What he exemplified above all is that you have to "believe your own bull shit."He did and quite convincingly, so much that others also started to believe his bull shit. Not everyone responded positively to it, but it attracted what he wanted to attract.

Ali provokes mixed feelings:

On one hand Ali was the greatest boxer ever. More than that, he was the greatest athlete to come out of the US. In the athletics domain, he was the greatest showman. In or out of the athletics domain, he was the greatest shit-talker to ever live.

He went away for three years and seven months (STARTING AT AGE 25!) because he refused to fight in the Vietnam War. Whether people agreed with him or not, Ali stood by his principles and we missed out on his real prime years. He came back and still became the greatest.

What Ali did to Joe Frazier was flagrant dishonor. Frazier lent him money, testified and petitioned for Ali to be able to fight again. In Ali Frazier I:

"Ali declared that if Frazier won he would crawl across the ring and admit that Frazier was the greatest. After Frazier won by a unanimous decision, he called upon Ali to fulfil his promise and crawl across the ring, but he didn't. Ali called it a "white man's decision" and insisted that he won."

This is before fight number two and three. The Gorilla Suit, waiving a toy pistol outside of Frazier's hotel room, insults upon insults that led to death threats to Frazier's children. People say that Ali's a showman, Ali's super-competitive. He won two of three. He's the greatest. True...

But karma came in the form of Parkinson's. The great shit-talker could never find words through the shakes. So, so much he probably wanted to say, too. No exaggeration, a mentally clear, fit, non-Parkinson's Ali could single-handedly stop the Trump Train. Karma's a bitch...

On one hand, Ali's the greatest, most inspirational athlete ever. Super dope style and actions that were so far ahead of their time.

Who cares? America had no business being there. He also made his stand quite clear when he simply that the Vietcong had never called him a nigger, which certainly can't be said for the jackasses who were promoting the war (including Johnson).

I don't really do these threads either. I was talking about how I don't get involved in the celebrity gossip threads (over at the Johnny Depp thread, funnily enough). And now I'm talking about how I don't get involved with the celebrity death threads. But again, I'm going to make an exception for Ali.

He forms my earliest memories. Black and white TV, at least in our house. Had to chuck a coin in the back to keep it going. My father, for once at least, in his miserable fucking life, enthused about something enough, to sit me down, and teach me. "This is Ali, son. The greatest boxer there ever was and ever will be. Watch and learn. Now go get me another beer!".

I was enthralled. Yes, this Ali gentleman did indeed possess a certain something. He was the perfect marriage of showmanship and promotion and ability and hard work. Not that I intellectualized it like that at the time. But I do now.

You may not believe this, but I was there the day he held a procession down Brixton High Street.

Black and white stood aside and watched in awe. No, it couldn't be? Yes it was. It was hard to get a glimpse of Ali, and when I did, it was sad. The lights had gone out, yet somehow, they were still on.

It's not every day you get to experience something like that in Brixton. The cavalcade went on for miles. His entourage, massive. The party didn't stop all day. The pubs abuzz. The streets on fire. The people united, for one day at least. Ali, the greatest, had blessed us with his presence.

It's not everyday one gets to quote Oscar Wilde on a forum such as this, but here goes: Never apologize, never explain!

She should have sent out a new tweet, even more magnificent than the last tweet. That tweet should have read: "I stand by my analysis".

Ali I find to be annoying as hell along with the MSM that tout him as being the greatest ever. He is just a symbol for left who seem to love Ali, his big mouth and big personality, and because he is so 'safe' compared to other really 'damaged' boxers.

In the MSM media they always talk about him being the best ever and always in a very positive light. Compare that to Mike TYson, who really was the greatest ever.






Compared to Ali Tyson had it all stacked against him. Getting abused by the women in his life, the Media attacking him for being an 'animal', the harsh criticism he received after the Holyfield 2 fight. In both fights Holyfield was cheating and headbutting Tyson, the ref did nothing, and then stopped the fight when Tyson retaliated. Watching those fights now really pisses me off. Tyson was fighting hard and whenever he managed to get the upper hand, Holyfield stops him with headbutts.

Ali can never be compared to Tyson, Tyson was on another level, and listening to/watching him now just shows you his human side, he has a sense of humour and sensitivity and depth of character that I just never got from Ali.

