Something that dawned on me.

From an evolutionary psychology perspective I believe women were typically the "gatherers", while men were typically the "hunters" - therefore the more "things" a woman could collect and bring home the higher her status in the female version of the "pecking order" (while in men the traditional bragging right was about accomplishing a tough task like killing a bear rather than collecting stuff).

Female shopping obsession therefore seems like it's another example of an innate instinct being re-routed in a way which no longer serves any practical purpose.

Ironically we also see more and more men today adopting this "female" version of social status (ex. male rappers bragging about owning wardrobes full of designer clothes);

I suppose this could just be an example of consumerism as a whole (e.x. Since there's not as much to "hunt", all both sexes have left to do is "gather stuff"; and as far as the rap obsession with clothes, fashion, etc, this could be the result of so many young people, especially urban black youth being raised by single moms, e.x. learning from a woman how to act like a man.

Ahhh…girls with dogs, especially pit bulls. Front and center in their dating profiles, kissing them on the mouth. Clearly the not-so-subtle transition away from cat lady-dom now that the term has become so mainstream and subject to derision. At least in my mid-sized city full of hipsters I see them everywhere. Hulking, muscular, undisciplined alpha type dogs dragging 100 pound tattooed hipster girls around giving nasty looks to other dogs (or people) they cross. A four legged powder keg scenario in which the vast majority of the time, the dog thinks it’s the one calling the shots (and it’s correct).

Is there really any better analog to women’s undying love for uncontrollable alpha badboys than the “rescue pit bull” phenomenon? It reminds one of the women who work in the prison system that end up fucking the (many times violent) inmates. “They’re so misunderstood, they just need love, I can save and change them!” At risk of a massive derail onto the issue of pit bulls and potentially dog-aggressive breeds, the parallels are uncanny. It’s the thuggish-badboy boyfriend that can’t leave her.

Generally speaking, here is a dog breed known for its history of selective breeding for dog aggression, that requires serious discipline and training from an owner with the proper confidence and dominance to exert Alpha status over the dog. The dog craves it, or else it becomes unstable. Out walking around in my city I see it constantly…skinny clueless tatted up women being pulled by their menacing looking large dogs that they clearly have no control over. It’s one thing when it’s a little rat dog that shits and pisses inside and barks all the time. It’s another thing when it’s a large dog capable of serious violence. Especially when their shitty owner leaves it in a ratty apartment 23 hours a day, building up nervous energy that aches to come out when it finally gets to go for a walk.

Don’t get me started on girls kissing their dogs on the mouth. I’m not squeamish, I generally love dogs and don’t mind if they lick my hands/legs/even face occasionally if they get a sneaky one in but the mouth-to-mouth shit is revolting. I don’t want your dog’s sloppy seconds because I don’t know if his favorite foods include your used tampons, the neighbor’s cat’s shit, or last week’s leftovers out of the trashcan.

I think for a lot of women dogs are just another status symbol, an afterthought like a handbag or new pair of shoes. Something to include behind you in all your car selfies, to love you no matter how fucked up you are, how completely out of touch with your natural femininity you are to the point where you are infantilizing and personifying a four legged animal because you’ve ridden the carousel too long, absorbed the progressive propaganda and see the “childfree” life as the pinnacle of modern women’s achievement. Most of these women are projecting their own innate desires to mother children, to mother something, on these poor dogs. And like most single mothers, they do a shit job and raise dysfunctional, psychologically damaged and at times violent “children.”
