Generally these guys are bums and losers rather than hardened jihadis. If you look into the guys who have been carrying out these attacks across Europe and the US, you'll see that they have typically taken a very relaxed approach to their religion. Many of them have been gang members, smoked a lot of dope, been out clubbing and drinking, etc etc. I would not be surprised if it turned out that this guy, far from being a religious zealot for much of his adult life, had actually lead the kind of life his religion would condemn. I suspect any hardening of his religious convictions is a recent thing.

That's not to say Islam isn't a problem. However, the nature of the problem may not be as straightforward as we are making it. It is shocking how unIslamic the lives of most of these terrorists have been.

And not to say that the Orlando attack is driven by ISIS, but it does appear to be related to an Islamic-immigrant descendant.

You need to read more about the beliefs of Jihadis. They're basically millenarians who believe the apocalypse will come when there is an open war between Christianity and a united Ummah/Caliphate of Muslims. Their goal is to provoke this conflict.

Whether this belief is shared by other Muslims, and whether it is what all Jihadis believe, I don't know. I just know it is what Al Qaeda/ISIS believe.

IIRC there's a loophole in the Quran that allows Jihadists to adopt the sinful ways of their enemies temporarily if it furthers the cause.

This marks the first major attack of the summer on western soil. Does anyone think it will be the last?

It'll be interesting to watch the media twist into knots trying to report on this without pointing to the obvious pattern of attacks since Charlie Hebdo in January of last year.

I agree. However, he needs to be smart in his approach. The killer has been a US citizen for many years, so it wasn't like he came here as a refugee. Becoming radicalized is the issue.

The problem with most of the major organized religions: the commandments are either so overbearing and broad that nobody can help but do the things they forbid pretty much constantly, or so trivial and frustrating that all sorts of loopholes have to be constructed to prevent the psychotic minutiae from endlessly interfering with modern life (see Judaism, Islam's prohibition on usury, etc.)

I don't see the issue. Trump proposed a "temporary" ban on Muslim immigration, until we can figure out how to vet them effectively. If we can't figure out an effective way of vetting because even the "harmless" Muslims can radicalize at any time after getting admitted, that just means the temporary ban becomes a permanent ban. That will be a feature not a bug for most Americans.