This isn't a debate about who's the best fighter. The guy managed to set in motion a movement and garner a huge number of fans in the process. At times he was loved, at others he was hated. He milked it anyway. A true showman.

Muhammad Ali was an icon before there were icons like Madonna and whatnot.

This world had its Bob Marley's and its Martin Luther King Jr's, and they made their mark, but Cassius Clay? He was a figurehead. I've never met a white man or a black man yet, who didn't love him. Maybe I just haven't lived.

How badass and alpha of you guys to dismiss Ali as "just a great boxer, nothing more".

Let's address his jailing for refusing to fight in Vietnam. Much as we can judge Ali as a traitor, a coward and a criminal or his stance on Vietnam, I believe that he was everything but. Rather than stabbing good American G.I.s defending their country in Asia , lending his figure to the cause of debate on the USA's place in Vietnam. For a war that saw vastly mixed attitudes back home that ebbed and flowed with the times, Ali's refusal helped brand America's character on the home front.

We studied a story in secondary school about an Australian youth who defied the popular sentiment of the time by rejecting his conscription papers in the lead to WW1. His beliefs against throwing young men into a war on the other side of world seemed illogical to his contemporaries. He faced ridicule from his classmates; censure from military justice. Making a stand against the wrongness of war was seen to undermine the war effort when it was in vogue to do your bit for King and Country.

Like the nobility of that kid in WW1 for standing up for he thought was right, Ali's act of conscientious objection showed that such moral grounds against war persists and he was as brave as any G.I. shipping out to 'Nam for doing so. Any criticisms of Ali as a commie fifth columnist should look at how keen the establishment were in sending their sons to die for freedom in Asian jungles as they did for hundreds of thousands of young Americans who didn't happen to be born of higher society.

To belittle his figure this way is to ignore Ali's significance as one of the leading humanitarians of the 20th century. He was yet another in a line of athletes to bridge the very real schism of racial discrimination that rended the United States.

In a society where the white man saw the black man as biologically inferior in every way, Ali used the boxing ring as a standard for the dignity of his people. To show the world that his race was worth every bit the mettle of his white brothers.

His stance for racial togetherness echoed that of Jesse Owens. Following Adolf Hitler's that the Aryan race was mankind's natural superior and destined to rule the world, Owens used the Berlin Olympics to squash those beliefs. His success there was a thorn in the side of Hitler's plans to showcase the Aryan Volk's ideal to subjugate the rest of humanity that it saw as lesser.

Ali's feats in using sport as a vehicle for black rights were a movement of his time. It was in tandem with the Black Power Salute that occurred at the Mexico Olympics, and it's a stark statement of the attitudes of the era of the monstering that they copped for their efforts.

I'm reminded of a novel we studied in primary school about a Anglo South African boy who used boxing to rally his black South African countrymen against the racial injustice they suffered at the hands of the Afrikaner South Africans. The boxing ring was one area where they could keep their culture intact against the prejudices of their community. The fact that during those days, the Afrikaner Volk were fiercely pro-Nazi made the struggles of Anglo and black South Africa more poignant. That novel exposed me to the ugly realities of hatred of one man against another solely on the basis of his skin colour. I understood in such innocent years the painful necessity of getting to grips with such an ugly side of mankind.

A particular line in that book that stood out to me went along the lines of how there are only two places where the black and white man are equal: in the boxing ring and in heaven. This was a belief that Ali also faced in his community, and he proceeded to demolish those ugly beliefs. He wanted to show us that black men had more places in society than prancing around on a sporting field or doing time.

I wonder what Ali would think about the routine murders of innocent black men such as Rodney King, Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. Would his efforts have all been in vain?

Yes, there was a time when blacks were viewed as inferior. Yes, they are being used now by the liberals to justify their own ends. Yes, blacks commit more crime than whites. No, most white people are not actively setting out to oppress whatever coloured people. Yes, some cops are trigger happy, but sometimes multiple shots are required to neutralize a threat.

All of the above is true, and none of it is relevant here. Don't derail the thread, and don't reduce your post quality with addons like that.

I apologise for adding that unnecessary quip. I realised that it was probably in poor form and of dubious taste.

Race issues were an indelible part of Ali's life, it's something I had pretty strong sentiments given how stark a place it's preached in our society; in our education system, sports, the military - arenas where I've had experience in.

I thought that Ali deserves to be remembered for more than being merely an overpaid sportsman "doing what black people are good at".
