy.

Will it hurt tourism ? Yeah more than likely it might.

Damn bro, that sucks because in the next couple of years I was going to retire there. Guess I'll stick with Mexico. That was one of the best things about Manila was that you can just go out of your hotel at anytime and party. I guess the pussy will still be easy. Come to think of it, I only used club game twice. All other times the chicks literally came to my door from Tinder. It was quite easy.

Now the devil is in the details, so we'll find out more I'm sure.

I'm sure he'll get push back from congress on this.

LOL what is there to complain about? If you can't drink past 1am, all that's left to do is bang.

"What is this, a drinking contest?". Hilarious. This new president does pose one risk to you guys though: he may actually improve the Philippines beyond third-world shithole status. At which point your status differential will start to erode...

Also good on him if he bans cigarettes in public. That shit is fucking vile.

Good point. I highly doubt that would ever happen. What do they have? They have NOTHING to export, literally. Some gold and rice but thats it. They really have no economy. I don't see them becoming a global first tier or even second tier anytime soon. Look at Mexico, still a shit hole, but the main city is VERY nice.

Like in Thailand, the law is only the law as far as it is enforced. There will be "no drinking after 1am"... so long as the proprietor forgets to pay the local cops to look the other way.

That is true. He did say that he was going to prevent corruption, but see how far that goes unless you're paying the cops a reasonable wage which is impossible with no budget.

This is Philippines we're talking about.

Duarte is just going to make the corruption work for him. He's not going to end it.

I like it 1 AM close time might make me actually go out again. Good for sleep, good for pulling to an after party stocked with liqour.

Your reasoning might be true, but, come to think of it, I seem to remember that in Duterte's city, Davao, laws are indeed enforced (non-smoking and closing of late-night bars), and without corruption.

So, maybe he will have the same kind of impressive results, with the whole country, now he's been elected as president? We'll see, but for the good of the Philippines we certainly have to wish him luck!

Side-note: Out of curiosity, I am trying to establish the French roots of mr. Duterte (a very French family name, indeed, as is Dutertre, too)... probably comes from a family of manufacturers of silk and clothes, originally from the North of France, which did business in Asia?... but it is very hard to find data on that. Maybe Duterte gave an interview in the past, about his family's roots?

Duterte is a fucking gangster and I wish him luck in his quest to clean up the corruption problem in the Philippines, if that means that people can't drink after 1am then so be it but as Kona said, there will be ways around it. This is a really good, short documentary on the man:

I've read about them before, depend on if he's killing scumbags or general low end violators. I've read they've killed the accused, not just the guilty.

If his squads start killing people for being drunk after 2am or smoking, then I'd be worried.

If I was a Filipino drug dealer or meth head, I'd probably go hang out in the provinces for a while. I'm not sure about how they go about killing people over there but in Colombia they hand out flyers informing all of the bad people (drug dealers/users, hookers, street people, etc) to get off of the streets. If you're dumb enough to hang out on the streets at 2 or 3am then you may be waking up dead in a gutter. An unfortunate result of poverty and a lack of family planning thanks in large part to the Catholic church.

Have the Phillipines ever executed a foreigner? Or more specifically in Davao under Duterte? I can't find one instance of it.

I personally don't see any of this as a negative. Maybe scumbag sex tourists will choose another country.

A couple of Canadians have had their heads chopped off by the MILF in recent months but obviously that isn't government sanctioned. I haven't heard what happened to that US Marine who beat up and killed the chick he hooked up with who turned out to have a dick, he was probably deported back to the US.

Nah, he really enforces his laws.

A bunch of the country's politicians were in Davao about a year ago and one of them got a speeding ticket and another was arrested/fined for trying to sell fake passes in the same day.

He's been the mayor since before I was born but still lives in a really simple house and sleeps under a mosquito net.

But KTVs still serve alcohol after 1, just not the bars. I'm not really sure what the loophole in the law is there, but it's pretty easy to bounce a girl(s) there if you want to keep drinking.
